  1. So his voice is kicking ass on this tour then? I have not even read the reviews.. was a bit TOOL’ed out after the Australia tour and the 4 shows. Though seeing on AMT that they played Flood the other day has spiked my interest!

  2. Yes, Maynard’s voice is at its best, currently. I just saw them on May 24 in Baton Rouge. I’ve seen them 5 times during 3 tours and this was the best show by a considerable margin.

Weird, Matt: I used to drive by Ardent Studios every day on the way to a job in Midtown (Memphis). Cool he picked there to record the Puscifer vocals.

    Thanks for a great post.

In regards to Maynard’s voice, I think that during a live shows, the mix is such that the vocals don’t quite stand out enough to hear the odd imperfection. And I guess the emotion of the event also has some psychological effect on this as well.

However generally when listening to bootlegs, the vocal is often high in the mix, probably as a result of the limitations of the recording device. As such you can hear every single missed note that Maynard makes.

I think there’s no doubt that several Tool songs have moments which stretch Maynard vocally, and as a result during those moments it can sound a bit hit and miss, but when you’re actually at the show, I really don’t think you notice them too much. I know I didn’t.
