Another of those impossible questions, just like ‘Whats your favourite Album?’ and ‘Whats your favourite song?’. Im getting rather sick of it! hahaha. Opiate had a good hard sound Undertow has that really stripped back, raw sound. Sounds fkn great! Ænima sounded perfect Lateralus was epic, yet stripped back again in a way, but still so full of sound 10,000 days just another good sounding album They’re all unique and all sound great in their own way. But i must say i really liked the sound of Lateralus, could be biased thou, cos thats when they were at their biggest,… Read more »

^At their biggest? I would still consider them to big. They haven’t gotten any smaller. Record sales are good, many live shows, many tickets sold etc. Their next album/tour will be interesting to see if they are on the way down in any way…

This a tough question,I’ve been listening to these guys since the begining(91-92). I’ve seen them live for every album except Opiate, Lat was by far the best of all of them. But as far as the best album I would have go with Undertow, just pure raw power. Second fav would be Salival but you wasn’t asking for a second best now were you. By the way I went to 13 shows for 10,000 days tour just because I figure I won’t get to see them again. Have fun at the BDO fest. Peace,Love, and TOOL

refering to aenima and lateralus were mixed by david botrill . He mixed a few knowned bands like mudvayne and godsmack i think.. The last one was by evil joe baresi, who mixed qotsa and a lot more. before that it was a lady mixer.. but the studio recording lacks that expensive and nice good , recording material to make a work of history art . Its great also . So aenima , lateralus and 10 000 days would necessarily sound better . and they do Tool albums and sound is very loud and uses a lot of compression ,… Read more »

There is one album that wasnt mentioned and I think it might have been one of the best sound quality (if anybody has it), SALIVAL. Awesome sound quality from Merkaba and No Quarter. Also, my fav. one is You Lied. The sound on that one is pretty awesome.

Lateralus. Best dynamics and clearest sound quality IMO.

Reckon it would have to be either Lateralus or 10,000 days IMO

Another update re TOOL dates in Wellington, March ’08… Smashing Pumpkins and QOTSA have confirmed to play at The TSB Arena on the same night, around the same time TOOL were penciled in, I’m now beginning to believe that TOOL are done with the 10K tour in our part of the world :(. Disappointing to say the least, seeing them only once @ BDO was just not enough!

All the fanbois say Lateralus is the ultimate tool album..this and that..dynamic and perfect..yeah right! The album that defines tool is Aenima. Dickheads say its muddy and unclear, that’s how it was meant to be- to grab you in the background. The production was astounding, amazing songs, amazing seques……original, DYNAMIC, and tool with balls. Lateralus was the beginning of the end for Tool…the sound they were going with was a step back. If I was to chronologically list the order of Tool albums in terms of progression it would be: Opiate, Undertow, Laterlaus, Aenima, and 10,000 Days. Not to say… Read more »

Without a doubt, Aenima and Lateralus would rank the highest in my mind in terms of their spectral purity. Aenima gets the edge because it feels the most authentic. Not too much compression or distortion, subtle use of pans, excellent stereo imaging, etc. Sometimes I think Lateralus is just too dynamic for the CD format. 44,000 samples per second just isn’t enough to capture all of its sonic mastery. I can’t help but think it was a mistake not having David Botrill produce 10,000 Days. As much as I respect Tool for self-producing the album, it seems to be lacking… Read more »
