Tool February Newsletter 2009

Blair has released the February 2009 Newsletter somewhat secretly this time, as there wasn’t a post in the new about it.  It gives us an update of all the members, which I shall summarise below:

  • Adam is working on several big undisclosed projects (the video presumably)
  • Maynard is Puscifering, as we already know
  • Danny & Justin have had a very productive jam session a couple of weeks ago

Thanks to budsyralli from Toolarmy for spotting it.

  1. Sweet, Danny and Justin are jamming! I hope this is a sign that Tool will break the cycle and not wait 5 years for the next album (2011)

I’m presuming you’re a new fan. Tool and co. (-Maynard) have always “worked” on material years befoire the release date. It takes them eons to release a new album. 10,000 Yawns was worked as early as 2003 if I remember..and when was it released? 3 years later. Don’t get your hopes up…Tool have always needed time to get their creative juices going. I predict the next album to be out by 2012.

Tool will have a new album out by the end of 2010 or not at all.

    And you know this because?

    2011 at the earliest…..

I’m making an educated guess based on prior behaviour of the band.  We’ll see who’s right soon enough.

toolsuckswithalexgrey: You sound like a douche bag.  Between your screen name and pious assumptions rests a window into your soapbox propped fart sandwich.  10,000 Yawns? Are you serious? Every track on that album is a piece of creative juice spewed out of the anus of four musicians who continue to create perfect music.

Go ahead and have your opinions, but I bet you’ve never once “yawn”ed during Rosetta Stoned.

What’s with all the dwelling on what’s next? Have you not listened to what we have?

  7. “creative juice spewed out of the anus of four musicians”- no offence, but that is one fucked up analogy to describe Tool’s album production.

But yeh, I do hope we see a new album by 2010, and I hope to god it’s epic (Like 15 tracks epic) because im 99% sure it will be thier last album. And if it is thier last one, I want to see Maynard going all out on the vocals (not saving his voice like he did in 10,000 Days where his vocals were really drowned out).

    i agree with BELLJH.  i loved 10, 000 days.  it definitely wasn’t 10,000
“yawns.”  yea, it was a bit of a let down compared to laterlus but in it’s own right it was a very good record.  i personally see them releasing their new and last record in 2011 also.  i say last because maynard has made it very obvious that he loves doing puscifer and it seems to me, he’s getting sick of being in tool.  as much as i hate to say that.  he’s joked around in interviews about the band having meetings about having meetings and stuff like that which to me indicates he’s tired of the juggernaut that is tool.

  9. I have been a fan since 2004, so I am quasi-new but I already knew that Tool’s albums take forever, hence me pointing out that I hope they break “the cycle” of 5 years between each album. Also, I loved 10,000 Days, it is my second favorite Tool album behind Lateralus.

  10. As I am a long time member of another Tool forum, and have spent a lot of time debating the pros and cons of each album, I’ll just say this is how I listen to Tool

    Aenima
    Lateralus
    Undertow
    Opiate
    10,000 Days

Simply put, I listen to Aenima way more than I listen to any other Tool album. It still challenges me. Each release since has not quite reached the same level of amazingness, but that’s just me. Unfortunately 10,000 days is to my ears, quite predictable. Even a song as fantastic as Rosetta, to me, has a predictable climax. It is brilliant, and freaked me out the first few times I listened to it, but I’m not drawn back to it very often, because I don’t get much of a suprise out of the song, and for a song that is as epic as RS is, I still want to feel suprised.

Who knows, maybe it’s just getting older? I’m 32 and my ears are more experienced than when I first heard Aenima. Yet when I listen to that album now, for the millionth time, it still freaks me out and suprises me. It holds a mystery that draws me in more than any other album I’ve ever heard.

  11. its definitely just you getting old…

but in all seriousness, I often feel like the only Tool fan who feels every album is superior in one aspect or another to the one before it. Sure Aenima was awesome and all, but its instrumentally lacking in comparison to Lateralus, not to mention the mood and flow of Lateralus. Sure Lateralus is awesome, but it can get boring, especially in comparison to the diversity and song writing displayed on 10,000 Days…not to mention the fact that theyve once again improved their playing ability. See my point?

I don’t mean to judge…a Tool fan is a Tool fan. But sometimes I wonder if many of the fans fall in love with a particular aspect of Tool that the band sees as only a one-time thing. The day 10,000 Days was released everyone was like OMFGZ WTF Y R-ENT DA LEERICS ABOUT LYFE & MY MYND & STUFF?! or EW THE POT…I H8 DAT SONG WHER IS DA MOOSICAL XPLORASHION?!

I think if all of us looked at the intention of the artist(s) when making the music, coupled with whether or not the delivery of that intention was effective, we’d all be much happier music listeners.

  12. No mention that Blair also went on to suggest in his cryptic way that there will be something happening in July.  Crazy,  but it almost sounds like they might be playing some festival in July.  Maybe just one show like they did back in ’99?

I doubt we’re going to see them live much before the new album.  My predictions are:

    • New video/DVD by the end of the year.  Possibly some kind of Salival like package featuring all recent videos and some live stuff
    • Album released March 2010
    • Tour following that

Would love to see something like this come out.

Yet you still don’t postulate what Blair could be getting at for July.  The more I look at it, the more I’m convincing myself they might actually be playing a festival.  Maybe wishful thinking, but still…

  16. Album released March 2010[quote comment="34467"][quote comment=""]

LOLLLLLLLLL! Where did you pull that date/prediction from? Credible sources or just a figment of what you want the release date to be? Don’t go by past trends because after every release they tend to take longer to get the album out there…my prediction 2011-2012 at the earliest. They are very lazy musicians…

I pulled that prediction out of the same place you’ve pulled yours.  So what’s it going to be, don’t got on past trends, or do go on past trends?  Your posts seem to inconsistantly argue both

On one post you look at past trends and decide that the album will be 2012, and then the next you declare “don’t go by past trends”?  Which one is it, or should I ignore you like the troll I suspect you are?

  18. I have been a tool fan  since i was twelve years old,since 1993!
For someone to say they are fan,and make a comment 10,000 yawns,Well thats just you showing that you dont seem to understand music.First off  TOOL! Has been my favorite band for many reasons,One of them is that they grow through their music, they continue to move forward and explore new areas of what they do.Their is not one TOOL song that i do not like, that does not inspire me in some way.The main reason has always been, that it is not about them(getting attention)It is about the music!!!!So therefore if they did not grow through their music,it just would not be the same.So for u to say 10,000 yawns, shows ur not a fan of  TOOL!
As far as when the new record will be out,Who knows,we can guess all we want, but till they say none will know!!I hope sooner than later.I really would like to see them tour once more,I have seen them over the years, and everytime was amazing!!!

  19. im still not sure what to expect from TOOL , this tour news is good . and better if they come to B.C. , canada.
