Danny Collaborates with Brann Dailor
Danny, Other Artists November 10th, 2009
Mattia emailed me to let me know about the Guitar Center Drum Off Finals 2010, which will feature a collaboration between Danny and Mastodon’s Brann Dailor:
Guitar Center announced today that Tommy Lee and the Street Drum Corps’ Frank Zummo will present “Bezerk” – an exclusive project commissioned by Guitar Center, featuring some of today’s top drummers and artists – as part of the upcoming Drum-Off Grand Finals, taking place January 8, 2010 at The Wiltern in Los Angeles. Artists performing in “Bezerk” include Chad Smith (Red Hot Chili Peppers), Matt Sorum (Guns ‘N Roses, Velvet Revolver), José Pasillas (Incubus), DJ Aero, Sully Erna (Godsmack), Jay Weinberg, BANG! and others to be announced. Hosted by Stephen Perkins (Jane’s Addiction), this historic evening will also include a very special tribute to John Bonham by Jason Bonham, along with an exclusive collaborative performance by Danny Carey (Tool) and Brann Dailor (Mastodon).
These all-star drummers will all come together on one stage to celebrate the night’s main event: performances by the top five undiscovered drummers in the nation, who will compete in front of a capacity crowd and a panel of celebrity judges to see who will win a prize package worth more than $40,000 and the title of “Guitar Center Drum-Off Champion” – the nation’s top undiscovered drummer. Guitar Center will also induct drum icons Billy Cobham and John Bonham into Guitar Center’s Drum Legends as part of the evening’s festivities.
Tickets for the show are only $10, and are on sale now at LiveNation.com.

Now this sounds like a party.
OOOOOHHHHH MAN!!!!! Just think of Brann and Danny trading fours! Although the two of them are on completely different styles and genres, I love the subtleties that Brann brings into his style. That and he
NAILS IT DOWN on a 6 piece.
As for Mr. Carey, well, I can and will only hope that he will be more at ease and prepared for this expose in light of his most recent Drum Clinic with the Bozz and Aloke!
I wouldn’t say the two of them are in completely different genres. You listen to early mastodon and there’s a lot of elements of DC. It’s safe to say that they are the ones with the most talent there. And I think it’s ensured to be spectacular.
OMFG I love matodon’s stuff! their latest album “crack the skye” reminds me of TOOL’S 10,000 days for some reason. I cant wait for this!!! TOOL and MASTODON ftw!
$10 to see all those artists WTF?? Deal of the century?
Well, I never said they were completely different genres, for the overall music, but when you break it down into drumming, yes they are.
Brann plays very straight ahead with the music. It is the ghost notes and odd time syncopation that makes his sound truly unique. Although, I do hear alot of the motown/stevie wonder/genesis influence in his beats. Keep in mind, he is making all of his sounds with only 6 drums and four cymbals, five if you include the bell. Even on his slower intros, I hear him doing more than DC.
DC on the other hand, has not really played straight forward since Opiate and Undertow. Bring in his electronic equipment and that element, and you have established the difference. Then we have all of his poly rhythms to boot.
I will attest that there are some DC influences in BD work, especially on Blood Mountain and CTS, but nothing to tie them into the same style and genre of drummer.
Well supported argument, Tesh. I would agree that the drumming is definitely duly differentiated; done deal daddio.
Hey, hellboy!
“C is for…” EP has been released. Sounds beautiful)

yeah, there’s also a post on ToolBand about “D is for Dubby”, which is weird, cuz that’s been out forever.
I simply love the fact that TA is one day behind the 8 ball on this news, the Drum Off that is.
As for another Puscifer EP: eh….no thanks.
Looks like teshla314 is winning with the bookies about when TA is coming back. We are coming up on 2 weeks of silence.
Actually, I thinks that HB is winning this one
the reason they mention “d is for dubby” again (even though its been out forever) is cuz there are two new remixes added by lustmord… “queen d” and “under dub”
You raise a good point but completely contradict yourself.
Whisp, you are quite correct in that statement. I could try and back pedal and explain that it was musical genre vs. playing genre, I won’t. This is what you get for contributing to a forum at 6:30 in the morning sans caffeine.
However, having said that, I do not hear DC influence in Remission or Leviathon. And to throw another tangent out there, I believe that Baroness’ second song from the Blue Album entitled The Sweetest Curse opens exactly like Mastodon’s first song off of the Remission album entitled Crusher Destroyer.
Everyone rock out today.
Hah that’s cool. I’m a guitarist. So when I say it sounds similar on the early albums. (lets include Call of the Mastodon too) I mean I get the same feel from them, in a slower song like trilobyte or trainwreck or something I get a real DC feel, with the fills etc.
On that other tangent I think baroness is now to mastodon what ISIS is to Tool… Just my two cents.
I love ISIS.
Whisp, you got that correct. I have been digging Blue Record since I received it pre-order last month. I grows on you.
Although I never have given Isis a chance, I know that I should. Perhaps in the near future, but there is so much more out there that I have to catch up to.
