Regular Fourtheye reader Magnus was lucky enough to have a chat with Billy Howerdel after a recent A Perfect Circle show in Texas, and was kind enough to ask him a little bit about the future for APC. Billy’s responses were:
- By & Down is the only new APC track for now, and they’re looking at a release in Fall/Winter. Digital download was suggested as the format of the release.
- The recordings for the 2010 show came out well. Billy was quiet as far as a DVD goes, but suggested that some of the live tracks would be available with By & Down.
Setlist criticisms aside, everyone who’s caught a show on this tour so far seems to have enjoyed it. If you get the change to catch one of the last few shows this tour, then I suggest you do!

Dude
Cool. I’d like to check out a studio version. Glad you had a good experience, Magnus.

Thanks Kittaan! It was definitely one of the best show experiences I’ve had. Billy was nice enough to pose for a picture with me and mu buddy but the girl who stepped in to take it had shaky hands and it turned out very blurry.

is this what a clicktrack sounds like?
newb
MAGNUS you lucky bastard!! I can’t believe Doug and I were just sitting in the parking lot waiting for traffic to die down while you were doing all that!!
Hey! Hey! Hey!
*clears throat* o.O I see, Dan.
newb
From what Douglas told me, you guys were just a few yards away, whilst I was kicking it with my homies; Fawking Billy, James and Matty.
Although, I am curious to know why there’s been a delay in the official release of By & Down. Billy, if you’re reading this, you sir have made me a liar. How dare you!!!
Lord Muck
This is really weird, why would they need a clicktrack for a 4/4 song live?
Sounds to me more like an IEM, that’s why the vocals are so panned to the right.
newb
Doesn’t that count as an instrument in that song? Isn’t it in the album version?
I also met Billy, Matt, Jeff, and James. They were all really cool. James was a bit stand-offish though, and he was the only one with a bodyguard.
newb
It sounds to me like a clicktrack fed to someone’s IEM
Related, can’t believe I never really discovered this until now:

There is no click track on the album. There is especially no click track that counts in 4/4 using voice before the song starts.
On the album Josh hits the rim of his snare to make that sound.
Agreed, it sounds like it could be Josh’s IEM.
newb
I’m surprised someone like JF would need a clicktrack
Lord Muck
That’s true, I was just thinking it could be because the drums are the loudest in the mix and panning kind of makes sense.
Wait a second this is 2011, so they had the fill in drummer, not Josh Freese.
In my opinion it’s either the drummer’s or Matt’s IEM.
newb
Yeah depends on what part of 2011, the actual emotive tour or the mini club tour. Cool recording none-the-less.
Lord Muck
The mini-tour was 2010 in the fall (I saw it), so I know for sure it’s not that.
Also, the description says it was in July in San Diego.
newb
ah ic
interesting news anyway
Freese Interview:
Makes sense for a session drummer…
and a very, very cool analysis on click tracks:

For a session drummer a click track makes sense, as you may or may not be playing with the other members of the band, and everything really does need to be in time.
For a band frequently playing together like Tool, it’s not as neccessary.
newb
Well technically, Josh is an APC member. Though I guess he does his fair share of whoring around Hollywood.

^to be fair
i have a very guilty conscience.
newb
That’s a guitarist’s IEM, James I think (although I’m not as familiar with APC’s parts so it’s hard for me to identify but there’s not a lot of lead going on which is mostly what Billy plays).
bass humper extraordinaire
I read an interview a while back where Danny said he doesn’t play or record to a click track. Due mostly to all of the odd time signatures and changes throughout each song but I think it’s mainly just cause he’s a bad ass!
I think it’s hilarious you always call me Douglas. You and my mother are the only ones who use my full name.
newb
Have Danny and Josh Freese ever had the Lateralus drum battle? Cause that would be sweet.
newb
I would pay good money to see that.
newb
A click track would seriously throw me off. Maybe if it was just the click track, but I couldn’t hear my way around a click track and a band, especially if we were playing changing/odd time signatures.
