Waiting for new Tool music is as tedious for Maynard as it is Tool fans

As is the norm, Tool news arrived while I wasn’t able to post it (this time in transit between Indonesia and Australia), so I apologise for the slight delay getting this article online. Anyway, Maynard spoke with Rolling Stone recently (not sure how recently) where he talks about writing with his fellow Tool members as a tedious process:

“I don’t write the music. They write the music,” he says of his bandmates. “I wait for them to bring music to me. They tend to go back over and over stuff. It’s a long process. For a person like me, it can be a very tedious process.”

There’s a not a great deal of real information on actual progress on the album, but it is interested, and somewhat comforting to hear Maynard discussing the process that is behind creating a Tool album. Certainly it appears there is frustration there, but then again I don’t think any of the Tool albums have really been a walk in the park for the members of the band.

You can read the full interview on the Rolling Stone website.

I think the main point here is that he’s actually talking about Tool.

The ball is rolling, I’d guess.

And I thought it was an overall positive interview. May Jay does NOT sound like someone who is giving up on this band anytime soon.

Yeah, THIS band. But it’s pretty fucking clear that he doesn’t give a shit about A Perfect Circle anymore.

GOOD LORD! When is he going to quit messing around with Tool and focus on his real creative genius, Puscifer!! So sick of hearing all this news about Tool. Aenima and Lateralus were so gay compared to V is for Vagina and his D is for Dub remix is 10000 times better than 10000 Days

still gotta read the entire interview but its pretty common knowledge he waits for them to write the music, hes talked about this before and so have other members in the band. i recall maynard saying too once he gets it if he needs something changed a little to fit the words better he works with them to do that type of tweaking to make it fit better. sounds like the same old process really but its still good to hear that thats whats gong on. pretty much what most expect i think. cool

“But as an artist you don’t want to become a greatest hits version of yourself, either” haha, really ? were is his head? back in 2001 ? come on! thats just funny! especially from 2006 to 2009! in terms of touring i mean of course. and ya, i saw them many times during those years! still a fan even thru the boring overplayed setlists!

i hope he means that on the next tour!

Stinkfist and Aenema have been played every show since 1997.
I’ve seen them many times live and could do without those songs in the setlist.
Songs like Vicarious, Schism, Lateralus, are 2nd tier songs I could do without too.
Songs I’d prefer which I believe Maynard is still capable of singing are: Intolerance, Eulogy, Bottom, H, Swamp song, The patient, Flood, The pot, Parabola, Crawl away.
And yet, we never get any of them.

Tool played Intolerance in 2010 on the majority of their tour as well as The Patient. Flood and The Pot were played all through 2007. I believe even Swamp Song was thrown in that tour. With Parabola, they played that in 2012 on a few of their stops, so to say they never play any of your list is pretty inaccurate. However, I do agree that I am hoping for a good mix on their next tour. With the lights, videos, and everything, I’m sure it is hard to just throw songs into a set list. Also, you’re never going… Read more »
