A cryptic message appeared on Toolband today courtesy of Blair:
The closer is brought in to get the job done… using everything in his arsenal.
There’s a couple of theories on what this could mean. Perhaps Maynard is finally getting into the newly refurbished Loft to lay down the vocals for the new Tool album? The chill on the forum also pointed out that “the closer” is a bit of a baselball term, so it could refer to the “curveball” being almost ready to appear.
Either way hopefully we get some solid information soon!
I had considered the possibility of it being reference to the curve-ball, but with the way that it was worded, that would suggest that the curve-ball has something to do specifically with Maynard.

Would say an engineer or mix-master for mastering, someone who (to the best of their abilities) can put up with the goddamned professional perfectionism that is Tool.
The ‘curve ball’ reference would be pretty darn sweet though.
I’d say it’s in line with the curve ball. I hope it’s about the new album but I doubt it. I just hope it’s something worth while, it’s been some time since something exciting has come around. My hope would be something live, and not the same old songs, one of those ticks and leaches from the last tour would sure wet my wistle.
curveball isn’t correct. the closer is brought in at the end to either secure or confirm a win. and can usually save the game. hopefully this means MJK.

I actually think it’s Joe Barresi that Blair is mentioning here. But that’s probably wishful thinking on my behalf.
May 2016 is when this new album will probably arrive, exactly 10 years after 10,000 Days.

Does Blair have a favorite MLB team? He could’ve easily been watching them (drunk) and once their closer came in decided to troll toolband.

to me the only thing about this being maynard is that the march newsletter said that maynard was already working on vocals from the loft. my guess is barresi but i feel like its probably to mix/master/put final touches on the “curveball” that the band was working on from the studio when they ran into motorhead. although it was would be nice if some of his arsenal was pedals/amps/etc for the guys to try out for the new album as well.
and as long as i’m guessing i’m starting to think the “curveball” may be a reissue of undertow. if so i just hope it has a shitload of bonus live tracks.
my guess is that something tool related is going to happen in the next year (or so)
