Maynard discusses Biography with Rolling Stone

There’s a new interview with Maynard James Keenan today, this time with Rolling Stone who speak to him regarding the biography coming out next year. It’s an interesting read, here’s a snippet:

Can you give me the backstory on this book? How did it come about?
One of my best friends in high school, we’re still close, his sister’s a writer, she’s 10 years older than we are; she’s kind of been around for a while, of course, seeing everything that went on pre–high school, high school, etc. So I approached her, because she’s a writer, to see if she was interested in helping me work on a semi-autobiography. Because I didn’t really want to write it as an autobiography, first-person — I’d rather have it be more in story form, like you’re kind of along for the journey, with sidebars by me throughout, in my voice, kind of expanding on particular instances or anecdotes. But for the most part, it’s just she and I on the phone a couple times a week, just going over timelines, going over stories, etc.

He also chats briefly about Tool, giving out the usual canned answer regarding the apparent lack of progress:

So there was a conversation you had a couple weeks back with one of our writers, and he asked about the progress of the new Tool album, and you mentioned that there was no music to work with. And last year, another Rolling Stone writer talked to Danny and Adam, and they said that there was some new material. Can you help us get to the bottom of where you’re at with the new record?
Do I seem like a lazy person to you?

Of course not.
OK — that’s all I can really say.

So …
They’re working hard in their own way; I’m working hard in my own way, and I’ve got nothin’ for ya.

So there we go!

Beginning to seem like that “smoke on the horizon” post a while back was a bunch of smoke up the ass.

Would be hilarious if there’s no mention of Tool in the book whatsoever…”I began working with Billy Howerdel in 1998…”

Haha!!! That wouldn’t surprise me one bit!

“…Billy kept asking me about my side project Tool and I couldn’t understand why…”

I’m beginning to the the “curve ball” may be the band announcing they’ve decided to disband due to “artist differences”.

And no, I’m not going to buy any book by someone who has always viewed his audience with such contempt and disdain.

Remember when Maynard was acting all excited about working on new Tool in 2015?
Something has gone seriously wrong in the world of Tool.

I imagine it has to do with the new Puscifer album. Maynard always acts like this when he’s pushing some other project.

Whose fatherhood? Maynard? Who’s been a father since 95? or the other 3? I’d wager you were referring to the latter, but thought I’d ask. @Und; My hunch is there actually IS more that Maynard could be telling us that he’s been doing with Tool… but he knows better (especially by this point) than to tell fans anything at all that he’s done. Once people hear him openly say he’s done anything for the album, they’ll leap to the conclusion that the album is wrapping up. Instead, since he’s in the process of promoting his own projects that ARE completed… Read more »

Exactly how I feel Bob. I’m patient, don’t feel like they owe me anything but would love to hear some new stuff. I’d rather them say nothing at all than hint hint clue clue nudge nudge wink wink….. followed by fk all. It’s getting very old.
