Maynard James Keenan bio A Perfect Union of Contrary Things in November

xZ1mM3r pointed out to me on the forum this morning that the new Maynard James Keenan biography A Perfect Union of Contrary Things by Sarah Jensen is up for pre-order on Amazon, due November 8th. You can pre-order a copy here!

From the blurb:

Here is the authorized biography of the one and only Maynard James Keenan. The book traces Keenan’s journey from his Midwest childhood to his years in the Army to his time in art school, from his stint at a Boston pet shop to his place in the international spotlight and his influence on contemporary music and regional winemaking. A comprehensive portrayal of a versatile and dedicated artist, A Perfect Union of Contrary Things pays homage to the people and places that shaped the man and his art. Until now, Maynard’s fans have had access to only an abridged version of his story. A Perfect Union of Contrary Things presents the outtakes, the scenes of disappointment and triumph, and the events that led him to take one step after the next, to change direction, to explore sometimes surprising opportunities. Included are sidebars in his own words, often humorous anecdotes that illuminate the narrative, as well as commentary by his family members, friends, instructors, and industry colleagues. The book also features a foreword by Alex Grey, an American visionary artist and longtime friend of Keenan, who has designed Tool’s album and stage art. Accompanying the text are photos of Keenan from childhood to the present, as well as reproductions of his early drawings and writings. Maynard’s story is a metaphor for the reader’s own evolution and an encouragement to follow one’s dreams, hold fast to individual integrity, and work ceaselessly to fulfill our creative potential.

I’ll definitely be picking this up. That said, the line “Maynard’s story is a metaphor for the reader’s own evolution” from the blurb made me cringe a bit.

I felt a little cringe too, but as much as you could call the guy pretentious… I think for someone who is seemingly quite private, releasing a bio is kinda brave? Will definitely read. Wonder if it’ll give us a date for the new Tool? XD

i def want to read it but that line about the mataphor/evolution thing must of slipped by me. it is kinda up its own butt and almost sounds insulting but im not sure. typical maynard b.s sometimes. whatever, i still want to read it. i wouldnt say its brave of him to write a bio. more like the titles. he is quite the contradiction. ”i like my privacy and dont like fans,i like to sing on a stage but i stand in the back cause i dont really like it” def a bit of a wack job! 🙂

maybe! i didnt think of it that way. oh well. its a small thing anyway so i dont mind. it will be an interesting read. i hope he dedicates a chapter to Tool though, since he said something like their was more to him then just tool i kinda wonder whats up with that..im sure he will even if its a little bit. he really should. its not a bad thing hes known for tool. hes somewhat bothered by that it seems and he shouldnt be.

Are you Maynard/Tool’s designated spokesman, Hellboi?

I thought that was fair speculation. Maynard’s only developed a palpable sense of frustration talking about tool in these years that the band has been stagnant, and meanwhile he’s been trying to make more of a name for his wine and puscifer. Say what you want about the latter, but it makes sense overall. He’s done an awful lot before, and outside of Tool.

Yeah I agree. I also understand how fanatical and obsessive Tool fans are. So that must get under his nose also. I would just like him to publicly display bit more respect shown to the memory and legacy of Tool. After all. Tool is what has allowed him to become what he is now. (A jaded wine making rockstar?) As for the book. I hope it is interesting. However I have always enjoyed having a limited knowledge of each of the members. In a day and age of instant knowledge of everything, it’s been nice to have somewhat of a… Read more »

Absolutely cringe-worthy. Agreed. I won’t be buying this. I might request my library to bring it in at some point though… or borrow a copy from some overweight neck-beard hipster shit stain. I anticipate it will be a mediocre read chock full of Maynard’s egotistical ramblings about how evolved of an individual he has become now that his fingers have been knuckle-deep in the ground and the money is rolling in. Sorry. I just feel that Maynard has become a Grade A snob-douche ever since taking on this wine business and hurling thinly-veiled insults at Tool fans. Don’t get yer… Read more »

I like the part where you knock maynard for insulting tool fans after insulting tool fans.
