King Buzzo had a chat with Team Rock lately about his favorite Melvins albums, and while talking about Stoner Witch, had the following to say about the new Tool album:
The Stoner Witch record was the middle record of the three that we did with Atlantic. It wasn’t the best selling record from that time; Houdini was the best selling one but that was actually my least favourite of the three. I’m proud of all of those records though, and when you listen to them you can tell there’s not a lot of record company meddling going on. Stoner Witch in particular was a lot of fun to make, and we really learnt a lot in the studio on that one. I think it was the longest time we ever spent in the studio actually; 19 days, which for us is a long time. Bands like Tool obviously spend about six months on their albums, and they’ve spent about ten years putting together the new one. And they haven’t even started recording yet, but Adam [Jones, Tool guitarist] told me the shortest song they’ve been working on is twelve minutes long. Anyway, Stoner Witch was great.
It’s not much I know, but there’s not a whole load else to publish at the moment!

Here I am. For 10 years. Scouring the internet in search of crumbs. Any little tid bit of news pertaining to the new album. Each small morsel which leaves me even more hungry than the last. Like an addict foraging for some relief.
Everyday I tell myself that the final product will be worth this painful lull.
Its laughable.
You poor thing.
OK? This confuses me even more. If (supposedly) the shortest song is 12 minutes long, then all that means is that there will be less songs on the album. Unless they’re planning on releasing a 2 CD album?
If they’re all really that long, that’s impressive (of course, depending on the creativeness of the songs).
No chance of a double album. They are under contract for one more. It wouldn’t make sense to just give their old record company an extra disc for free. If they had 2 discs worth of content (which I seriously doubt) they would just release it as 2 separate albums over time… one with the old company and presumably one under their own label that they would form.
I don’t think Tool care as much about record label concerns as some of you guys do. Tool will release what they consider to be a complete package, and I very much doubt they would hold back anything just to spite the record label.
Double album, magnum opus, accompanying movie, all that jazz, we’re in for something big, no doubt about it.
what a weird comment to insert in the conversation by king buzzo. out of place
Kinda agree. Presumably these sorts of comments have to be approved by Tool’s management…right? There is a non-disclosure agreement about the album in place plus the lack of info generally. Remember that comment by Cevin Key a while back…surely he had to ask whether he could make that comment even if it was asking one of the band members. If you think of all the tid bits of info over the last 6 months they have all suggested minute new detaisl about this next LP. Feels like a ploy to me…
Long songs aren’t always better. I like having a parabola, forty six & 2, and a Stinkfist on a Tool album.
I think Buzz is joking…
I agree, there is a good chance he’s taking the piss.
Agree – weird / out of place / probably a piss take / comment. Still some news is better than nothing – keep em coming HB.
I don’t know why – but I imagine a lot of these new tool songs (along with older originals) start off like an un-cut movie which slowly but surely get arranged in a way which shortens them down a bit. Wasn’t DRT one song originally? Viginti tres anyone?
Anyway I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again – please release a studio version of Prison Sex OTRM.
I personally have always held DRT as one big song…
One song is maybe not right, I see them as three complimentary pieces. From a live point of view I think Disposition and Reflection are pretty much treated as one song from memory, with Triad somewhat separate.
Yes I agree – their final state is three complimentary pieces (or 2/1), but were they not originally going to be one song? I’m sure I read that somewhere…? Hopefully that reiterates my original point; where the ‘new’ songs are now in relation to length, and what they might end up being is familiar process for tool.
ya, sounds weird. plus i remember Adam or someone said by the time they get to the studio to record its pretty quick cause everything is done already. so that doesnt make sense.
nevermind Blairs newletters. some of you guys could easily replac ehim. ”cevin key must of had permission to say what he said” etc etc..man!!! lol
I think Buzzo really just means slow in comparison to them. Tool are normally pretty organised from what I can gather, but you’d expect them to be recording for at least 2 months.
TOOL are very organized when it finally comes time to hit the studio and they pride themselves on that fact. But Maynard has stated in past interviews it’s six months to release date from the time they begin recording, so yeah, I agree HB that 2-3 months of that is studio time and the rest is mixing and the Bob Ludwig mastering. We know they’re nowhere close with M’s limited (or no) involvement thus far but they’ll all be spending a lot of time together this year so hopefully complete band progress can be made and they can complete this… Read more »
Lengthy songs could just mean all the segues and instrumentals are not separate tracks. That’s my take on it. Double album…not a chance in hell, even for Tool that’s a HUGE stretch!
Why is a double album a HUGE stretch? Ten years and counting…
All I’m trying to say is… We’ve been hearing form Blair that they’ve been “writing and arranging” for how many years now? They’ve got to be planning and working on something out of the ordinary, a definition of sorts, something to either carve in stone or be left to waft in the willows. Don’t for a second think that these fuckers wouldn’t put out a double album because they don’t have the material.
Why is it a stretch? Because that would be to awesome! They wouldn’t dare give us such a great…that’s why!
Hmmm… 12 minute songs? And it’s been 10 years in the making. Well, like all goods that come to those who wait, I can’t help thinking about this: http://shadevalley.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/Crazy-Horse-Memorial-2.jpg It may take a little longer than expected but the end result might make a much stronger impression overall. Just saying. And who cares these days about single and/or double albums; by the time TOOL’s new music is done, they can just release it as one stream of 10 to 14 songs & segues on iTunes. Imagine something like 12 pieces of music back-to-back that just happen to add up to… Read more »
New tool- 2019
Pathetic. Cause the 3 song writers, not lyricists, have been sooo busy. Bet it’s an album of Rosetta stones if they’re 12 mins a piece. Great.
I love RStone and also think it’s some of Danny’s best work. Not to mention that it’s pretty damn amazing live.
If Jambi, Third Eye, RStone, wings1+2, Lateralus, Pushit (Live) etc. type songs were on the new album I don’t think many would complain – although the ones who did/do would do it EXTREMELY loudly. *cough*
To each their one – which some folks tend to forget around here.
@ out…
