Tool July 2016 Newsletter

Sorry for the delay, but life’s been pretty busy the last few days! Anyway, the Tool July 2016 Newsletter is now out, and this time around Blair recounts a recent conversation he had with Danny Carey, giving us a few snippets of info on the progress of the new album:

While enjoying his “House Specialty” lasagna to the sounds of an excellent pianist (and master harpist, Mariano Gonzalez!), he added that they were very close to knocking out another tune, and that as soon as it was finished, they would send a recording of it to Maynard. When I asked if this was the song with the REALLY unique time signatures, he told me that they had already finished the music on that one. Okay, admittedly, not exactly stop the press news, but what can I say, other than that they are still grinding away on new material four days a week, and would be back at it later in the week (once Danny returned from the Las Vegas glitz, Justin from celebrating his wedding anniversary and Shelee’s birthday in palm-swaying Hawaii, and Adam hunting for glossy treasures at Comic-Com 2016 in San Diego).

And also:

The other question that I asked Danny concerned the fate of the broken vintage Pepsi machine from the loft – whether or not it had been repaired? Now, here was something that brought a quick response: Yes, he was determined to have it fixed, with or without the ‘original’ parts. Finally, what about the so-called “curveball”, to which he replied that he still wasn’t sure when it would be made available for public consumption, but that “It turned out dang good, though!”

Nothing too revealing, but good to at least hear of some kind of progress, and some suggestion that Maynard is now (or will soon be involved).

“he added that they were very close to knocking out another tune, and that as soon as it was finished, they would send a recording of it to Maynard.”

It sounds like they have already have sent him things, but I never feel certain of anything Tool news related.

I am sure that MJK will soon deny that he received anything from the band.

(I hope I’m wrong)

No mention of Rance or Zemkla(spelling?) . I do wonder what these two gents will have to do with any future projects?

I imagine they’ve been sending him things all along as musical pieces are slowly completed. It wouldn’t be very efficient to wait until all the songs were written before handing them over for him to start writing his parts. Of course, it’s still taken 10 years already, so efficiency went out the window a long time ago.

It sounds like there’s a long way to go before the album gets recorded. I believe that in 2008 they said something about having half an album’s worth of material so this news is pretty meaningless if you want to guess at when things will be complete. It’s good to know that Maynard is involved, anyway. I suppose this is why he’s busy with his book and Puscifer… he’s got to do something while waiting around for material. What I just don’t understand is the curveball. It turned out great implies it’s done. It not being ready for the public… Read more »

I think Blair’s job is to keep the fans interested or talking, even if it means making stuff up (Problem 8) or leading them on. What else can you do for a band that hasn’t done anything in 10 years?

I love how Blair talks about shit happening AFTER the new album. Ha! That will NEVER see the light of day. We’ve heard about the new album being partially done since 2008. And he’s bringing up things for AFTER that. Ha! What a joke. This newsletter tells me: NEW TOOL 2019.

There is no new album. Maybe in 2018…

The emphasis on STOP THE PRESS news makes me think they may break up after the album. The way that last section is worded it’s as though they’ve pondered calling it a day afterwards.

I looked back at posts on toolshed.down.net from back in 2012 (back when we thought the album was a year or two away – boy, were we wrong). Anyway, its so funny because some people were pessimistically predicting the worse, like “New Tool 2016!” and stuff like that.

Little did we know that even the most pessimistic fans were still a few years off. Almost makes me feel as if 2017 is a bit too hopeful. Some dude above me just posted “New Tool 2019″… will I be looking back laughing at that post in 2020?

This band does feel more and more like an addiction. I try not to check the website, but I can’t not, and then I feel bad because there’s nothing there. When there is some shred, I come here. But I’m still strung out. Fortunately the records still amaze and satisfy. I almost, almost wish they would break up so that I wouldn’t be tantalized by the prospect of new music. Ironic that a band known for mystery and inaccessability reveals too much by having almost nothing to say and saying it anyway.
