Adam suggests new Tool album recording in March

Not to be outdone by Maynard, Adam posted on Instagram today following a visit to the Loft by Sebastian Bach (formerly of Skid Row) and King Buzzo.  In his post he suggests that Tool could kick off recording in March.  It’ll be a tight schedule though, with both Tool and A Perfect Circle having tour dates in April/May this year.

Update: Adam has updating the Instagram post to suggest March instead of April as kicking off recording.

~ Huge fun & honor performing all the new tunes for Guinea pigs Sebastian & #KingBuzz b4 the recording starts in April. Still instrumentals with Mjk in town working on killer lyrics. Exciting! ————————–Repost from @sebastianbach @TopRankRepost #TopRankRepost How lucky am I? Spent yesterday getting my face melted by 3/4 of TOOL at the TOOL headquarters / rehearsal Studio. My very own private Tool show just missing the vocals! This is not just your average simple rock and roll music. This is progressive metal at its most atmospheric and right when you get into a groovy trance you get beat over the head with riffs so heavy it feels like a TOOL. Some tunes were so pummelling it felt like I was getting a deep tissue massage! in fact they could call the record that. No song was shorter than 7 minutes and some were 20 minutes long! Just my idea of how to spend the perfect day! Thank you so much to my great friend Adam Jones and Justin Chancellor on bass for your hospitality! Danny Carey you are one of the most talented drummers I have ever seen in my life and such a nice fun dude! You are all inspirations to me & thank you so much for the great preview! I can only Imagine what the Majestic vocals of Maynard James Keenan would sound like on top of this music. If it’s as delicious as his wine is, then I am buying this record for sure! 🎛🔈🍷cheers guys ! It was also great to see Buzz Osbourne the guitar player for The Melvins, who I last saw backstage in Seattle (I think) when we were drinking beers with Chris Cornell decades ago. Always good to see someone still doing great so many years down the line! #Melvins #Tool #MathRock #Rehearsal #rock #survivors

A post shared by Adam Jones (@adamjones_tv) on

So maybe I spoke a little too soon when I ruled out 2018 for a new Tool album.  I’m still on the skeptical I’ll believe it when I see it side of the fence, but good to see some solid progress reports from the guys.

If Maynard is “in town” working on music, then maybe they really are planning on hitting studio sooner than later. Great news either way.

Is he working on lyrics? Or is he 100% done with words and melodies? But holy f*** it’s going to happen finally.

He said he was 100% done on all but 1, actually… And maybe that level of completion is since being in town workin on ‘killer lyrics’

Wonder if Maynard gets pissed when he sees Adam post this stuff right after him.

I saw all the buzz so I figured I’d see if Maynard shot it all down, but…. nope…. He’s actually pretty far along with his melodies and lyrics. This is what Maynard said: “Started getting music files from the boys w the word FINAL in the title a few months ago after 11 years of begging. That in theory means the tracks wont change out from under me while I’m trying to write stories and melodies to them. In theory. Still waiting for the FINAL on 1, but way ahead. Words & Melodies 100% DONE on all but 1. Someday… Read more »

Remember that fourtheye contest where people guessed the release date of the new album? Feels like that was 10 years ago. Any one have a link to that? Pretty sure no one guessed passed 2016.

Well, Kabir sure gave up on it ever happening a few years ago basically with no time to monitor his site and doubtful of ever seeing new TOOL music. Nobody has posted on toolshed since 2017 but it may get active again because these are serious rumblings of shit happening, fast. Maynard’s (nearly) done with the lyrics? Already? While he’s trolling fans that it’ll be awhile? Sounds par for the course. Possible fall release sounds great to me. TOOL (mini) world tours 2018-19 promoting hopefully the best record they’ve ever made.

That does it, they’ve committed to naming a song and/or the album “Patrick Swayze Express”. Choo choo motherfuckers!!!

Double album for sure. Can’t have “some of the songs were over twenty-minutes” and “none under seven” on a single disc that will only hold seventy-minutes or so. Yahfuckinhoo!

Double album was my thought after Bach’s post as well.
The best that could happen after so many years!

I would love it if it were a double album, but I wouldn’t say “for sure”. Likely “none under seven” doesn’t include segues/intros, which could easily be 4 or 5 of the 11 tracks. I’m expecting something very similar to Lateralus and 10000 Days in terms of length and song layout.

I looked back at it again and I was thinking, “I could have sworn that said April.”

Even better.

So, hypothetically, if the timeline for Lateralus and 10k Days were to roughly correspond with this album (which is a HUGE assumption, I realize), about when could we expect the record to drop?

Can’t find the article but I clearly remember a recent interview where MJK said there was two “primary” calendar dates to release an album these days.

It was The Joe Rogan Experience. I somehow think that Maynard logic was for his own projects. Clearly him and his bandmates have different views on business if his work with APC and Puscifer is any indication (allowed in iTunes and streaming, etc).

Nice, thanks. I optimistic that we’ll see a new Tool album in 2018. I wonder whatever happened to the Opiate recording and wether that’ll make it out as a single or something.

Double album is not confirmed. So far all we know there are 5-6 tracks, including one that is 20 minutes (like DRT was). Sounds like a normal Tool album length to me, but I hope to be proved wrong.

I remember 10,000 Days was recorded during a 3 week stint in August 2005 and that album came out May 2, 2006 so that’s say 8 months or so. I know Danny said the process has evolved a bit since then, but my ‘confidence interval’ or window here ranges from October/November this year all the way through to March/April/May of 2019 for the full album release. I remember Emotive came out on election day in November 2004 so I’m going to be optimistic here and say October 2018

I also remember the whole Vicarious leak thing in late April 2006

The 3 weeks was for drums, vocals and bass. . I remember hearing that Adam worked on guitar layering and sounds for up to 2 months, but maybe I’m wrong.

Yeah 3 weeks in the studio plus tweaking and tweaking until they get it right. I also remember the flying up to Maine to master it thing (celebrating with lobster dinners) or something to do with putting the finishing touches on it etc. Throw in the artwork involved and it could conceivably come out in October/November 2018 but waiting another few months until March/April 2019 is no big deal. I’m just so happy that we are finally seeing updates here after so many years of wanting a new album or hoping they’ve made solid progress. To read that they actually… Read more »

How’s that go, the whole “this is Tool, expect the unexpected”? Not to expect anything, but the talk of Nardicus Maynekneeus being in town in mid-February and them recording in March sounds like a heaping helping of bullshit. Main reason is Mayonaize doesn’t just just listen to the completed music and sing along, he’s an integral PART of the music. No doubt in my mind that with today’s many means of sharing music and such that Mayafterapril is there (in LA) right now to record and etch into that vinyl the finishing touches on the album. These guys know how… Read more »

This sounds like gibberish. Maynard states he has been working on the finished songs for months. Plenty of time for him and how he works. Plus he has had exposure to the music for years prior. How is this news bullshit? This is what we expected to see when TOOL was reaching the finish line. Playing the album for people, Maynard saying he’s basically done, the band is basically done and they now have studio time planned. Not sure what the confusion is here. This kind of news has not surfaced since last time they made a record, back in… Read more »

Intrigued that they have maynard for 3 weeks. Agree with other comments that he will track last so is this stink in March/April just tracking the other instruments with him around and then have him come back in and do vox post-APC tour?

I’d almost expect for it to be even more polished than previously this time around. Meening less time to track. However, could see them being pickier at mixing. No reason to rush now. They have taken their time to get it just so. Certainly a producer will have a say, but I feel they’re pretty confident and set in their ways this time around. Hopefully it is good to go, but also not against outside opinion either. Curious who they will use? I know they showed Botrill a long while ago now. Was that for Opiate re-recording or pre album… Read more »

Danny does his actual drum tracking in a week at most.
Guitar layering will take the longest.
They probably tinker for a few months. The actual recording could take place in this March-April period with mixing and all the other stuff after.

I read on Adam’s Instagram in reply to a comment that they have MJK recording for three weeks in March. I believe it’s in the photo of his wife Korin and two other women dressed as KISS band members.

TOOL WEEKLY UPDATE Rick Beato Uploads video to youtube “what makes this song great?” Featuring Judith from A Perfect Circle. The video is definately worth a watch by any APC enthusiest. We get to listen to actual isolations from all band members on the track, even maynards singing and breakdowns of the song. Adam Jones uploads cryptic livestream featuring… not much. Distorted video, creepy couch lady, and dog whining. Its worth a watch if your in the right state of mind. Any info we can gleam, is that maybe he is working with new video editing software.
