Tool have released a video promo for their upcoming Music Clinic tour, and in a pleasant surprise it features a recording (presumably some form of demo) of the track Descending frequently played live over the last half a dozen years.
Adam also offered a few thoughts on the clinics via Instagram:
Very excited about the upcoming #ToolMisicClinic ‘s. The concept originated from fans wanting to connect & interact with us personally.
An evening to Hang & Learn about what makes Tool tick. 🤔💭 We did this production in Tempe Az and it was really great! We will play and talk and mingle. Exclusive VIP commemorative merch is included and special #Tool memorabilia will be on display. & Don’t let the venue size fool you. *These are SMALL & intimate events (sectioned off to one part of the building). Much better than a room at a Convention Center… #VIP gatherings are limited to just a few hundred guest ONLY. 🙌🏼 ❤ Toolband.com

Teasing with ‘new’ music… Struggling to sell tix?
April 28, 2018 at 1:52 am
Tickets have only been on sale for a week or so. Far too early to be “struggling” enough that a special video is warranted.
April 28, 2018 at 1:55 am
Man, I hope this is not an indication on the direction the mixing is taking. The live snippets of Descending sounded amazing and open wide, this sounds, well poor.

The quality of the recording suggests that it’s clearly some kind of demo, or even just from the soundboard at a live show. There is nothing to be taken from the quality of this recording in comparison to the album.

Yeah…not good
April 28, 2018 at 2:51 am
Oh man this is awesome! I can’t wait for them to do this clinic over here in Cali. As for the quality of music… This is demo quality for sure… it’s a quick promo so don’t get so uppity about it.
I saw part of their music video for Opiate which has the re-recording of the song with 5 minutes added to it when I went to VIP last year. Production on that was fucking amazing! Why is everybody still so pessimistic about TOOL even though we’ve received all of this awesome news lately?
I’m STOKED!

I would really love it if Tool released that version of Opiate. It’s funny how people perceive things. I am super excited for the new album more than ever now. I unfortunately can’t attend the clinic tour but hopefully they have more new music to showcase for those that do attend.

Yeah I’m really hoping the release it. What I heard at VIP is really amazing and the video that accompanies it is just fantastic.
April 28, 2018 at 8:57 am
It’s either a demo or direct sound from a live performance. I see people on YouTube that think this is from the album. LOL…..
It’s a very cool promo that PROBABLY should have been released at the beginning of this news. I got a ticket anyways, but this did help my hype a bit….I just have to not think about the 2 days wasted in a plane.
April 29, 2018 at 8:25 pm
sounds like a soundboard recording to me
April 30, 2018 at 4:19 pm
This ‘song’, which is only a segment of the oldest of their newest songs that allegedly exist, sounds……like a regurgitated 10,000 Days title track alternate. If this is how they expect to build hype for the new album, it’s not working on me. I’m sure I’m very wrong about all of this, but the small impression this very tiny segment of music has been making for almost 3 years now has me a bit discouraged.
April 30, 2018 at 4:23 pm
Not sure that building hype is the real intent of releasing this snippet. Personally I think it’s silly when people read more into it than just them fucking around a bit on stage.
April 30, 2018 at 6:00 pm
Totally agree. It is ridiculous to read into this 3 minute jam at all….
I personally find it quite intriguing. The guitar harkens back to Lateralus more than 10KD, but that’s beside the point. This piece of music may not even be on the new album and if it is, it most likely won’t be in anywhere near this form.

You’ll still buy the album though…

I think its a great piece of music and cant wait to hear what MJK adds to it… Its all gone quite regarding recording tho. Has Maynard finished his bits? Still on for a 2018 release?
May 1, 2018 at 4:32 pm
I think the recent APC tour announcement puts to bed any hope of an 2018 release. My thoughts are that Maynard will record his parts in Arizona over the wine harvest, and not with the rest of the band (who I assume are still tracking). Then following vocals recording there’s still mixing, mastering, etc, so we’re still some way off. I think first half of 2019 is a safe bet.
May 2, 2018 at 3:21 am
This.
No reason why Maynard couldn’t record his vocals in the comfort of his Arizona studio, although I wonder how that messes with the production of it. Either way, I assume he will be able to record his vocals this summer. If so mixing and mastering may not take place until Jan-feb., and then you have promotion and packaging/Ect. I could see them ready for a spring-summer time release and supporting tour. Maybe.

“No reason why Maynard couldn’t record his vocals in the comfort of his Arizona studio, although I wonder how that messes with the production of it.”
Anything works as long as it does, but…..
Historically that’s a marker of a band in discord and produces a bad, perfunctory product.
May 3, 2018 at 10:08 am
In this case I think it’s more a sign that the “traditional” way of doing things is no longer relevant for Tool, though given the 12 year break it’s a safe bet to assume there’s some disharmony in the band
May 5, 2018 at 10:09 am
This is how Maynard did his vocals for APC’s new album and they aren’t in a bad place. People get older and want comfort and convenience as much as possible and why fly to shithole LA when you could record vocals in the comfort of home?
May 1, 2018 at 5:38 pm
To me this is reminiscent of when ‘Divorced’ was released in 2000 just before Salival and Lateralus.
My 4th eye is tingling.
May 3, 2018 at 12:39 pm
Yeah, I bet something similar happens this time… at least, that’s what I’m hoping. A Salival type release with the new Opiate, Problem 8 (if it’s real), and perhaps live versions of the extended Schism, Stinkfist, etc. would be great. I can dream.
May 4, 2018 at 4:42 pm
If Problem 8 existed it would have been shared online years ago.
It’s just classic tool trolling.
Similar to pink floyd’s ‘Publius Enigma’.

Just saw a post on Facebook that all drum tracking is done except for a segue.
