Another month goes by, and we have another newsletter with even Blair admitting there’s not much to share at the moment:
Well… I haven’t heard a peep pertaining to studio updates so make of that what you want. I know that it’s pretty typical in the ‘Tool world’ to be kept in the dark when projects such as recording sessions are ongoing, so what can I say? I’ve tried to get something… anything. I even checked out Hellboy’s fourtheye website to see if he managed to get wind of anything via the Net, but evidently he hasn’t. Keep checking, though (www.fourtheye.net). With that mind, I guess I’ll go have a couple of beers while playing video poker. Should Danny decide to pay me a visit (which he threatened to do a few weeks ago during my visit to Los Angeles), I’ll see if there’s anything that he can say on the record…about the record?
Maybe Danny should pay me a visit as well?
Being an optimist, I think that no news is good news. The band are busy doing their thing, and it seems at the moment that Danny & Justin have done their parts, and Adam is working on his. I suspect he shouldn’t be too far off done. The A Perfect Circle tour is done for now, and Maynard back in Arizona, getting ready to kick off the harvest. I don’t know how/when he’s planning to record, but interviews around the time of Eat The Elephant‘s release suggest he records from home these days. I expect once the instrumental work is done, Evil Joe will fly over and kick off the process.
Hellboy, how does it feel to be the foremost news source for our favorite artists?
I proud to be considered the font of wisdom when it comes to Tool albums, but also disappointed that I don’t really have much to announced. All I can really add is that I did speak to someone who had an instrumental only preview, and superlatives such as “mindblowing” and “incredible” were thrown out.
Hopefully our patience will be rewarded in 2019.
Who did you speak to? And how close are you getting to the Tool machine??
I can’t say anything about the source I’m afraid, but chances are it’s not one any of you would know. It’s a secondary source (ie. not inner circle) but have enough evidence to know that they are legit. The “mindblowing” and “incredible” parts are just opinions though.
I have been very vocal in my feelings about Blair in the past, but I guess it was nice of him to give your site a plug.
You bugged the loft didn’t you? Ha ha!
Sometimes I think about hackers/phreakers eavesdropping on or attaining prototype tracks from Keenan’s private studio or the Loft. Or someone using eavesdropping technology like infrared lasers picking up sound waves off of windows etc. It’s probably good for Tool’s sake that I’m low income and preoccupied with full time work. ha ha!
Hmmm, instrumental preview, “mindblowing” and “incredible” plus Tom Morello’s feedback about something similar… and MJK “going on record” at that recent awards thing to say there’ll be new music in 2019…
So drums are tracked, bass is tracked (?), Adam is currently tracking guitars and MJK has some free time to make wine / record vocals ?
So April/May 2019 maybe? This feels like August 2005 when they said they were in the studio (3 weeks) recording 10,000 days.
If Adam is wrapping up soon, and MJK can record vocals prior to his winter tour with APC, things will be looking good for the album to be out by summer. I still think spring is too early.
Not to be a stick in the mud, but I feel like this newsletter is a little disappointing. Mostly in the sense that, the newsletter format is finally back, the band is finally in the studio, and ever since the beginning of this year they’ve been pretty good at generating some positive buzz around the band and this recording. And yet here they are in the thick of the recording process and the two newsletters that you’d think would easily have at least 1 or 2 insightful tidbits basically just reiterate information that is already known. I mean, he basically… Read more »
The reality is that while 10k Days (and other albums) was being recorded, Blair lived in LA and had regular contact with the band. I believe he now lives in Vegas, and I assume mostly due to distance doesn’t have the same contact with band members.
I’d guess he’s no longer in a position to give the same anecdotal stories he has in the past, and is now almost as reliant as we are on other more formal releases from the band, which as we know are much more few and far between.
All the discussion on when we will finally get this new album has revolved around the recording and mixing process. I don’t mean to be a Debbie Downer, but don’t forget, besides the music, who knows how long Adam will spend on the packaging. While I appreciate all the innovative packaging they have had on all their releases, it’s been so long since we’ve had new music that I’d rather this thing be released sooner with boring packaging, then have that be yet another bottleneck. Hopefully that will not hold this album up too long and we get something by… Read more »
I don’t think packaging has been a real bottleneck for previous albums, and don’t reckon it would be for this one either. I’d be surprised if Adam & co haven’t already started working on that.
Yeah I bet he’s already got tons of stuff worked up for the album cover. One thing Adam seems to do frequently is continue working on his art. Also, he brought in another artist to o the Opiate music video and he said it was really hard to release control to someone else but once it was done he felt really good about it. He may do the same for the artwork on the album. One of the things he had mentioned about that in the VIP session was that “It was cool to see how a fan interprets the… Read more »
Not that I care much about the video but what’s going on with the Opiate video? Why are they just sitting on it? Also, why continue to talk about Problem 8? Hopefully they are planning some sort of EP or something prior to the new album. I supposed we’d have heard something about that, though.
Also, what about the curve ball? Wasn’t that hinted to us years ago? Did they do something that I missed?
I think the curveball was the Opiate rerecording/video. Who knows if it will ever come out, I’ve given up wondering why not at this stage. They’ve been screening at least part of it at VIP session, so I’d guess it’s done.
I can only assume they are saving it for something, perhaps as some kind of promo with the new album.
Salival 2 end of this year. Please. Anything!
