Maynard to feature in Documentary

According to a recent post on Blabbermouth:

a documentary about the efforts of TOOL frontman Maynard James Keenan and his partner Eric Glomski to establish a wine-making industry in Arizona’s Verde Valley is about to go into production. According to Keenan‘s publicist, the film will be co-directed by Christopher Pomerenke and Ryan Page, the same team that made the acclaimed music documentaries “Moog” and “The Heart Is A Drum Machine”. The movie will showcase the “unusual and often metaphysical ” location of the business, described by Keenan as “thick, dense, rich, complex, engaging and spiritual,” while also profiling the mysterious singer and his wine-making partner.

Sounds like a something worth seeing when released.

Puscifer Reviews

A couple of Puscifer Reviews have popped up, on from a reader and Toolarmy member, and the other a more professional review from IGN.

Cirkus from Toolarmy shared his review of the Puscifer Experience, as well as a photo of the setlist:

friday:

was able to get a quick glimpse of the stage during soundcheck and was able to hear 2 songs being rehearsed. full details under the fellowship board, vegas meetup thread.

the concert itself was awesome.

uncle scratch’s gospel revival was very entertaining. crowd-interaction and religious comedy nonstop. “give me back my bible baby”, “i banged a sinner”, “lord took my hand”, etc. bluesy, punk, and sacrilegious, all in one (a divine trinity of sorts).
puscifer was no disappointment. the opening clip, the mr. show-esque short films, and meats meiers “bob cult” footage were all hilarious. i really enjoyed the religion skit as well. that was unique to the friday show. it included televangelism jokes with a priest and nun, pokes at eastern philosophy, and a lovely aging, beer-bellied, dabbling-in-debauchery, comb-over’d, wrinkle covered, and ghetto fabulous diamond-lettered-jesus-rear valor tracksuit wearing neil socket (pronounced both s’o-kay and suck-it) aka maynard.

the music itself was awesome. very tight considering it was the first night, but a little slow-moving and unrehearsed in its transitions. songs were reinterpreted with a slew of different band members. musicians stayed on stage when finished, sitting on lounge furniture. maynard poured and passed wine glasses around. tim alexander surfed the web and twittered throughout. “the mission” with milla was the highlight of the night. the new song “polar bear” was very cool as well.

after the show, i got a hug from danny carey, right before he disappeared through the backstage double doors. i also met several ta members after the show. you know who you are!

setlist thanks to spin.com:

video footage can be found on youtube.

saturday:

got a free fourth row ticket to billy joel, thanks to my friend’s connection with the backup band. billy definitely put on a good show.

sunday:

as the venue filled up, anticipation built up. usgr put on a great show again, and thankfully played “cant bang you on a sunday (guess i’ll have to bang you on a monday)”, a song i heard on their myspace and wanted to hear on friday. they were so kind as to ask the soundboard folks to turn up jesus. a jesus portrait was mic’ed (and the drummer pointed out the portrait was not of david grohl). i ran into the band at the merch table after their set and told them i felt saved. “you are saved, brother” was the response. i also met junior (lighting) at the soundboard before the show. talked for a short bit.

a curtain was removed and a mini trailer on stage was revealed. maynard crawled on stage from the first row somewhere between 9 and 9:30. he went into the trailer and the screens on either side of the stage displayed a video of inside. he was at his computer calling the cast of characters and telling them there was a forgotten third night (some members were playing poker, apparently). a woman was also in the trailer. she had a bright orange wig, but you couldnt see her face. maynard exited the trailer to set up folding lawn chairs and a mini grill with marshmellows.

the songs were much solider than friday, and different versions were played. i felt as though the music was better, but friday was just as good due to the virginity of the event. oh yeah, the woman with the orange wig, fishnetting, and nurse outfit was none other than tim alexander from primus. he joined in on some songs and then went back to drinking wine and eating food in the trailer (he even ate sushi during dozo).

mid-set maynard married juliette to her boyfriend who strongly resembled justin chancellor but was not. juliette had “left her wedding” to come sing at this surprise third show.

the performance was great. i had hoped to witness a cuntry boner encore, but oh well.

here is the setlist for sunday:

Puscifer Setlist

Puscifer Setlist

IGN posted a review of the Friday night show, as well as a couple of pictures that have been round the traps for a while.  Here’s a snippet:

Perhaps the most compelling performance of the show was of the all-new track, “The Mission.” For one “The Mission” is easily Puscifer’s most sophisticated entry to-date with complex vocal layering and a memorable piano progression, but it also features the talents of actress/singer Milla Jovovich. While Jovovich is most recognized for her roles in the Resident Evil film series, she is also an impressive singer. Jovovich’s vocal style is much like her speaking voice – smooth, sweet, and sometimes raspy.

Sounds like they were a great success, and personally I’d love to see a Puscifer performance one day.

The Melvins: Pick Your Battles

The Melvins have a new live release coming out this year. Called Pick Your Battles, it features a collaboration with comic artist Brian Walsby and features live track from two shows – one in 1989 and the other in 2008. These are limited to 3000 so don’t waste time if you’d like to secure a copy:

Once again, Mr. Brian Walsby has compiled a collection of edgy, biting comic art and bad assed, rare tunes from the Melvins. MANCHILD 4 is 100 pages of illustrations and stories from a comic artist who’s been poking fun at subversive youth culture, pop culture, your favorite band, and himself since the early ë80s. You’ll laugh. You’ll cringe. You just might get angry and start a message board war. Contents of Brian’s new book include “No! I Don’t Want To Play Your Effing House Party”, “Frisky’s Beaver Hut”, “We Were All Assholes”, “My First Orgasm”, “Emo Rock Revival”, and tons of others. There’s also an in depth Melvins 2008 tour diary that’s sure to break a few eggs.

Pick Your Battles is a 15 song CD of live Melvins tunes recorded in 1989 at the 924 Gilman St. Project in Berkeley, Ca. and in 2008 at the Paradise Rock Club in Boston. The track list is as follows: Koolegged, Oven, Cranky Messiah, Raise a Paw, Ever Since My Accident, Green Honey, Claude, You’re Blessened, Nude With Boots, The Kicking Machine, Eye Flys, Rat Faced Granny, The Hawk, You’ve Never Been Right, and Boris.

BATABING! There are 3000 of these on earth. How many do you have?

Maynard at Golden God Awards

According to a post on MTV’s Headbangers Blog, Maynard will be featuring at the Epiphone Revolver Golden Gods Awards, which is apparently a new hard rock and heavy metal awards show.  Not sure if he will be performing, presenting, or just being there at this stage.  The awards take place on the 7th of April, and will be hosted by Puscifer buddy Brian Posehn.

The awards ceremony will be televised on MTV2 on the 2nd of May.

Tool January Newsletter

Blair released the Tool January Newletter today, despite the fact it’s February.  It talks about, and includes a picture of a bug found in a readers Vicarious DVD, and includes a vision, which may or may not mean something.  Not sure what to make of it, but the reference to various Toolarmy Ranks and so on could have some meaning.  Change coming to the website soon perhaps?

There’s also a picture of Danny at the recent NBA All-Stars game.  Looks like he could only get a seat in the nosebleed section!

Puscifer Signed Tour Posters on Ebay

Milla emailed me today to tell me that three of the signed tour posters are up on Ebay, each starting at $100.  According to the item notes:

There were 3 Puscifer shows this weekend, (Friday the 13th, Saturday the 14th, and today (Sunday the 15th). There were UNIQUE posters for each show that are ONLY BEING SOLD ON THEIR RESPECTIVE NIGHTS. (meaning that if you went on Friday the 13th, you could only get the Friday the 13th poster … you could NOT get the Saturday or Sunday poster unless you went back to the concert on those nights as well).

Regular Posters were $25.00 (unsigned), and there was a LIMITED number of AUTOGRAPHED SETS for $300.00 which included ALL 3 POSTERS, each signed by Maynard !!!!!!! The Merch booth told me that there were ONLY 20 OF THESE SETS AVALIABLE !!!!

Links are worth checking if only to see what they look like.

Puscifer Review + Pictures

lasvegasnews.com has posted a review of last nights Puscifer show, as well as posting several good pictures:

I went to the Puscifer concert tonight with mixed and somewhat low expectations. I have been a fan of Maynard James Keenan’s work in both of his bands: TOOL and A Perfect Circle. I’m also an avid wine fan and think Maynard hit the ball out of the park with his own Merkin Vineyards Cauduceus wine series. I figured he had to fall at some point and disappoint me eventually, and with all the odd rumors surrounding Puscifer I was expecting to be less than impressed. It sounded so over the top that I just figured for a train wreck. I was very wrong.  In fact, I was quite blown away by the end of the night.

A good review and definitely worth a read.  Thanks to moneyisevil from Toolarmy for the tip.

Puscifer Live Review and Clips

Bellami from Toolarmy posted a brief review of the Puscifer show in Las Vegas last night:

Milla was HOT!!!

The show was composed of video taped comedy skits between Puscifer songs. Like an informal talk show, there was a couch and chairs in the center of the stage where the performers would chill when they weren’t performing. And of course, Maynard pouring his wine for everyone while the taped skits were on.

Mlla was HOT!!!

Opened up with a few taped skits ending with a live skit involving Maynard and a few comedians…then performed:

Sour Grapes
Rev 22:20 – solo by Juliette
Dozo

… some more taped skits….

DWP
The Undertaker
Vagina Mine
Momma Sed

…a few more skits….

Polar Bear — new song – with Tim Alexander joining midway to play alongside Gil Sharone.
Trekka — with Maynard playing mandolin – only time he played an instrument
Indigo Children
The Mission — with Milla!!!
Queen Bee

Milla is Smokin’ HOT!!!

Maynard, Tim Alexander, Gil and Rani Sharone and Juliette performed the Puscifer tunes with Milla in for Mission. Gil Sharone was the main drummer with Tim Alexander joining up during certain parts of most of the songs.

DC and JC were in attendance. There were a lot of empty seats.

Milla is HOT!!!

A shame about all the empty seats.  I guess that’s one of the main problems when people try and scalp tickets for shows that aren’t as popular as expected.  Having said that, suck shit all those scalpers who lost money!

A couple of live clips (audio only) have also been posted on Youtube.  They’re not great quality, so be warned!
