Ever wanted to watch a crazy jam featuring Danny, Neil Peart, Les Claypool and Stewart Copeland. Well now you can! Head over to Neil Peart’s website, and view Danny playing some trombone and drums on an unnamed track.
Thanks to BDP for the tip!

That’s right, it’s finally May 10th (in Australia) and that means Danny has hit the big 5-0! Congratulations old man! I hope those lucky enough to be going to the party enjoy it as much as I enjoy Danny’s drumming:
As noted by Mareckii there is an interesting new post on Danny Carey’s site which talks about a recent BBQ at his place. It includes this tasty snippet:
As the evening progressed, the party moved down to the lower house (so that even more of Danny’s neighours could be disturbed). There, in a basement music room filled with analog synths and vintage guitars, those not to bloated began to have a go at the instruments. After the jamming was over there were reports from those listening to riffs by Adam and Justin (with Danny on drums) that, though unfamiliar, sounded very Toolish. Having slipped out around 10:30 (with smike in my eyes and visions of 150 mg of Zantac), I didn’t hear these myself, so we’ll just have to take their word of this possible sneak preview of things to come. Personally, I’ll be it was just a decoy…
I imagine that was written by Blair (though it doesn’t say) and is accompanied by this photo:

I mentioned this interview yesterday, but this morning when I visited the local magazine emporium, I spotted a copy of issue 64 of DRUMscene featuring Danny and decided to grab a copy (it was only $10). And I gotta say it was $10 very well spent, then interview is one of the best I’ve read, and Danny speaks extensively about where the new album is at, the Live DVD, recording/song writing techniques and more.
In fairness to the magazine and copyright laws, I’m not going to scan it for you guys, however here’s some of the highlights of the interview:
As I said, it’s a great interview, and I would suggest any Australians out there interesting in reading the whole thing head down to their local newsagent and grab a copy! Or you should be able to snag one online here.
According to Milhuisen, Danny will appear in Issue 64 of DRUMscene, apparently Australia’s #1 Drum Magazine. As well as a “huge” interview, it will feature a poster.

I might head over to the newsagent in the morning and see if I can grab a copy.
Also, for those that missed it, copies of Salival and Lateralus Signed Vinyl were made available on the Toolarmy shop yesterday. Took only 20 minutes for the 7 copies of Lateralus to sell, and a little longer for Salival. Apparently there’s more to come, so keep checking!
I had a busy day yesterday ingesting more beer than my body can safely hand. Fitting then that Blair releases the March 2011 Newsletter on Toolband that get the collection nuts of Fourtheye abuzz with excitement. Here’s an excerpt:
In the spirit of this newsletter about Tool memorabilia, "Merch" is going to be putting some nice stuff in the store tomorrow (consider this a head’s up). These items will include vintage tee-shirts (those now out of circulation), tour posters (maybe even a couple of signed ones), and at least one real gem that will have some fans salivating. In the meantime, keep hunting for those Tool rarities. They would sure look good next to that souvenir tour poster that you purchased at the last show.
Well all love a bit of Tool merch, and I know many of you have been hitting up Toolarmy in readiness for this sale, however as I write this tomorrow has yet to arrive and there are no goodies on the site. Perhaps tomorrow tomorrow… Looks like stuff is there – check the Collectibles section!
In other news, A Perfect Circle will be announcing on-sale details for their summer tour on the 4th of April. Presumably this will be the times that tickets go on sale and at what outlets. There doesn’t seem to be any sign of further dates, however there is plenty of speculation (and a gap in the schedule) suggesting that A Perfect Circle could be one of the acts on Lollapallooza this year.
Speaking of APC, drummer Josh Freese has released another range of unique purchase options for his latest EP My New Friends. The $75k package which included a ride in Danny’s Lamborghini was offered, and as I write this appears to have finally sold to someone! Presumably it was purchased for me as a gift for my birthday later this month – thanks in advance!
Tool merch is cool and all, but nothing would beat owning a genuine piece of Melvins history! Point your credit cards at this Ebay auction and buy King Buzzo’s old Hiwatt Cabinet. Current bidding puts it at US$405. Bargain!
Update: It’s come to my attention that I’ve posted this already. It’s worth watching again anyway for good measure…
Aaron Harris tweeted today that he found a series of videos about Danny, recorded sometime around 1996/97. I haven’t had a chance to watch it yet (work has banned Youtube!) but I hear it’s worth watching! Here’s part 1:
And Part 2, Part 3 and Part 4…
Speaking of Twitter, Maynard tweeted a little while ago saying that there really are some A Perfect Circle tour dates coming soon. Only US and Canadian ones though, so Europeans and Australasians shouldn’t get too excited!
In a post today Blair tells us that Danny is tonight’s guest at the Monday Night Jammmz at the Baked Potato. Sound cool for those of us in LA, but the highlighted bit below may be of more interest to most:
DANNY will be performing double duty on this last day in February, first working on new musical arrangements with TOOL and then being the guest drummer at tonight’s MONDAY NIGHT JAMMMZ at the BAKED POTATO jazz club in STUDIO CITY. ARLAN SCHIERBAUM will also join JZ and the others, ripping on an old Wurlitzer and Mini-Moog.

Sounds like Tool aren’t wasting any time having finished their Pacific Ocean tour…
Danny & Justin had another chat with Aussie radio station Triple J the other day, and had the following to say about the upcoming Tool album:
Chatting with Rosie on triple j, band mates Danny Carey and Justin Chancellor were typically cagey when it came to Tool’s first planned release in 5 years.
Even joking that the follow up album to 2006′s 10,000 days should be called “50,000 days”.
However, Carey did admit that while they hope to have the record out by the end of the year, they are still yet to decide on a name.
“That’s usually the last thing that happens and we argue about that while we’re making the final master of the record. We don’t even have names for the songs until then.”
I was forwarded and interview this morning with Danny in the latest edition of Beat magazine. Beat is a street press type magazine from Victoria, and had the chance to speak with Danny in a brief interview. Here’s a slab:
Jambi takes me back to that uncomfortable memory that greeted you at the door of this interview, but Danny mentions it for a good reason: that song’s three divided rhythms provide a telling glimpse into the shape of Tool’s future – and yes, we’re talking the next album.
“It’s a typical Tool song to me; I remember when we were mastering the last record, that was one that I liked to play for people, like, ‘This is where we are, as Tool.’ It’s a good feeling,” Danny says, and Danny is pleased. “We’ve got a couple of great ideas like that that have sort of almost taken off from where that left off that we’re working on. It’s still in its infancy,” he admits, hurriedly, before I can even ask, “and we’re still at the point where we’re just jamming and logging ideas. There hasn’t been a lot of writing and arranging going on; it’s more just in the development, research stages. We’ve got three or four great frameworks that we’re having a lot of fun with, that’s for sure.”
That’s all well and good, I tell him on behalf of us all, but in five years’ time I’ll be over this brooding metal racket thing and courting the sounds of Ornette Coleman in a bid to reinforce my advance into mandatory maturity.
He laughs that deluge of a laugh again, then one he saves for when he’s truly amused. “That’s like the norm, isn’t it? Usually the first two or three songs are the hardest ones, and every once and a while we can get stuck and we’re working on one song for two months or something. I’m hoping it’ll be out… definitely before the end of 2011.”
Some funny anecdotes there too.
The Big Day Out tour kicks off this Friday in Auckland, New Zealand in just over 24 hours time, and then heads over to Queensland for the first leg of the Australian dates. Don’t forget that setlists should only be posted in the appropriate thread (which for tomorrows show is this one), so don’t ruin it for someone else by posting elsewhere…
Not long to wait now!
