Maynard talks about Puscifer and updates us on APC & Tool

UncleJackson emailed me today with this quite interesting interview with Maynard on Loudwire, where he mainly discuss Puscifer, but also comments on his recent work with A Perfect Circle, and the progress on the new Tool album.

Here’s a bit I know interest the majority of you:

Tool are reportedly working on a new album, as well. In the past, you’ve expressed frustration with sitting around in the studio with guitarist Adam Jones and drummer Danny Carey’s aesthetic of going over endless combinations of song structures before committing to anything.

I’m allowing them their space to do what they do, so we’re still in that mode. Even if they told me how close they are to being done, I couldn’t tell you because if I say 60 percent people will start counting down. When it’s done everyone will know. But I haven’t done anything yet. They write forever and then we go in and knock it all out. We’re writing. We’re writing vocals. But nothing’s solid. With Puscifer, there’s ideas and then we’ll record stuff. Then we’ll go back and change stuff and fix stuff and record new stuff before we finally put it all together. But with Tool, we practice jams, but there’s no actual recording going on until it’s time to record.

Are you prepared to tour for a year for the next Tool record whenever it’s ready or have you put your foot down and said, “I don’t want to spend my life on the road.”

It has nothing to do with putting my foot down. Physically, I can’t do it, so that’s not gonna happen. We will tour, but it won’t be the old school dog and pony show of eight months of beating yourself to death.

For most bands now, staying out on the road for a year-plus and selling lots of tickets and merch is the only way to make money because their albums are being downloaded for free by file-sharers.

How much do you need, really? If we can make a living going out for a few weeks a year and keep people satisfied by making sure we play the locations we need to hit, I’m not Kirk Hammett. I don’t need to buy $10,000 guitars every day. That’s not my lifestyle. I love Kirk, but that’s not me. I have a very sustainable vineyard industry in the Valley which will eventually start to pay its own bills.

I love to go on the road and play music for people and express myself, but for it to be something where I’m out there to make money, that’s depressing to me. You end up beating yourself up. Who gives a s–t how much money you have if your back hurts so much you can’t stand up. Money’s not the goal. Having fun making the art, that’s the goal. Finding a nice, happy medium. Being healthy and still expressing what you need to express in an effective way, that’s the ideal.

The end of lengthy world tours comes as no real surprise to me.  I’ve said before (at least in the forums) that I expect Tool’s touring habits will become a little less album orientated, where they hit the road for a month or two once every year or so.  Though I imagine with the new album there will still be a world tour, it just may not be so tightly scheduled as it has been in the past.

The Pot video production starting soon

While things may appear to be quiet on the Tool front, perhaps it’s not as quiet as it may seem.  Word is that production on the next Tool video, for the 10,000 Days track The Pot is rumoured to be starting very soon.  Possibly as soon as this week.

For those that need a little reminding about this video, in September 2009 Adam mentioned the following in a Guitar World interview:

Adam Jones: We’re working on ‘The Pot’ but Ive been really lazy lately[Laughs]. The setup for it is a-lot more epic, so its actually good that we’ve been able to have more time. Its going to be all stop motion and in 3D. We’re doing it so that we can hopefully have it shown in the theater. A-lot more theaters are going digital and those projectors can do 3D. We have a *consultant who worked with us on the 3D packaging for 10,000 Days, and he was telling me that in 10 to 20 years you wont need goggles for 3D, you’ll go to the movie theater and everything will look 3D. Its almost holographic. Its really exciting. Sorry, gimme a chance to nerd out and I will [Laughs]

So about 18 months later, it looks at though this may come to fruition, and perhaps become a Xmas present for Tool fans?

10 Years of Lateralus

In all the carry on surrounding Danny’s 50th, we forgot to celebrate another significant milestone – 10 years of Lateralus (thanks to hodge for the reminder). For many of us this is our favorite Tool album (it is for me) and to celebrate I ask you all to post your thoughts on this excellent album in the comments below.

For me I remember the first time I heard Schism when was released and thought this was a cool track, but a little less heavy than I wanted. In the coming weeks before the actual album release, there was a stream somewhere on the net of The Grudge, which pretty much blew me away, and after hearing it I knew Lateralus was going to be a great album.

In those days, we used to actually buy CD’s, and I had pre-ordered my copy from the now closed Big Star Records here in Adelaide. I remember being called a couple of days before being told I could pick up the album on Sunday, so that morning, after dropping my girlfriend off to her soccer match, I headed into town and picked up the CD, stuck it in the CD player in the car, gave it my first listen.

I remember being overwhelmed by the album, particularly the last half in a manner I was by Aenima. I was unsure how much I really liked it, though much like their previous album, on repeated listens it became clearer and clearer that this was an amazing piece of work.

There isn’t really a track I don’t like on the album – The Grudge and Lateralus are stand out tracks for me, a Parabola probably my least favorite. Which tracks do you prefer? Below is a poll which should allow you to select your favorite 3 tracks from Lateralus:

Lustmord Songs of Gods and Demons

A recent post on Toolband this morning highlights the new release from Lustmord Songs of Gods and Demons that is now available from his website.  While Lustmord’s work is quite interesting, what’s even more interesting to Tool fans is this snippet:

The CD includes "The Blasted Plain", the companion piece to the music Lustmord did for the VICARIOUS DVD menu.

I don’t even remember the music/noise from the Vicarious DVD menu, so perhaps I’ll stick it in my drive later today and check it out…

March Tool Newsletter, Other Stuff!

I had a busy day yesterday ingesting more beer than my body can safely hand.  Fitting then that Blair releases the March 2011 Newsletter on Toolband that get the collection nuts of Fourtheye abuzz with excitement.  Here’s an excerpt:

In the spirit of this newsletter about Tool memorabilia, "Merch" is going to be putting some nice stuff in the store tomorrow (consider this a head’s up). These items will include vintage tee-shirts (those now out of circulation), tour posters (maybe even a couple of signed ones), and at least one real gem that will have some fans salivating. In the meantime, keep hunting for those Tool rarities. They would sure look good next to that souvenir tour poster that you purchased at the last show.

Well all love a bit of Tool merch, and I know many of you have been hitting up Toolarmy in readiness for this sale, however as I write this tomorrow has yet to arrive and there are no goodies on the site.  Perhaps tomorrow tomorrow… Looks like stuff is there – check the Collectibles section!

In other news, A Perfect Circle will be announcing on-sale details for their summer tour on the 4th of April.  Presumably this will be the times that tickets go on sale and at what outlets.  There doesn’t seem to be any sign of further dates, however there is plenty of speculation (and a gap in the schedule) suggesting that A Perfect Circle could be one of the acts on Lollapallooza this year.

Speaking of APC, drummer Josh Freese has released another range of unique purchase options for his latest EP My New Friends.  The $75k package which included a ride in Danny’s Lamborghini was offered, and as I write this appears to have finally sold to someone!  Presumably it was purchased for me as a gift for my birthday later this month – thanks in advance!

Tool merch is cool and all, but nothing would beat owning a genuine piece of Melvins history!  Point your credit cards at this Ebay auction and buy King Buzzo’s old Hiwatt Cabinet.  Current bidding puts it at US$405.  Bargain!

Tool Big Day Out Posters

I’ve dropped a few hints in the forums in regards to Tool Big Day Out Posters possibly being available online following the tour, and tonight I received the news that this is indeed the case.  Melbourne printers Beyond The Pale printed all of the posters for the 2011 tour (excluding Hawaii I think) and the leftovers, all unsigned are available from their website.

Limited quantities from the Melbourne side show, Melbourne Big Day Out and Auckland Big Day Out are all available, and each of them cost AU$35 plus postage.  There’s also a range of other bands posters on the website, the artwork and printing that these guys to are top quality, and they do frame poster as well, so make sure you check it out!

I was lucky enough to visit their gallery when I was in Melbourne, and though not advertised on the website, I reckon there were several other Tool posters available in the store, including the Gold Coast Big Day Out poster, and a range of other US ones I reckon I’ve seen around the place before.  If you’re down in St. Kilda one day, it’s definitely worth a visit!

And the winner is…..

The cut off for the Fourtheye Flood Appeal has been and gone, and this morning with the help of a random number generator (at random.org which happened to pick #22), I selected the winner from 108 entries from a pool of 26 people in total.  Without further ado, the winner appears to be a guy called Steve, who on further inspection seems to be Kittaan.  Congratulations and I’ll be in touch in the next couple of days so you can tell me what size and style shirt you’d like!

In total we raised $541.66 for the Queensland Flood Appeal, and I shall be making that donation in the next couple of days!  Thank to everyone for their support!

Gold Coast Poster/Shirt

Jujano kindly shared with me a pic of the Gold Coast Big Day Out shirt he purchased.  Poster is the same:

Update 2: Just as I post this, the Big Day Out site has published this on and the Brisbane one, which I must say looks fucking awesome:

Update 2: And so Toolband doesn’t miss out on the action they just posted the Auckland poster:

A Perfect Circle track recorded? Newsletter + Tool goodies on Ebay

According to a recent tweet by Antiquiet (and also on Billy Howerdel’s Facebook so I hear):

Maynard and I just got done tracking some vocal for a new APC song

Hopefully this means we’ll see a new A Perfect Circle track sometime in the not too distant future.

As I posted a few days ago the December Newsletter was just released.  Now I’ve had a chance to read it, here’s a few things I’ve picked up:

  • Tool are still writing for the next album and we probably shouldn’t expect a release until late 2011
  • Adam has been in the UK doing stuff, and depending on how you read it, could have recorded with Robert Fripp, had something repaired (a guitar amp perhaps) or just had some beers.
  • Things are maybe happening as far as the various Tool websites are concerned.
  • Maynard is enjoying some more winemaking
  • Tool nearly supported Rush in Brazil (or may do so in the future).
  • Aaron Harris might post some notes from the road for us.

Feel free to add anything I missed below!

Finally hold your light from Toolarmy has had to reluctantly sell some of his Tool related goodies on Ebay.  Here are the links:

Happy Bidding!
