- You like noisy music?
- Yes. The louder the better. Stops me from thinking.
- You don't like to think? What do you like?
- Never thought about it.

Not gonna lie Und, I'm jealous of your musical tastes. Wish I could enjoy stuff like that.

Can't really say. That stuff just doesn't move me. My tastes are mostly limited to certain genres. I try to branch out, but I can't force myself to like things that I don't, even though I want to have more diverse taste. It's weird.

Re: What are you listening to?
In my opinion, it’s pointless to “try to like” art... you either like it or you don’t. That’s not to say that your tastes don’t change over time, they likely will. And the more you experiment and open yourself up to different experiences, the more likely you’ll find things that float your boat. It’s purely subjective. Don’t overthink it.

Re: What are you listening to?
I guess it depends on what you mean by "try". Like if you're just staring at a painting hoping that through sheer effort you'll like it then I might agree, but I think there's value in trying to understand something even if you don't necessarily like it because sometimes the context matters and there are things you might need to know before approaching something.

Re: What are you listening to?
I think Kittaan was spot on. You just have to be open to what you are listening to. Try not to compare things. I have always been fairly open to different styles of music, but it wasn't until my late twenties/early thirties that I really starting exploring some of the more obscure stuff out there. I know you love Tool and Maynard and everything related to all that but maybe the intensity of your appreciation might be getting in the way. Not a knock, just a thought, and I certainly could be completely off.gamebounty wrote:Can't really say. That stuff just doesn't move me. My tastes are mostly limited to certain genres. I remember when I started to explore Drone. At first it was just noise. But the more I exposed myself to it the more I started to appreciate all the subtle nuances that change tone and texture and create really fascinating pieces of music.
So much incredible music out there I would hate to see you miss out on it, but ultimately it is about what makes you happy.

Re: What are you listening to?
I agree with Kitaan that it's kind of a pointless pursuit. I mainly want to improve my tastes so that my own creativity can be improved as well. What great artist doesn't have great tastes, you know? But again, it's something that can't be forced.
I do also try to just appreciate things even though I don't like them. Sometimes I have a hard time with that too though. I recently was checking out The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and Neutral Milk Hotel, but I was struggling to see why they're so highly praised. Wish I could though.
And I most definitely am a Maynard fanatic, but I don't think it's to the point where I'm blind. I'm not a big fan of the latest APC and Puscifer albums, after all.

I'd say a fair few, Ozzy is known only to listen to his own stuff.gamebounty wrote:What great artist doesn't have great tastes, you know?

I've been flying the flag for "growing" musical tastes here for years - to little or no effect.
It may have a lot to do with the fact that I'm overtly disliked/ignored on this forum tho'.
Anyway....carry on.

Re: What are you listening to?
@tyson: That's a good point. I feel a little better. Thanks brother!
@Calfium: Impressive my dude.
Meanwhile, I've been listening to this a lot. It astounded me when I heard it on acid. In particular, I think the middle section during the talk box solo (or whatever it is) is one of the most impressive musical compositions in all of rock.

Just f’n with ya mate. When you get past the overt racism, homophobia and the misplaced right wing rhetoric... and the god awful musical choices... yer not so bad at all. Feel better now big guy?
