American Beauty is kinda underrated nowadays. It was overrated when it came out, but it's still a good movie. I do love Sam Mendes though.

Movies date and what is novel is soon imitated and expanded upon. I just know that when I first saw the movies I listed they struck a cord. I really enjoyed Mendes's Revolutionary Road as well and Kevin Spacey is one of my favourite actors.

To this day I do not understand why Last Action Hero bombed.

Was it ahead of its time or something? Awesome flick.

Imagine being Arnold in that scene and having to be all like "damn, Jamie Curtis, you fuckin' fine, all sexy with your tight body and horrific androgynous monster face. I would totally have sex with you, both my character and the real me." when all he really wants to do is fuck another 16 year old in his dressing room. Like seriously imagine having to be Arnold and not only sit in that chair while Jamie Lee Curtis flaunts her disgusting body in front of you, the favorable lighting barely concealing her stretchmarks and leathery skin, and just sit there, take after take, hour after hour, while she perfected that dance. Not only having to tolerate her monstrous fucking visage but her haughty attitude as everyone on set tells her she's STILL GOT IT and DAMN, JAMIE LEE CURTIS LOOKS LIKE *THAT*?? because they're not the ones who have to sit there and watch her mannish fucking gremlin face contort into types of grimaces you didn't even know existed before that day. You've been fucking nothing but a healthy diet of blondes and supermodels and later alleged rape victims for your ENTIRE CAREER coming straight out of the boonies in Austria. You've never even seen anything this fucking disgusting before, and now you swear you can taste the sweat that's breaking out on her dimpled stomach as she sucks it in to writhe it suggestively at you, smugly assured that you are enjoying the opportunity to get paid to sit there and revel in her "statuesque (for that is what she calls herself)" beauty, the beauty she worked so hard for with personal trainers in the previous months. And then the director calls for another take, and you know you could kill every single person in this room before the studio security could put you down, but you sit there and endure, because you're fucking Arnold. You're not going to lose your future political career over this. Just bear it. Hide your face and bear it.

No idea, it's like movie critics at the time had no concept of what satire is.

Fuck it why not. No particular order.

Scarface (1980's version)
Last of the Mohicans
Point Break
Joe Dirt
Predator
Terminator 1 & 2
Naked Gun
Die Hard
Dumb & Dumber

Honestly I'm not too sure about the last spot, there's too many floating around in my head.

Well, at least you're consistant. Somebody mentions JLC and you are all over it every time.

Well, at least you're consistant. Somebody mentions JLC and you are all over it every time.
First, it's consistent.

Second, “JLC” is a term co-opted for use as a meaningless pejorative in order to vaguely call someone else’s authenticity into question and, by extension, claim authenticity for yourself.

It serves no conversational function and imparts no information, save for indicating the opinions and preferences of the speaker.

Meanwhile, a market myth has sprung up around the term, as well as a cultural bogeyman consisting of elusive white 20-somethings who wear certain clothes (but no one will agree on what), listen to certain music (no one can agree on this either), and act a certain way (you’ve probably sensed the pattern on your own).

You can’t define what “that kind of behavior or fashion or lifestyle” actually is, nor will you ever be able to. That’s because you don’t use “JLC” to describe an actual group of people, but to describe a fictional stereotype that is an outlet for literally anything that annoys you.

The twist, of course, is that if it weren’t for your own insecurities, nothing that a “JLC” could do or wear would ever affect you emotionally. But you are insecure about your own authenticity - “Do I wear what I wear because I want to? Do I listen to my music because I truly like it? I’m certainly not like those filthy JLCs!” - so you project those feelings.

Suffice it to say, no one self-identifies as a JLC; the term is always applied to an Other, to separate the authentic Us from the inauthentic, “ironic” Them.

Ravenpig wrote:Point Break
In 1991 during the filming for 'Point Break' Keanu Reeves (whose role involved playing rookie FBI agent 'Johnny Utah') was surfing with co-stars when a small child was dragged under the waves and began to struggle to stay above surface. As his co-stars rushed to help, Reeves held out an arm infront of them, stopping them and was reported saying by Lori Petty (who played the character Tyler Endicott in the film) "The waves have claimed her, let her fight for her own life". The crew, dumbfounded, proceeded to watch her struggle until her body disappeared beneath the waves, lifeless. He was later spotted outside the child's house, making drowning gestures and thanking the family for their child's sacrifice to the great ocean.

The last 10 minutes or so of that movie (starting when they get to the Mohawk chief) are probably my favorite 10 minutes in movies ever. Great stuff.

My Dad took me to view this film, not my little brother, just him and I.

Feels.
