Mostly because Australia (and other countries) are the first ones past the international date line. Spotify, et al are automated so that the music is turned on at midnight local time. Australia would in theory be one of the first to get the release.
That said, I expect the album will be available in one form or another before the switch gets flicked on streaming services.

I get that. But if Tool were doing a surprise release I would think they would release it at the same time across the world and I don't think that time would be chosen based on Australian time zones.

Not exactly news, but just read an interview with Kirk Hammett who said that he speaks to Adam a lot and last time they spoke Adam said he's finishing the artwork then they are good to go with the new album.

Yeah, I read that last week as well. I'd be hopeful that most of the artwork was done in the last 12 months, and that the only things really done in the last month or so is just title and tracklist confirmation.

cool. hadnt heard about the artwork possibly being worked on for quite awhile. it makes sense though.
a surprise release wont happen. they still have a record contract and i super highly doubt they would be ok with a surprise! release..this is a big deal and its going to be promoted in advance so everyone knows and hype builds up etc etc. even if it wasnt tool/13 years i dont think record companies would like surprise releases with anything.
ive had my mind around getting the single a month before the album drops. it shortens the wait!

I guess the only question apart from release date is what's gonna happen with digital release? They must have come to an agreement about that with their label otherwise they are both going to miss out on some serious cash.

I wonder if they've thought about sending a cease and desist to the artist with the name "Tool" on Spotify. They're surely getting a healthy amount of plays from people looking for the actual Tool.
