Both. I mainly use Spotify, but if I really admire an artist's work, or if Spotify simply doesn't have what I'm looking for, I'll just hit up YouTube or buy the album. In the past month alone I dropped a good $40 on CDs
Just a thought, but I'd like to put forth an argument: I don't believe illegal downloading is responsible for the shit music that climbs the chart. As technology becomes easier to use and more widely available, it makes sense that more and more people would take advantage of it. Therefore, it isn't illegal downloads, but Garage Band, YouTube, Acid (in before drug pun), and other recording software/distribution models. In essence, it isn't that music has gotten SHITTIER, it's just easier to spread, and thus, we're more aware of it than we were previously.
In the past day alone I've spent $60 on CDs. Lol.

Downloading music has ruined the music industry. Â There is a direct connection between illegal downloading and the wave of utterly shitty music being produced these days. Â Since record companies can no longer profit from the substantial investments they make in an artist they're now not willing to invest much at all. Â Because of that the airways are now polluted with this cheaply produced hipster electronic keyboard faggotry. Â Look at what won all those awards last Grammys, Goyote! Â That kind of music is fucking horrible and makes me want to torture kittens.
LOL, what an idiotic opinion, go back and look at the grammys as a whole or even the music industry, it's always been popular music in the charts, always. There is no direct connection between illegal downloading and the wave of utterly shitty music being produced these days at all, it has always been that way. You do realise Goyte released his first 3 albums independently, produces all his albums and writes and records all his own songs? So what exactly does that have to do with a record company? What's in it for them???

Haahaa! Â You sure know a lot about Goyte. Â That speaks volumes.Â

I generally download first and ask questions later.
I don't buy CD's anymore unless the artwork that comes with it is of some note. Â Given the choice I will always buy vinyl over CD.
I don't and probably never will buy via iTunes or other such stores. Â I do buy music digitally from sites such as Bandcamp where there is no client required or DRM incorporated with the files.
I don't agree that downloading has ruined the music industry. Â I actually listen to a much wider variety of bands than I ever did, mainly due to easy access to a range of musicians work. Â I do believe however that the days of "alternative" artists such as Nirvana, Pearl Jam being superstars are over. Â There will be a big divide between the superstars of future and the average garage rock band. Â I do think however it will be easier for artists to make living in the industry, however dreams of riches and popularity may have to be tempered.

Yeah I agree. The industry isn't dying it's just changing. Hopefully for the better, though that's a hard thing to predict.

Other than buying some music direct from artists, this is me to a T.

 Agreed with this sentiment.
Last CD I bought was Koi No Yokan, and that was after I pirated it. I only bought it b/c it had been since 10K days that I have bought a CD and I thought what the hell...
The only physical CD's I have left and will keep are my Tool CD's, save the one's that are still kicking around in my 350 slot CD binder (any 90's kids remember those?).
Several sealed first edition main albums, promo's, etc. (all of the promo's I bought off the 'bay so take that as it is.)Â They are part of my collection. If I wasn't a collector of Tool stuff and just a casual fan I would not have any CD's left.
I like vinyl, or the idea of it, and will probably get around to starting a collection soon. Deftone's live trax and Tool exclusively me thinks...
In the end it is to each their own. I like pirating since I am a tight ass with my money and hate spending $13 on a piece of plastic. Also hate that I would have to rip the CD and then put it on my phone. Too many steps for a far too lazy American.
Like others have said on here; keep going to shows and buying merch at said shows and the band will get "theirs".

I'd prefer to see the artist live first and foremost. Usually go to about 15 shows on average per year. Buy merchandise and maybe get introduced to other bands that are playing the gig with them.Â
I tend to buy on iTunes, Badncamp for ease of access and fair price. I agree that 'going digital' in terms of sales has cheapened music in the eyes of the commercial crowd. And at the same time, it has given the indies out there an amazing platform to reach out to all kinds of audiences.
I only torrent if I can't find something I am looking for. I think YouTube previews actually helps the artist more than it does harm overall. If your music is good ( to anyone's ears ), people will find you eventually via their search, recommendations from others, etc. There is just too much music out there, it will take forever to give justice to it.
Just enjoy the music and support the artist whenever and however you can.

When I buy music, I tend to buy direct from the artist's website, sometimes from the independent shops (these are good for Vinyl) around Melbourne and very rarely from the large chain stores we have here called JB HiFi. The chains rarely have what I'm after though. I've bought stuff off Amazon sometimes and websites that specialise in genres or underground stuff.Â

I pirate and buy physical when/if I can. The whole industry is a joke now, so unless you're buying directly from the artist, they're probably not getting shit.
Bands and musicians make money from touring and merchandise, and I have no problem giving my cash to go see a show and buy a T-shirt.
This is me.
