Is 7his the bes7 7rack on 7he album?
[Intro]
Keep calm
Keeping it calm
Keep calm
Fuck, here we go again

[Verse 1]
Heat lighting flash, but don't blink. Misleading
Tranquility ruse
You're gonna happen again
That's what I think
Follow the evidence
Look it dead in the eye
Your darkness
Trying to lull us in, before the havoc begins, into a dubious state of serenity

[Bridge]
Acting all surprised when you're caught in the lie
We know better
It's not unlike you
It's not unlike you
We know your nature

[Verse 2]
Blame it all on the bastards when you're blowing out
Shame on you
Shame on you now
No amount of wind could begin to cover up your petulant stench and demeanor
Calm as cookies and cream, so it seems
We're not buying your dubious state of serenity

[Bridge]
Acting all surprised when you're caught in the lie
We know better
It's not unlike you
It's not unlike you
We know your nature

[Verse 3]
Calm before the torrent comes
Calm before the torrent comes
Calm before the 7empest comes to rain all over

[Bridge]
Disputing intentions invites devastation
A 7empest must be
True to its nature
A 7empest must be just that
A 7empest must be just that
A 7empest must be just that
A 7empest must be just that
A 7empest must be just that
A 7empest must be just that
A 7empest must be just that
A 7empest must be just that

[Verse 4]
Control, your delusion
Insane and striking at random
Victim of your certainty, and therefore your doubt's not an option
Blameless, the 7empest must will be just that
So try as you may, feeble, your attempt to atone
Your words to erase all the damage cannot

[Outro]
A 7empest must be just that
A 7empest must be just that
A 7empest must be just that
A 7empest must be just that

For me this song was a real suprise and immediatly reminded me of the songs from Opiate or Undertow.

It starts perfect (!) and is just the biggest fun to listen to, but damn, it's too long and just fades into endless guitar soli I don't enjoy
listen to. It never gets back to the fantastic first third. A real bummer

And now boys and girls, keep calm, that's just my opinion.

EDIT: I hope "bummer" is the right word. I don't mean it's bad, I mean it's a shame that it doesnt remain as good as it starts.

In the opposite boat - could use without what sounds to me like a watered down Opiate/Undertow track (esp the vocals), whereas the last two thirds really start to go places that sound like a proper update of those earlier sounds. To each their own. Was initially my least favourite track but is growing on me slowly, even it meanders a bit.

The majority of the vocals feel kind of corny to me. I do like the "calm before the tempest comes to rain all over" part.

According to Justin...

"“There are riffs on the new album that Adam had before I was even in the band,” he offers. “The last track, ‘7empest’ [pronounced Tempest], the main body of the first chunk of the song is a verse and then a really heavy recurring riff, something I came up with in [the time signature of] 21. We’d been trying to find [another riff that goes with it], and it ended up being something we’d tried on several albums, with different ideas, and it just never clicked. And then all of a sudden there it is and it works, and it totally is the complete thing that the other riff needed. I think Adam had that riff when we were trying to write for [1996’s] Aenima album. It just kept getting brought up and put on the side.

“Adam’s really cool like that,” he adds. “He’s very precious about the ideas we have and he’s always like, ‘Don’t forget about that, we’ll use it one day. You can’t be frivolous about them. You’ve got to respect the fact that they’re really worth something when you first come up with them and you think they’re good, so don’t throw them away.’ So we have this huge catalogue of stuff that we keep on the backburner.”"

Love it but it could be longer.... I'm thinking of editing it and adding in some other solos and such.

Its really unfortunate that Adam clearly held back on this track. He really could have let loose and went all out with riffs. Oh well

Holy shi7 man “tempest comes to rain all over” is dope when Maynard sings it but when Adam comes and solos after and plays the fucking solo to what Maynard was singing earlier is heaven! Listen for it, it’s so fucking good. His notes are the syllables to the lyrics at one point.

What makes it even better is that’s Maynard pre layering the lyrics to match the solo before it even fucking HAPPENS. and some say he phoned it in? Go fuck yourself.

Nice catch, will have to listen for that. This is the shortest 15min song I've ever heard. Watershed track imo, so much of their history packed in there.

Anyone else hear the languid refrain Justin is playing towards the end as a callback to the heavy main riff in Pneuma? Similar but simplied? He mentioned there being some themes running throughout the album. I feel like I heard it somewhere else too, but can place it.

This album is dense.

Such an oldschool Tool song.

After reading Justin saying Adam had one of these riffs since before he (Justin) even joined the band, it just made sense. It's an Undertow song written with Justin. Right down to the lyrical content.

7empest brings me back to hearing Undertow/Aenima era TOOL for the first time! Same when I heard to opening riff to Jambi like Undertow/Aenima TOOL mixed with Meshuggah!
Still unpacking this beast but for sure one of the Fastest 15 minute tracks I've ever experienced!

This song is like a time machine, it throws me back to 1996, when I discovered Tool for the first time in my life. Soooo good.

After multiple listens I am breaking this epic song down into 4 parts:

The first 5:35 - heavy, fast, riffs, grooves and angry MJK vocals/lyrics.

5:35 - 9:35 - Adam Jones taking the spotlight while Danny & Justin maintain a solid rhythm.

9:35 - 11:45 - MJK comes back and the song builds to a great climax, especially from 10:30 onward.

11:45 - 15:44 - the song winds down and then rises slightly again to finish strongly.

They probably could have finished it at the 12 minute mark but I do enjoy the build up again and Maynard's "Control your delusion... " verse right at the end. I cannot wait to see them play this live. It should be the final song before the intermission because they'll need a 10 to 15 minute break afterwards :)

Justin really harnessed some Paul Darmour on this. The main bass groove sounds so opiate / undertow inspired

This one is growing on me, an amazing effort from all of the guys, never thought i’d hear Adam do such a solo, Justin’s bass is scary and Danny is 58 years old and doing this kinda shit. The 15 minutes fly without me noticing.

I was afraid of hearing this song on my first listen cuz of all the reviewers cumming over this song. But then after that first minute buildup I then shat my pants after he goes "Fuck! Here we go again!" Fuckin totally get that Opiate/Undertow throwback! It's undeniable! Fuckin love this song!!!
Is it just me when he says "calm before the torrent comes" I hear "Come before atonement comes"
"Come before the toll man comes"
"Calm before the torrent comes"
"Calm before the 7empest comes"
I know. It's me. But I can't shake it!

So the part "A 7empest must be just that" has a similar feel to "Prying open my Third Eye"! Also counting them out this morning the both have 7 syllables! Love that part by the way adds some aggressiveness towards the end of 7empest.
