Stuff

A few snippets of info the last couple of days.

CorpseGrindeR (who’s definitely NOT Gay) on Toolarmy posted a few links to some nice Tool photos yesterday. No idea who took them, but they appear to have been taken by someone in the crowd at the recent Tempe show. Dial-up users take not, they’re big pictures!

Toolband/Army has confirmed that Tool are playing the Street Scene festival in San Diego on the 5th of August.

Finally, here’s a picture of Maynard which is the Chartattack photo of the week!

Street Scene 06

Apparently Tool are playing at the Street Scene Festival in San Diego on the 4th or 5th of August. Looks like Tool will be all over the place around then. San Diego early AUgust, Japan in the middle (plus Oz/NZ?) and then back to the US for their arena tour. Good way to build up the frequent flyer points I suppose!

Other bands on the gig include Queens of the Stone Age, Tricky, Bad Religion and a whole stack of presumably crap bands starting with “The”.

Living Colour, Rumours

For those of you who live in Sydney, and have nothing to do on Saturday night (the 20th) make sure you get on over to The Roxy to see one of my favorite bands – Living Colour.  These guys (as well as Tool and Faith No More) we’re probably the biggest influences on me musically when I was younger.  Sadly, they’re touring nowhere near Northern Queensland, so I won’t get to see them.

All four members of the band are at the top of their fields, and music lovers won’t be dissappointed with their skills, and musical talent.  Make sure you support them, so that they feel like coming down here again at a time when I might be able to catch them!

Finally, there’s a bit of a rumour going around about the forthcoming Vicarious DVD.  None of this seems to be based on any evidence I’ve seen, but distortiononline printed it, so I will too:

In other news, a huge rumor regarding the release date and content of the “Vicarious” DVD has surfaced. Supposedly, it will be released on June 6 (06/06/06 aka 666) and will also contain a video for “Wings for Marie/10,000 Days” (18+ mins.) And as another shocker, the rumor states that there will be 4 concert recordings (3 from 2002, 1 from 2006). If this is true, this is fantastic news. -EyeChakra

Think of it what you will……

Maynard Interview

Bruised_Kiwi in Toolnavy posts this interesting interview with Maynard.  Here’s one of the highlights:

JR: A lot of the longer songs on your records take place near the end of the album but you chose to put a 17 minute monster (“Wings for Marie” and its counterpart “10,000 Days”) near the beginning of the record and surprisingly it doesn’t wreck the flow of the album at all.

MJK: Originally it was going to close out the record because of its length but we didn’t think it gave the record a really cohesive flow. On this album more than others, we tried to construct it as if it were one long composition. (pause) Yeah, the order of the songs was way different a month ago.

Those of you still a little sore after recent A Perfect Circle news, probably won’t enjoy this interview!

Record Sales

Not really any news today, so I though I’d quickly comment on the recent record sales.  We all know that Tool sold 564,000 copies of 10,000 Days in the US, which is an impressive figure for any band, and outstrips the sales on Lateralus as well.  As it turns out, that’s the highest selling CD in one week so far in 2006.

Since the Red Hot Chilli Peppers new CD was coming out, I thought this record would soon be broken, especially considering how popular Dani California seems to be at the moment, not to mention the large amount of press RHCP are getting, here in Australia at least anyway.  So I was surprised when I read this article saying that Stadium Arcadium only sold 442,500 copies last week.

To me this shows a number of possibilities:

  • 10,000 Days is a better CD than Stadium Arcadium?
  • Tool fans are more supportive of the band?
  • Tool fans are more likely to buy 10,000 Days in the first week than to wait for it?
  • Publicity makes a smaller impact on record sales than is thought?
  • Elaborate packaging really does make an impact on record sales?
  • More Red Hot Chilli Peppers fans chose to download, and then not purchase than Tool fans?
  • RHCP are just not as popular as Tool are, despite market hype?
  • RHCP are less popular in the US than the are in Australia, where I would consider RHCP to definitely more popular that Tool?
  • RHCP suck, where as Tool rules!
  • Tool fans, desparate for some new songs, rushed out to purchase this CD the day it came out?
  • RHCP fans, who’ve had no shortage of releases, are not quite as desparate?

Personally I think Stadium Arcadium will ultimately stay higher in the charts for longer than Tool, and probably sell more CD’s in total than 10,000 Days.  Either way, congratulations to Tool on selling more CD’s than RHCP in the first week, it certainly took me by surprise.

And Maynard, I’m sure that new wing on the Vineyard will be there soon enough…

Coachella Newsletter

The Coachella newsletter is now up, and features many good photo’s of the band. Haven’t actually read it yet, but knowing Blair I’m sure it’s and interesting read (or crap, depending on your personal feelings towards Blair). It appears there’s a Toolarmy exclusive part, but from what I can see it’s just a single photo of Justin, take from somewhere near Adam‘s feet.

And no I won’t be posting it on Fourtheye.

I’ll post this one instead:

APC in Stasis

MTV spoke with Billy Howerdel recently regarding the status of A Perfect Circle, and he also confirms that APC will not be back in the near future.  Though he and Maynard are both unwilling to say it’s over:

“[Maynard and I have] talked about it lightly. A few months ago, it was like, ‘If we did A Perfect Circle again, I’d want to do this or that.’ It was a benign conversation. I think we both entertain the fact that it could happen again, but for right now we don’t have any plans to do it again. We’re focusing on what we’re doing now. A Perfect Circle is done for now.”

It was good while it lasted I suppose, though as much as I like APC, I find it hard to get upset about their demise.
