Adam and Alex Grey Collectors Set

For those of you who missed the Signed Salival Sale the other day, and still have US$200 burning a hole in your wallet, a Collectors Set available at the CoSM website is for you. Featuring copies of the Vicarious and Parabola DVD signed by Adam, as well as the Revolver Tool issue signed by both Adam and Alex.

Presumably limited so don’t miss out!

Tool in Guitar Hero 4?

A usually reliable source told me over the weekend that Tool will be appearing in Guitar Hero 4, with the track Schism, Vicarious and Parabola available to play.  Apparently the graphics used during the songs will not be the usual seen in GH, but a conglomerate of Alex Grey artwork and the eyes from Lateralus and Aenima.  More details on this as they come to hand.

Sounds like fun, but personally I’d be a little dissappointed with the track selection if this was the case.  I wouldn’t have minded seeing Stinkfist, Aenima, or for something a little more challenging – Rosetta Stoned.  What would you guys like to see?

CoSM Benfit in Los Angeles

According to Toolband/Army:

There will be a benefit party for ALEX GREY’s CHAPEL OF SACRED MIRRORS (CoSM) at CRASH MANSION in Los Angeles on FRIDAY, JANUARY 18. The party will include LIVE PAINTING by Alex and Allyson Grey, a screening of TOOL‘s “Vicarious” video (as well as the ‘making of’ documentary), future CoSM news, psychedelic audiovisuals and more. Crash Mansion is located at 1024 S. Grand Ave, L.A., CA., and additional info is available at the CoSM website This is a 21 or older event.

The Chapel of Sacred Mirrors is currently raising funds to help it relocate the current gallery in New York to a better location.  If you like his art and live in LA then check it out.

Vicarious DVD Review

I received my copy of the Vicarious DVD one Tuesday, and after watching all the of the various parts of it, I felt it was about time to share my opinion with you all. If any of you want to share your thoughts on the DVD, feel free to comment below. I may well put a poll up at some point in the next few days too.

The Vicarious DVD comes in a package much the same as the 10,000 Days CD, with the two lenses designed to view the stereoscopic images within. The images supplied are all stills from the Vicarious video, and look quite nice when viewed properly. The lenses attached to my DVD seemed quite blurry though, and I got much better results with the 10,000 Days set, or by just doing the cross-eyes thing.

The first thing I watched off the DVD was the Vicarious video. As previously reported, it’s fully CGI and features significant work from Alex Grey, particular during the Net of Being sequences. I’m not going to really speculate on the themes behind the videos, but the “plot” seems to involve a strange human-like being (referred to as X in the documentary) interacting with an unusual world full of insects, dust and hovering tentacled eye balls, all of which may or may not have some kind of symbiotic link. Eventually, this being somehow looks into itself and sees the Net of Being. All par for the course on a Tool video guess. Personally I’m usually more interested in the effects than the actual story.

The CGI work is generally pretty good, though my inital thoughts were that it was a little inconsistent throughout. Some parts of the video seem quite detailed and smooth, while others seem a little jerky, and just not a well animated as the rest. The jerkiness is explained away in the documentary are part of Adam’s concept, but I can’t help but think that what were looking at is some of the old animation that Adam was rumoured to be unhappy with, with the newer work done by Hydraulx. For example the parts where the glass blocks shatter seem quite low quality. Perhaps it’s meant to be like this. I not sure, but it detracted from the video somewhat for me.

The music itself is extended as advertised, but merely with some ambient noise produced by Lustmord. Don’t expect to hear another Vicarious verse at all!

Next up was the commentry. I loved the commentry on the Schism and Parabola DVD’s. They cracked me up the first time, and I still get a laugh out of them whenever I happen to watch it. David Cross is a comedian I know very little about, and unfortunately this commentry gives me no reason to bother finding out more. I fought the urge to skip both tracks about 2 minutes in, but listened to the whole thing just for the benefit of the review. It didn’t get much better. Someone please direct me to something good by this guy, cause the commentry doesn’t do it for me. I also disliked the fact that the musical track was completely muted. I would have like to have heard the music faintly in the background while David commented.

The Documentary on the video was actually the part of the DVD I looked forward to the most. This 40 minute film features comments from many key members of the Vicarious video team, including Alex Grey, Chet Zar, Kevin Willis and many members of the Hydraulx team. It was quite interesting to hear them talk about what went into the video, and in some cases what has gone into past ones. The documentary features photos from not only the Vicarious development, but also that of previous videos. I quite enjoyed watching it, but felt that it would have benefited from Adam talking about it as well, but I guess that’s not really the way Tool operate.

Also included is a short COSM tour. Only running for about 6 minutes, it shows some of the interior of the complex while Alex Grey talks about what goes on there, as well as some of the impact of the Tool fans that visit.

Finally a set of story boards from both Alex and Adam, outlining some of the inital plans for the video. This is pretty short and sweet and there’s not really much more I can say about that part.

Overall, I was pretty happy with the package. The video itself I’d rate as one of the better Tool videos, but not as good as Parabola or Aenima. For the price of the DVD, I thought it was pretty good value for money, much better than the frustratingly seperate Schism/Parabola DVDs. Here’s hoping a future DVD (The Pot perhaps) has similarly good features, and hopefully some better commentry.

Entheologue With Alex Grey

On December 21st at the Chapel of Sacred Mirrors, Alex Grey will be presenting a special  screening of Vicarious as well as a documentary of the making of the video.  Once again the Vicarious Video is a collaboration between Tool and Alex Grey, and I know there’s a lot of us out there very interested in the results.

The session costs $25, and this includes an autographed copy of the DVD.  Sounds like good value to me!  Visit the COSM website for more details

Vicarious Video Details

Since the truth is now out there, I’ll reveal what I know about the Vicarious video.  It’s not much really.  Here’s a copy of the letter I was forwarded over a week ago now, and sworn to secrecy:

Hello,

It’s with great excitement that we announce Tool’s long-awaited “Vicarious” DVD, featuring the unreleased video “Vicarious” and other content, will be released December 18 2007.

As always with Tool, exact packaging details are hush-hush, but if you look at “10,000 Days” packaging you won’t be too far off.

Due to this special packaging, the DVD package in its entirety will be manufactured here in the U.S. for the World . Parts for local manufacture will not be available. This DVD will be manufactured in NTSC only, which we’re told is now playable on virtually all players worldwide.

Product details are below…
Catalogue#:               82876878169
Format:                   NTSC DVD
Finished good unit cost:      US$2.50 excluding freight
U.S. retail price:           US$12.98

To ensure we have enough stock for your orders we need an estimation of your initial order and 30, 60, 90 day stock needs. We recommend your initial order covers the first 3 months of this release, not only due to strong consumer demand but also lengthy manufacturing times and expected unit cost increases on smaller worldwide reorders.

Please submit your estimates to me by Tuesday October 16. Official orders will be requested through normal production channels at a later date, we just need an accurate estimate right now to get the ball rolling.

Tool continue their massive two year tour with dates in the U.S. and Canada through December. Maynard James Keenan’s alter-ego project, Puscifer, is out October 30. For those wishing to advertise the “Vicarious” DVD prerelease, a gentle reminder that Tool and Puscifer cannot be marketed together. This restriction includes an inability to tag the Tool DVD release on Puscifer advertising – meaning I don’t want to see an ad for a Vicarious Vagina!

Also, in Alex Greys latest newsletter:

Adam Jones, the lead guitar and filmmaker of TOOL has been working with Alex Grey on Vicarious, the first music video from TOOL’s 10,000 Days album. Scheduled for release shortly before Christmas 2007, the video features Jone’s signature surreal and dark dream vision blended with Grey’s glimpses into a brighter world. Stay tuned for release dates and pre-release screenings.

Looking forward to hearing more details about the release.

For Sale: Hope and Fear

According to the latest CoSM newsletter, Alex Grey is auctioning his works Hope and Fear to raise money for the purchase or permanant land for the Chapel of Sacred Mirrors.  The paintings were recently displayed at the Burning Man Festival.  Personally I don’t think it’s Alex Grey’s best work by a long shot, but if you’re a die-hard and have a big enough wall, then I’m sure it’d be very cool.

The auction is on Ebay and will close at 10am on Sunday the 29th of July.  It looks like they’ll sell for quite a large amount of money!

Hope and Fear

Pre Sales, Italia, COSM

According to Toolband/Army Pre-Sales for several newly announced Tool shows are happening on Friday the 20th of April. Tickets then go on sale publically the next day.

In other touring news, Tool are also playing with Nine Inch Nails at the Independant Days Festival in Italy this September. Thanks to Jurden and Mattia for the tip there.

Finally, it looks like Alex Grey is visiting Italy later this year. Alex and Allyson will be visiting the Damanhur. If you’re a fan and would like to see him then look for details on the COSM site. Thanks again to Mattia.

Alex Grey Painting on Ebay

Blair on Toolband/Army tells us that there’s a Tool inspired Alex Grey painting on Ebay at the moment. According to Ebay Pentacost was painted by Alex following a Tool concert on May 19th, 2006. If you have a wallet that desparately needs a hole burnt in it (bidding is currently at US$2,125) then head over to Ebay to make your bid.
