Sydney traditionally sells out pretty quick, so if you’re planning on getting a ticket, plan to be online at midnight to do so.  I wouldn’t be surprised if tickets sell out by the time the average Tool fan wakes up.  Considering that the Sydney BDO is mid-week (on Australia Day) I wouldn’t be banking on a second show being announced.

For this years event, Sydney, Melbourne and Gold Coast Big Day Outs sold out pretty quick, and I don’t think Adelaide and Perth weren’t far behind.  As I said, if you’re planning on going, don’t leave it – buy your ticket as they go on sale.

Still no news on any side shows.  I think that there will be some, but don’t expect them to be announced until a week or so after festival tickets go on sale.

Justin talks about the new album

Si emailed me today an interview that Justin has done recently with the New Zealand Herald. The article itself is in regards to their appearance on the Big Day Out Festival, but Justin drops several hints about the new album:

“But we all come up with stuff on our own, and probably for the first six months we just share our ideas with each other, spending hours dithering around. So it really is a big kind of jam session.”

And all he can say about the new album, which might be ready by the end of next year (“You’ll have to be patient”), is that “it’s going to be exceptional”.

More fluff in that article than actual content, but well worth a read…

Blair confirms Big Day Out, no news on sideshows

In a short and to the point post on Toolband Blair confirmed the Big Day Out dates for Tool, however has made no mention of any side shows:

BIG DAY OUT FESTIVAL DATES

Jan 21 – Auckland
Jan 23 – Gold Coast
Jan 26 – Sydney
Jan 30 – Melbourne
Feb 4 – Adelaide
Feb 6 – Perth

I still expect sideshow to be announced, the question is when.  As soon as I know you’ll know…

The results are in….

The Big Day Out for 2011 have been announced and Tool are officially headlining the Big Day Out in 2011!  Other acts include Rammstein, Deftones, Grinderman, Iggy & The Stooges, Andrew WK and more.  Hopefully some more details will be available soon!

Here’s the announcement video:

Update: The Big Day Out dates are as below:

  • Friday 21st January – Auckland, New Zealand
  • Sunday 23rd January – Parklands, Gold Coast (tickets on sale October 7th with ticketmaster )
  • Wednesday 26th January – Showground, Sydney (tickets on sale October 6th with ticketmaster)
  • Sunday 30th January – Flemington Racecourse, Melbourne (on sale 8th October with ticketmaster)
  • Friday 4th February – Showground, Adelaide (on sale 8th October with ticketmaster )
  • Sunday 6th February – Claremont Showground, Perth (on sale 8th October with tickmaster)

No word on side shows, though I’d be betting we’ll get some details from Blair or the Big Day Out promoters soonish.  Going on the 2007 tour you can presume there will be one each in Sydney and Melbourne, and probably nowhere else.

Update 2:  The official blurb for Tool reads as follows:

The sky will blacken, the ground will shudder, the earth will open up and BIG DAY OUT will once again tremble in the presence of the awe-inspiring TOOL. “Primal, poignant, poetic and, as always, utterly powerful” (ARTISTdirect, July 2010). Touring Down Under for the first time in four years, vocalist Maynard James Keenan, guitarist Adam Jones, drummer Danny Carey and bassist Justin Chancellor will be fresh from the studio, where they have been slowly crafting a follow-up to 2006’s 10,000 Days. From Lateralus to Stinkfist, you know the music. But, backed by a video and laser light show unlike any other, TOOL live is also “the kind of visual experience you’ll probably never have again” (CHARTattack, August 2009). Unmatched in the world of dark, heavy rock, California’s TOOL have over 20 years scorched themselves a place as “one of the best live bands in history” (ARTISTdirect). Be blinded by their light at BIG DAY OUT 2011. (ALL SHOWS)

Not sure how accurate the part about them being fresh from the studio is.  I’ve heard things that suggest they are, but if this is the case then they’re playing things very close to their chest this time round.  Interesting press release anyway!

Monday will be a good day….

…to be an A Perfect Circle fan according to Billy’s Myspace page.  Combined with a Facebook update of “Stay Tuned” we can only guess that tour dates will be announced then.  Or perhaps just some more information regarding their plans.

In other social media related news, Junior posted on Facebook just a little while ago that he’ll be working with Devo the next couple of months.  Possibly importantly for us Aussie fans he mentioned that he’ll be “Done before January. :) ”.  I’m pretty much 100% convinced now that Tool will be Big Day Outing.

Tool Big Day Out rumours ramping up…

There has been much speculation in the past few weeks, part of it from me about Tool playing the Big Day Out here in Australia and New Zealand in 2011.  Blair has made several hints towards and Australian tour in recent newsletters, and just now the Big Day Out Facebook page has just released the following clue:

One of the Big Day Out 2011 headline acts live in Los Angeles, California, USA. The other headliner doesn’t. Both are bands, neither are solo performers.

Sound like anyone we know?  LA is a big place I suppose, so it could be any number of acts, but there is plenty of things pointing to Tool being Down Under this summer.  I guess there’s also an outside chance it’s A Perfect Circle

Tool last visited Australia & NZ as part of the Big Day Out tour in 2007, and at the time promised they’d be back later that year.  Danny injured himself and the tour never happened, so perhaps this some kind of payback for us…

Mastodon Announce Big Day Out Sideshows

Mastodon, who are touring Australia and New Zealand as part of the Big Day Out festival have announced a couple of sideshows in Sydney and Melbourne:

SYDNEY – Thursday 21 January – THE ROUNDHOUSE, UNIVERSITY OF NSW
Presented by triple j & FasterLouder – Tickets: Ticketek 132 849 or www.ticketek.com.au

MELBOURNE – Thursday 28 January – THE PALACE
Presented by triple j & FasterLouder – Tickets: Ticketmaster www.ticketmaster.com.au or 136 100

Personally, I’d love to see them, but won’t be attending the BDO due to it being sold out, and the rest of the lineup being generally pretty crappy.

To Mastodon – please consider doing your own tour next time around.  I’d really like to check you out but won’t spend $150 to do so, nor will I go and see you if you’re the support act of another band I’m not so interested in seeing.

Fantomas for Big Day Out 09

Nick emailed me just a minute a go to let me know that the following Myspace page has tour dates for Fantomas in Australia/New Zealand next year including the 2009 Big Day Out:

16 Jan 2009 – Big Day Out Festival, Auckland, NZ
18 Jan 2009 – Big Day Out Festival, Gold Coast, Aus
21 Jan 2009 – TBA, Brisbane, Aus (opening for Serj Tankian)
23 Jan 2009  – Big Day Out Festival, Sydney, Aus
24 Jan 2009 – TBA, Sydney, Aus (opening for Serj Tankian)
25 Jan 2009 – TBA, Melbourne, Aus (opening for Serj Tankian)
26 Jan 2009 – Big Day Out Festival, Melbourne, Aus
30 Jan 2009 – Big Day Out Festival, Adelaide, Aus
01 Feb 2009 – Big Day Out Festival, Perth, Aus

Personally, if this does happen I’d be slightly pissed off, cause I don’t really fancy paying $130 just to see Fantomas, and the likelihood of an Adelaide sideshow are virtually nil.  If this was the case it’s likely I’d be missing out this time around.

Update: It would appear that Fantomas are definitely the support act for the Serj Tankian sideshows, so consider the Big Day Out announcement a mere formality.

Slow News Week

Not much has happened this week, so here’s a few  Tool and non-Tool related items I noticed going on.

The Puscifer store is either open, or opening very soon Jerome Arizona according to a post from Blair on Toolband.  Not doubt most of the merchandise available from the Puscifer online store can also be had there.

Daily Grail are having a donation drive at the moment, and are offering a few prizes including a print of Maynard’s Sieben artwork.  Some of you will remember that these prints have been available on Toolarmy in the past, and I imagine there’s not many left, since they’re no longer available for purchase.  Make a donation a Daily Grail to be in the running.

The Big Day Out festival lineup was announced during the week, with what I think is a pretty uninspiring lineup.  Highlights include Neil Young, Arctic Monkeys, Cog, The Prodigy and more.  I think I’ll give it a miss this year and see Nine Inch Nails at Soundwave.
