Adam in Guitar World

I had a chance to read the recent Guitar World article with Adam Jones, and it’s one of the best Tool articles I’ve read for a while.  It reveals plenty of new info and some insight into Adam’s guitar playing.  Here are some points I know most of you are interested in:

  • The first video for 10,000 Days (presumably Vicarious) will be entirely in CGI has run into some “vicious production problems”.  Basically they got screwed by the production company, and now a friend of Adam’s company is helping them complete it.  The problem is that since they’re only helping, work only happens when their schedule is clear.  Adam says all his spare time goes into it, but I wouldn’t expect to see anything until after this round of touring stops.
  • The second video (presumably The Pot) will be all stop-motion, and pre-production has started.
  • They have filmed stuff for a Live DVD, and were going to put it out but it “(didn’t) sit very well with our band”.  I guess this means they want more than just the standard live show to be released.
  • Adam is keen to do a Tool movie, but it sounds as though he’s waiting for someone to show him the money before he does.  And there’s a lot of red tape involved in movie making.
  • When Tool were approached to contribute to the Escape from LA soundtrack, they suggested rather than just giving them a song, actually do one with John Carpenter (who apparently is also a musician).  For various record label related reasons, this didn’t go ahead.  So they just gave them Sweat in the end.
  • They’ve had several stalkers, include one that Camella and Chris Graves set up and had arrested.  A Toolarmy member perhaps?
  • The project with Robert Fripp has been recorded, but there’s still the drums and arrangements to go.  Adam’s hoping to put it out as soon as possible, but like the videos I wouldn’t expect much until Tool finish touring.

Go and buy the magazine when it comes out in your part of the world!  I know I will.

November Newsletter, Adam + Guitarist

Blair posted the November Newsletter today.  Seems to be the usual ramblings, this time about his trip to San Antonio.  This is mainly in response to the cancelled show, and Blair mentions that the show will be rescheduled for the 2007 US tour.

There have been plenty of photo’s posted for Toolarmy members, today there’s one of Adam, Camella and Brian May.  Nice beard Adam, looks like those hairy guys from Mastodon are rubbing off on you.

Don’t miss the sleigh, Cam’s Picture

Blair tells us today, that if we expect to get Tool merchandise before Xmas, we had better get out orders in before the 13th of December if you’re in the US, or by the 7th of December if you’re else where. This excludes TA membership packages which I understand are shipped by Yak from an 18th century manufacturing plant in the Himalayas. Also, Blair didn’t define if he was talking about Xmas ’06 or ’07. I guess we’ll all know in about a months time.

TA Yak's in transit
TA Yaks in transit

Also, Toolarmy members can see a picture taken by Camella from the recent Tool European tour. Hopefully we’ll see some more, since that photo was nice, but no better than many I’ve seen here. We want pictures take from places where normal people can’t go, not ones from the cheap seats.

Happy Halloween, Daily Grail

There’s several new posts on Toolband/Army detailing a recent Halloween Hollywood tour conducted by Camella, Blair and co. It’s an interesting read, but if you’re looking for Tool news, go elsewhere. There’s also a couple of pictures up as well.

It was also revealed that some more Signed Lateralus Vinyl was released to celebrate Halloween. Not many were available apparently, and it seems as though they’re all gone. Well done if you managed to score one.

Finally, the latest issue of Sub Rosa magazine is out, and features an article talking about Blair‘s Crowley collection, and also talks about Danny‘s as well.

Back in Black

I arrived back home in sunny Yeppoon a few hours ago and though I’d drop you all a quick line letting you know that I’m back, and that Fourth Eye will resume it’s normal programming tomorrow.  That’s not to say Charred Remains did a bad job, in fact it looks like he’s done a pretty damn good one….

The honeymoon was awesome!  Jo and I saw plenty of amazing animals in San Diego, were blinded by the lights in Vegas, scaled Hoover Dam, checked out Elton John, drove on the wrong side of the road, saw the Hollywood sign, purchased cheap booze, perfume and guitar pedals, and much much more.  I might share a few photos and some other details later.

In other news, it looks like Butcher are looking for a new bass player.  According to Camella’s Myspace site:

We are seeking a new bass player to write, record and play live with. If you love heavy music, and are looking for a project to pour your guts into, check out Butcher (http://myspace.com/butcherband) e-mail a demo of your music to: butcher@butcherband.com

Scott will always be heart and soul Butcher, and will continue to work with us in a limited capacity. Scott could not continue balancing a 90 mile drive to and from practice.

I guess the implication there is that you must be available for rehersal frequently, and presumeably either live in LA or don’t mind travelling.

Tickets to the Sydney show are still available, though they’re all pretty much on the side of the stage (I checked less that 1/2 an hour ago).  Having sat in one of these before, I gotta say they aren’t as bad as they seem, and sure beats not being there.  Get in quick!

Times Leader speaks with Justin

Times Leader in Pennsylvania speak with Justin ahead of the coming Tool show at Wachovia Arena. Justin talks about writing 10,000 Days in a somewhat uninspired article.

In other news, there’s more exclusive pictures from Camella up Toolarmy, mainly of the band members but one interesting one of a Tool fan with the Aenima Eye’s tattoeed on his shoulders.

Pictures, Pictures, Pictures…

Toolarmy members have been treated to yet another exclusive, this time Blair has posted several pictures of Tool performing live recently. They’re all taken by Camella, and are all excellent pictures. Non-TA members will have to take their chances on Google…

Speaking of pictures, J has sent me a link of a collection of photo’s he took at a recent Tool show. Once again there’s some damn fine ones there, as well as a few that suggest their may be something being drawn in the air buy the lasers. Or is it just all The Pot?

Finally, entries will be closing in the Fourth Eye logo competition soon. If you want to enter your work of art, make sure you get it to me by this Saturday, otherwise it may not make the cut.

I’ll just go right into it. ‘ Not feeling very artsy right now.

ISIS:

I wanted to like Isis, I really did, but after giving them the chance I trust they deserved (listening to their first two songs–couldn’t tell you what they were), I found that I just wasn’t into
it. It’s hard to feel a band on a spiritual level while their playing live, like Isis want, when you don’t know what the songs are about, or even what they’re called. So to me, in that moment, it just sounded like boring drone metal.

But here’s a recap anyways:

Isis walked out, instruments in hand, while receiving a very warm reception from the crowd, and just went right into playing. They all stood on the spot, with Aaron doing the most head banging/grooving. His growling screamo vocals sounded great, if that says anything.  They played on the stage–all right up front, close to the edge–while the sole green and purple lighting alternated boringly (theperfectdrugtheperfectdrugtheperfectdrug). Not their fault, obviously, being the opening act. But when QOTSA opened for NIN, THEY had a great set-up (And may I say, while I’m not that into them, they have been the best opening act I’ve seen thus far. And the contestants include TMV). But I heard some people around me commenting on how they had never heard of Isis, but really like the performance; “It’s so laid back… relaxing…”

Aaron: “Thank-you! We’re Isis.”

TOOL:

Now, while the stage set up was wretched, the white-everything projector-like floor really made the Band stand out. No hiding in the shadows for those guys!

Maynard removes his cowboy hat and does a wing-armed bow. “Hello Edmonton” (Alberta, Canada, if anyone’s wondering).
SPOILER (lol): and dood did we have a vocal Maynard tonight!

They go right into Stinkfist. Which sounded great! (matter of opinion… overheard people afterward talking about the crap sound, but it sounded very Toolish to me). Interspaced somewhere in the song was Adam’s new (to me?) soaring, distorted, riffing solo. Halfway through that solo Danny comes in with his great and diversified drumming skills, making for a protean duettino. Honestly, this song was just so great within the set.

Maynard: “President Bush says to say hi.”
Crowd: *Boooooooo*
Maynard: “What? Did I fuck your girlfriend or something?”
Falsetto time! (And this, will NOT, be the only time…)
This song (The Pot) sounds great live, and it’s very high energy. Justin KILLS it. I thought I liked him better with short hair, but not on this track! Justin was rocking out harder than I’ve ever seen. And his fingers were fucking everywhere, not that I play bass. It sounded just like it does on the CD, except you could feel the bass brown-noting your 4 degrees warmer. Great.

Forty Six & 2. Not much to say about the song. But man was I dancing like an asshole.

Maynard: “Want some more?”
Jambi sounds fucking DEADLY live. And Maynard gets his macho on during. Hands around dinner-plate-belt-buckle, He’s limboing Adam’s decapitating Iambic meter, fucking it reserve cowgirl even. You cannot wait to see this song live!

A much longer intro to Schism, and I don’t even know what song they’re playing. But once the song starts where it does on the CD, I’m dancing like a fucking retard again. And get this – Maynard did more falsetto! Throughout most of the whole! He sounded like a fucking chipmunk! But it didn’t degenerate the song AT ALL. Great way to spice things up. There is beauty in
the dissonance.

ROSETTA STONED IS A CYNOSURE. Don’t even know what that means? remember to write it down. This was the closest thing to an epic that there was on the setlist, and had it not lyrically been from the perspective of a flibbertigibbet, I WOULD consider it epic. I’m pretty sure the stuff getting projected was the recent work of Blair and Camella, as there was a naked guy running away from off-screen things in a desert somewhere, presumably out side Area 51. He looked CG at moments though… but I’m not sure. I haven’t seen Tool CG animations look that good before. CYNOSURE!

And God said, let them be sober. And the boys vociferated: why can’t we not be? Best supererogative moment of the concert: more guitar and drum solo/duettino! Though this time the guitar was 10x better! Adam truly is a god of precariously thriving distortion. This sounded so fresh to me. Loved it.

Maynard: “We have something cool called a time machine. Want to step inside with us?”
Opiate. VERY welcome surprise. Not much to say, I mean, it’s Opiate. Sounded awful (meaning reverential, look it up!).

Maynard: “I wanna tell you a story… but I’m not sure which to tell…”
“Oh, here’s one: How do you get a dog to stop humping you leg? Pick it up and suck its dick. …I’m not even joking.”
“Sorry about our president.” [Something about storm troopers... and buying the U.S. while our dollar is high, before they invade us for our oil.]
“And again, sorry about our president. I thought leaving that flaming pile of dog shit on his porch would help him get the hint. But I guess not. …I’m still on probation.”

Lateralus is such a classic. I’ll never get tired of the song. This is when they busted out the laser-floyd. No alterations, it didn’t need any.

Vicarious sounds and -feels- great live. No Vicarious video clips.
Fittingly, the projections were of T.V. snow. Nothing else to say about it, the song sounds just how you think it would.

Maynard: “Peace out.”

And they finish up with Aenima. It’s an anthem. I guarantee I spit all over the fucker in front me while singing along.

From the mouth of Blair?

everlastingpmpkn sent me an email today, saying that he had a chance to catch up with Blair at the recent Volto gig.  Here’s what he had to say:

Spoke to Blair, and he said that the whole secret listening session in 4
different locations across the globe was “complete bullshit” and that he
doesn’t know where that rumor came from.

If Blair’s own words aren’t enough…well here’s some more info: 4 band
members at each listening session across the globe? Considering Danny Carey
was playing with Volto in Hollywood tonite, that mean’s he’s the LA guy
rite? Well, I saw Adam Jones there tonite too (with Camella)…Unless Adam is
catching a flight on a Concorde jet tomorrow morning, he ain’t gonna be at
some listening session in New York, London, or Sydney. AGAIN, COMPLETE
BULLSHIT RUMOR. If you don’t believe that I saw Adam, go read Blair’s post a
couple days ago…says that Adam was editing in San Diego. So AT LEAST Danny
and Adam are in LA, likely all band members as well.

Chatted with Blair some more and he said that everything he has posted on
Toolband is the truth, and he swore on it. Said that this is Tool’s best
record they’ve ever done, by far. And that all the titles will make sense
once we have the CD in our hand. Also asked Blair if he was planning on an
April Fool’s Day joke. He said that Maynard was behind all that stuff last
year, and that he has never had anything to do with any April Fool’s Joke,
ever. Personally, he doesn’t like April Fool’s. Straight from the horse’s
mouth.

Blair is a pretty cool guy, and considering he was kind’ve drunk, I
should’ve tried to get some more information out of him…

First Single – Visceral?

Ok, this is just some more speculation, based on a post by nocode4444 on Toolarmy, but he’s suggested a rumour that the first single will be called Visceral and that a possible picture from the video was posted on Camella’s Myspace site by Adam.  The picture has since been recognised as from else where, but considering the first single may be “P or V” as Obelisong hinted in the January Newsletter, not to mention Maynard saying this several times in the Crowleymas chat, it seems like there’s some potential in this rumour….
