Adam in Australian Guitar

As I do every month, I picked up latest edition of Australian Guitar magazine.  Like Rolling Stone they’ve also run a Big Day Out feature, this time running a much better interview with Adam.  The interview is really quite good, and for guitar geeks like me talks about his gear in a bit more detail.  Here’s a few highlights.

On the Big Day Out:

AG: How does playing a festival like the Big Day Out compare to playing an arena or theatre show for the band?

AJ: It’s a whole different kind of vibe, as people are there to see and hear a bunch of different bands.  You don’t have a lot of time between the bands to really pump in what you can do like in a more intimate and controlled setting such as an arena or a indoor venue, but it’s all good though.  I think we have a really good show and good special effects so people will love it.

On song writing and alternate tunings:

AG: When it comes to the experimental aspect of Tool, do you tend to explore different tunings or play around with different effect pedals in order to come up with the soundscapes you hear in your head?

AJ: Yeah, but tastefully, it’s not just like “Hey, here’s a new tuning”.  It kind of depends on what the song needs.  We wrote a couple of songs that came from working on riffs with a B/E tuning.  Though the guitar is in the normal 440 tuning, the tuning itself actually sounds really low, as the E string is tuned to B, while the A string is tuned to E, with the rest of the strings remaining in standard tuning.  it’s like and octave and a low kind of harmony…like a seventh.  Anyway, they didn’t really pan out, but I think it will pan out on the next record.

On his guitar rig:

AG: When it comes to the stage, what is your gear set-up like?

AJ: It’s basically just 3 amps, a Marshall Super Bass head and two Diezel VH4s and three cabinets and a Leslie.  And that is it.  It’s what I’ve always had.  One amp is kind of the master, while the other two fill in what the master’s not getting.  Guitar-wise, I use two silverburst Les Paul Custom guitars.  One is used as a back-up, though I hardly ever use it.  Sometime though, if I’m using a different tuning like a B tuning or the B/E tuning, I’ll have another guitar too so I don’t have to change the tuning..  I can just grab the guitar and it’s all tuned and ready to go and intonated.

Ok, that’s as much as I willing to type up for the moment, and don’t bother asking for scans since I won’t do it.  Good to hear that they’re already thinking about the next album, though i do remember talk around Lateralus time of them not having a long gap between releases….

Maynard in Aussie Rolling Stone, BDO Tickets Update

I was wandering through the newsagent yesterday and noticed that the Australian Edition of Rolling Stone magazine has a feature this month on bands touring Australia this summer.  There was a short interview with Maynard there which really isn’t worth purchasing the magazine for.

It really doesn’t cover anything we haven’t already read about in previous interviews.  It does mention that Maynard is hoping to visit the Magill Estate in Adelaide and some of Perth’s wineries while on tour.

Just a quick word about the Big Day Out tickets I recieved as part of the ballot.  Both of these tickets have been purchased by my friends here in Yeppoon, so sadly none of them will be available to Fourtheye Members.

Drummers Digest speaks to Danny

Drummers Digest have posted an interview with Danny. Not a bad interview, though it really doesn’t reveal much we don’t already know either:

Danny: “The record companies are in trouble, it’s getting harder and harder to sell records. That was why we tried really hard to come up with a cool package that can’t be downloaded, that’s like a piece of art that people want to hold in their hands. So that was kind of the philosophy about the package for 10,000 Days.”

He also mentions that making a type of bird extinct to create his latest drumkit was a joke, and that he’s looking to record with Pigmy Love Circus again in the next year.

DC on the Rock Show, Tool Tickets

Danny Carey and Brann Dailor from Mastodon took over the BBC Rock Show the other night, and it show is currently available for streaming on the website.  Apparently this will only be available for the next week.  Not really an interview as such, more the guys discussing drumming and playing a few tracks.  Here’s what they picked:

  • Mahavishnu Orchestra – ‘Meeting Of The Spirits’ (Sony)
  • Isis – ‘ Holy Tears’ (Ipecac)
  • Genesis – ‘In The Cage’ (Atlantic)
  • Led Zeppelin – ‘The Wanton Song’ (Warner)
  • Mastodon – ‘Hearts Alive’ (Warners)

I got an email from Mark the other day, who is interested in swapping his Sydney Tool show tickets (Silver seated) for Gold Coast Big Day Out Tickets.  If you’re interested, then let me know and I’ll put you in touch.

Speaking of tickets, if any of you have tickets for the Big Day Outs, or either of the Tool shows, and are looking to offload them, then feel free to let me know, as I’m always happy to advertise them on Fourtheye.  The only condition is that the tickets are sold at face value.

Finally, for those of you thinking of buying Big Day Out tickets from Ebay, then be aware that Big Day Out organisers are invalidating tickets purchased from the site (presuming ticket numbers can be tracked down).  According to this article, Ebay will be suing the Big Day Out organisers, but in the meantime – be careful!

Tool in Visions

XtotheY of Toolnavy posted last night that Tool are featured in the latest edition of the German magazine Visions.  No transcript of the interview was made available, but it was a pretty stock standard interview except for the following points:

  • The Vicarious video will be entirely computer generated, which is why there have been delays.
  • Adam is yet to see the video for himself
  • Maynard justified the current Tool ticket prices by saying they offer much more value than Korn.

Personally, I don’t think ticket prices are that outrageous.

Tour News, Coming Interviews, Mastodon Videos, Salival Request

Casi emailed me today, telling me that he received and email for Blair a few days ago, confirming that Tool will be touring the Gulf Coast region on their next US tour.  Hopefully those of you who missed out last time will be able to catch them next year.

Toolshed mentioned that Danny and Brann Dailor of Mastodon will appear on this Tuesday’s episode of The Radio Rockshow.

Speaking of Mastodon, they’ve released Episode 1 of a series of videos recorded while on tour with Tool in Europe.  No real mention of Tool aside from the upcoming interview, so probably not worth checking out unless you’re a die hard Mastodon fan.

Finally I’ve had a request from a Fourtheye reader who is looking to purchase a copy of Salival, presumably DVD though it wasn’t specified.  If you have a copy you’d like to get rid of, then email me and I’ll put you in touch.

Tool on BBC 6 Music

According to Blabbermouth, Tool will be appearing on the Rock Show with Iron Maiden’s Bruce Dickinson on Saturday December 9.  The show is broadcast via the internet on BBC.co.uk and runs between 9:00pm and 12:00am.  Now word on whether this will be an interview, or some kind of live performance, though given Tool’s usual reluctance to be recorded live, I’d suggest it’ll be the former.

Times Leader speaks with Justin

Times Leader in Pennsylvania speak with Justin ahead of the coming Tool show at Wachovia Arena. Justin talks about writing 10,000 Days in a somewhat uninspired article.

In other news, there’s more exclusive pictures from Camella up Toolarmy, mainly of the band members but one interesting one of a Tool fan with the Aenima Eye’s tattoeed on his shoulders.
