Adam suggests new Tool album recording in March

Not to be outdone by Maynard, Adam posted on Instagram today following a visit to the Loft by Sebastian Bach (formerly of Skid Row) and King Buzzo.  In his post he suggests that Tool could kick off recording in March.  It’ll be a tight schedule though, with both Tool and A Perfect Circle having tour dates in April/May this year.

Update: Adam has updating the Instagram post to suggest March instead of April as kicking off recording.

~ Huge fun & honor performing all the new tunes for Guinea pigs Sebastian & #KingBuzz b4 the recording starts in April. Still instrumentals with Mjk in town working on killer lyrics. Exciting! ————————–Repost from @sebastianbach @TopRankRepost #TopRankRepost How lucky am I? Spent yesterday getting my face melted by 3/4 of TOOL at the TOOL headquarters / rehearsal Studio. My very own private Tool show just missing the vocals! This is not just your average simple rock and roll music. This is progressive metal at its most atmospheric and right when you get into a groovy trance you get beat over the head with riffs so heavy it feels like a TOOL. Some tunes were so pummelling it felt like I was getting a deep tissue massage! in fact they could call the record that. No song was shorter than 7 minutes and some were 20 minutes long! Just my idea of how to spend the perfect day! Thank you so much to my great friend Adam Jones and Justin Chancellor on bass for your hospitality! Danny Carey you are one of the most talented drummers I have ever seen in my life and such a nice fun dude! You are all inspirations to me & thank you so much for the great preview! I can only Imagine what the Majestic vocals of Maynard James Keenan would sound like on top of this music. If it’s as delicious as his wine is, then I am buying this record for sure! 🎛🔈🍷cheers guys ! It was also great to see Buzz Osbourne the guitar player for The Melvins, who I last saw backstage in Seattle (I think) when we were drinking beers with Chris Cornell decades ago. Always good to see someone still doing great so many years down the line! #Melvins #Tool #MathRock #Rehearsal #rock #survivors

So maybe I spoke a little too soon when I ruled out 2018 for a new Tool album.  I’m still on the skeptical I’ll believe it when I see it side of the fence, but good to see some solid progress reports from the guys.

Adam & Buzz at Grumpys

Mark got along to Grumpys bar the other night to be served drinks by Adam from Tool and Buzz from the Melvins.  He had this to say about the event:

They were real nice, both Adam and Buzzo allowed fans to take pictures with them. Adam was selling some of his prints for around $400.00 a piece. They had to cut the bartending gig short due to the fact we had a terrible snowstorm that night and they had to get back over to the other Grumpys for a Melvins show that was really good but I was hoping that Adam would have jumped on stage, but he didn’t. Oh, and no juicy new TOOL news to divulge, I was too star struck to ask questions.

Sounds like fun Mark.  He also sent me a few pictures for you guys to enjoy!

AJ Artwork For Sale, Melvins Oz Gigs

According to a post from Blair on Toolband/Army, a limited amount of original Adam Jones artpieces will be sold at the appearances at Grumpy‘s Bar.

While we’re talking about the Melvins, I heard on the Melvins Forum that any Melvins gigs in Australia next month will be “secret” shows and not part of an official tour. It also won’t include Big Business, so I’d guess maybe two shows, one in Sydney and one in Melbourne with Trevor Dunn on bass.

Adam and Buzz serving drinks at Grumpys

I stumbled across an article today on decider.com that suggests that Adam and Buzz from the Melvins will be serving drinks at Grumpys (a couple of bars owned by AmRep founder Tom Hazelmyer).  They will be at the Roseville bar on Saturday the 13th of December, and then Sunday the 14th at the Minneapolis bar.

So all you Tool fans in the area, get along, have a beer and ask Adam how The Pot video and/or the new album is coming.  Also tell Buzz to make sure The Melvins come to Adelaide!

Buzz interview, Signed wine for sale

A couple of little things today, Shinji from the French Tool website Salival has posted an interview he did with Buzz from the Melvins.  Pictures from their recent show there can be found here.

Also, George emailed me a link to a Craigslist/Ebay auction for an autographed bottle of wine, singed by Maynard and Eric.  According to the post Maynard rarely signs stuff.  I guess he wasn’t aware of the dozen or so signing sessions Maynard is attending at the Whole Food Markets.  Bidding starts at US$49.

Guitar Hero 4 Confirmed

Ronnie sent me an email today pointing me to Alan Joneswebsite (Adam‘s brother). On the Bits page it mentions:

Doesn’t all good summer fun begin with some yard work? Doing some of that… but I did have some real fun in LA on my last trip. After getting all of my work done and closing a deal for Tool (GH4) I spent the last day of my trip in Catalina which is a gorgeous little island off the coast. The ferry ride is about an hour. I made some new friends with a Texas Ranger and his wife – Justin and Courtnie Chambers – and spent the day with Adam, Camella, Rynne, and Aaron Harris of the band Isis.

From that statement I’d now consider this a done deal, and probably one of the happenings Blair has mentioned in the last few months.

The rest of the article is well worth reading too. It confirms a couple of things Blair mentioned recently and talks about a golf day with Danny and King Buzzo.

King Buzzo solo acoustic tour hits Australia

Excellent news for Melvins fans this morning, with King Buzzo announcing he’s bringing his acoustic live show to Australia for a series of dates in August. From Frontier Touring:

Frontier Touring is thrilled to announce that rock’n’roll royalty Buzz Osborne, King Buzzo is headed to Australia with a ten-date solo acoustic tour of Australia this August!

With a career spanning 31 years, 30 albums, and over 2,000 live performances, this tour marks the first time that the monarch of metal has performed acoustically in such a unique and intimate setting.

Buzz is the front man & founding member of Melvins, whose dark and sludgy sound influenced the works of many acclaimed grunge and metal bands including Nirvana, Soundgarden, Green River and in many ways nurtured the Seattle music scene itself.

Last year the band released their nineteenth studio album Tres Cabrones (out now through Ipecac Recordings), a psychedelic hard-rock gem that saw original drummer Mike Dillard re-join Buzz and Dale Crover for a collection of tracks that playfully referenced both the punk aesthetic of the band’s roots and their current layered and exploratory sound… all done with a pierced tongue planted firmly in cheek.

Buzz also picked up the guitar to join Mike Patton, Dave Lombardo and Trevor Dunn in experimental metal supergroup Fantômas, a band that allowed each member the creative freedom to explore their many influences – both in and outside of music.

Their debut and subsequent releases received heavy praise for their innovation – second album The Directors Cut (out now through Ipecac Recordings) climbed to #18 on the ARIA Albums Chart and scored rave reviews from NME, Pitchfork and Drowned In Sound who called it “a genre breaking, irreverent album that bridges everything from metal, jazz, sludgecore, grunge, and abstract electronica… one of the most challenging, and rewarding albums of the year”.

King Buzzo’s solo and acoustic debut This Machine Kills Artists (out May 30 through Ipecac Recordings, listen to ‘Instrument Of God’ here) has actually been a long time coming – Buzz wrote a vast majority of the Melvins’ songs originally on acoustic guitar before transferring to electric – “What I’m doing, it’s not folk music, it’s not heavy metal. It’s ‘molk,’ how ’bout that?”

Across seventeen tracks, This Machine Kills Artists uses absolutely no electric guitars, amplifiers or direct boxes, offering a surprising new side to the grunge progenitor and a rawness that spotlights his skill as a songwriter. Rolling Stone premiered track ‘Dark Brown Teeth’ (listen here), remarking that it “still has the doomy, ill-angled, Beefheartian edge his band is renowned for”.

‘‘THIS MACHINE KILLS ARTISTS’ CONTINUES OSBORNE’S APPROACH OF REDEFINING AND SUBVERTING WHATEVER MUSICAL GENRE HE DEEMS FIT. THIS ARTIST FEELS VIBRANT AND UNSHACKLED, MACHINES BE DAMNED’– SMELLS LIKE INFINITE SADNESS
After an extensive 38-show tour of the United States, King Buzzo will now bring This Machine Kills Artists to Australian audiences for the first time with a series of shows that are guaranteed to bring the house down.

Adelaide, Geelong, Melbourne, Newcastle, Sydney, Wollongong, Canberra, Brisbane and Perth are all set firmly within Buzz’s sights – make certain you’re there for this rare opportunity to see a metal powerhouse like you’ve never seen him before.

TOUR DATES

Wednesday 13 August Adelaide | Enigma Bar (18+)
Thursday 14 August Geelong | Barwon Club (18+)
Friday 15 August Melbourne | Ding Dong Lounge (18+)
Wednesday 20 August Newcastle | The Small Ballroom (18+)

Friday 22 August Wollongong | Anita’s Theatre (18+)

Pre-sales are happening on the 26th of March, so make sure you register for them. The venues look like small ones, so expect tickets to move reasonably quickly, especially in Sydney and Melbourne.

King Buzzo will release his new album This Machine Kills Artists on June 3rd.

Adam Jones and King Buzzo project emerges

Found in a toilet at the recent show in Houston was a CD claiming to be from an Adam Jones and King Buzzo project called Bleeder. It seems to be related to the Instagram video Adam posted back in February.

Here’s what is published on the Tool Army Members Facebook page (thanks to Kat for the tip):

This little gem was found in a bathroom at Toyota Centre Houston at the Tool concert.

The Silver.
The ‘Y’ Incision’, part of the Cal McDonald series, is experimenting with an audio accompaniment to enhance the reading experience. Jones will be composing and producing, whilst it’s up to Buzzo to perform the musical segments. Bloody Pulp Books are publishing the effort.

It comes with a photo of the CD as well:

And a clip of the track can be found on Youtube:

It was King Buzzo’s 50th birthday on the 25th of March, so could be a birthday present of sorts…
