Christophe Muller has collected another great Tool-related interview, this time with 3D artist Meats Meier. He discusses a range of subjects, including his work with Tool, Puscifer and much more:
How did it come for you to work with Tool ?
I just got an email from Adam Jones one day asking if I’d be interested to work on the stereoscopic cover artwork for the 10,000 Days album art. Of course, I was extremely interested, I was always a big Tool fan, and obviously a big fan of stereoscopic art (as well as holographic, anaglyph, and basically anything 3D). The CD even won a Grammy for "Best Packaging" that year. Can you relate the way you build the artwork for 10,000 Days and the animations for the concerts ?
The characters and objects are more or less sculpted inside of the computer using programs like Maya and Zbrush. I can paint them and give them surfaces that mimic real world objects like metal, skin or anything I can dream up. I insert "bones" into the characters, and then can puppet them and animate them the way I want them to move. The real magic happens when I hand over my finished animations to Breckenridge Haggerty (the video guy for Tool), and he re-mixes them to match the music as it’s being played. I’m always blown away by what he can do, and the level that he can bring to my work.
Well worth checking out…
Meats Meier’s new video fro the Puscifer track The Mission is now streaming on Shockhound….
Maynard announced on Twitter overnight that there will be pre-sales for the Puscifer gigs via Ticketmaster. So far the link he provided only confirms a Vegas Pre-Sale, but I expect there will be more.
Also, enjoy this promo video by Meats Meier featuring Maynard’s cat. The one from Mantra perhaps?
I cam across an interesting Blog Post on Meats Meier’s Myspace account, where he talks about some of the animations he did for Tool and their live shows. Brief, but worth reading (and watching).
Meats Meier has posted some cool pics of the recent LA Puscifer gig on his webpage. Check them out!
Mahamundra from Toolarmy pointed out a quote from the recent Guitar World interview with Adam Jones, and a recent tweet from Meats Meier as having something in common….
Adam Jones: We’re working on ‘The Pot’ but Ive been really lazy lately[Laughs]. The setup for it is a-lot more epic, so its actually good that we’ve been able to have more time. Its going to be all stop motion and in 3D. We’re doing it so that we can hopefully have it shown in the theater. A-lot more theaters are going digital and those projectors can do 3D. We have a *consultant who worked with us on the 3D packaging for 10,000 Days, and he was telling me that in 10 to 20 years you wont need goggles for 3D, you’ll go to the movie theater and everything will look 3D. Its almost holographic. Its really exciting. Sorry, gimme a chance to nerd out and I will [Laughs]
And from Meats:
I’m preparing for my huge meeting with TOOL tomorrow afternoon. Big things brewing…gulp
If anyone happens to have a copy of that interview with Adam Jones – let me know. I’m yet to see the magazine surface here in Australia. Thanks all who responded – I now have a copy
According to a new paste on the Puscifer Myspace page, a physical Puscifer Store will be opening soon in Jerome, Arizona:
Hopefully by Oct 1st, we’ll be able to say it’s official, THE 1ST EVER Puscifer store will be opening. Ground Zero is Jerome, Arizona. It’s a small space above Jerome Tattoo, and across from Puffin Stuff in the Verde Apartment Complex. We’re still in the painting and renovation stage. As always things take a little longer and cost twice what you might expect, but we’re making headway.
He also mentions that there’s a Mamma Sed video on it’s way. No word on whether it’s another Meats Meier effort.
