More Guitar Lessons with Buzz

King Buzzo from the Melvins has recorded another interview/guitar lesson with MetalKult.  As usual it’s a great interview, especially if you dig Buzz’s sense of humour.  He also dishes out advice on how to play Houdini tracks Honeybucket and Hooch.

Rumour has it on the Melvins BBS that The Melvins could be touring with Down in the US later this year.

Lustmord discusses Tool, Melvins

isdfx from Toolarmy pointed me towards an interesting interview with Lustmord on All Things That Rock.  Here’s an excerpt:

(Lustmord) Adam Jones is another good example of not so much the instruments he plays, but the person himself and the attitude and the aesthetic he brings to it.

We had talked about him maybe not using a guitar because he makes great electronic music and really interesting experimental work outside of what he’s known for. We’re both big Kraftwerk fans and we share interests in things like Aphex Twin, Autechre etc. so it didn’t have to be him playing guitar.

There’s also the fact that he’s the guitarist from Tool and anything he plays is going to have that Tool sound. We didn’t want it to sound like that. Not that there’s anything wrong with sounding like Tool, he does that really well, but if you’re collaborating with people you try to do something different.

Of course, the obvious thing would have been to make it sound exactly like Tool and sell a shit load of records. But Tool already exists and it’s more interesting to try something different.

Very interesting article about Lustmord and his work.

Adam Jones designs Melvins poster

Adam has designed one of the posters for a series of gigs by the Melvins this year celebrating their 25th anniversary.  My understanding is that these posters may be available for sale at these shows.  Other posters have been designed by the likes of Jeff Ament from Pearl Jam.

The 25th Anniversary shows are:

  • May 15, 2009 – New York, NY – Webster Hall
  • May 16, 2009 – Boston, MA – Paradise
  • May 18, 2009 – Chicago, IL – Double Door
  • May 20, 2009 – Austin, TX – Emo’s
  • May 22, 2009 – Seattle, WA – Showbox
  • May 23, 2009 – Seattle, WA – Showbox
  • May 24, 2009 – Portland, OR – Roseland

The will feature Trevor Dunn on bass and will have Houdini played in its entirety.

Tool/Melvins Myth Busted?

Tool “Family” member Junior (or at least someone claiming to be him) posted a comment on Fourtheye just a little while ago:

Although no band member was mentioned, I believe Blair was talking about Danny’s attempt at grabbing a very fast foul ball. Danny and Blair were at the game as were Buzz and I, though we were seated in a different section from them. They were on the front edge of the first balcony (section 105) right behind home plate and just above the backstop safety net. Foul tips come screaming through there on a regular basis.
The guy on the Melvins board was on to nothing, as Buzz assures me he is not aware of any Tool/Melvins project.

Oh well, it sounded like a cool idea, but I dare say more of us are interested in Tool getting on with their own stuff…

Tool/Melvins/Ipecac Rumour

I read an intriguing post on themelvins.net BBS today, which reads:

Tool, Melvins, Ipecac Records

Something HUGE soon.  Just wait.  It WILL be worth it you prepubecent derelicts.  Oh, and Melvins as a four-piece=BEST YET.

Is the big suprise some kind of Tool/Melvins collaboration to be released on Ipecac?  Given the various record labels involved, this could go some way to explaining the delays in the surprise being released.

The thread also links back to the Adam Jones/King Buzz/Terry Bozzio project Adam mentioned a while ago, and speculates this may be the surprise?  Not so sure about that one personally, as the Tool link is a little too weak there, and I expect the Big Thing will involve more Tool than just AJ.

Filed firmly in the rumour (but exciting) department for now…

The Melvins join ATP New York

The Melvins have been announced as part of the lineup for the New York All Tomorrow Parties Festival this year, curated by The Flaming Lips. Also announced are personal favorites of mine The Jesus Lizard:

Today we’re pleased to announce the second group of announcements for our second ATP New York festival which runs from 11th-13th September 2009 and is co-curated by The Flaming Lips. The first event received widespread rave reviews and the second is shaping up to be just as good.

On Friday 11th September, joining the previously announced Dirty Three performing Ocean Songs, Suicide performing their legendary first LP and David Cross curating a comedy stage, we have:

THE JESUS LIZARD – their first New York show in many many years
THE DRONES – performing Wait Long By The River And The Bodies Of The Enemies Will Float By

On Saturday 12th September, joining the previously announced Animal Collective, Panda Bear, Black Dice, Antipop Consortium, Autolux and Atlas Sound we have:

MELVINS
EL-P
DEAD MEADOW
AKRON FAMILY
SLEEPY SUN

We will be announcing some of the bands that THE FLAMING LIPS, our Sunday headliners, have announced in the near future.

Sounds like a pretty good lineup overall.  Hey ATP guys – make sure The Jese Lizard and The Melvins are on the lineup for the Oz shows next year!
