Melvins 25th Birthday Celebrations!

According to a recent blog post on Myspace:

That’s right! The Melvins celebrate their Silver Anniversary this year! Lots of fun and surprises are coming! To kick off the festivities, the boys are doing some select shows performing the Houdini record in it’s entirety. One Mr. Trevor Dunn will be handling the bass duties while the Big Business boys are touring their new album “Mind The Drift”. Also along for the ride is original drummer Mike Dillard. The boys will play songs from the Mangled Demos record with Dale Crover playing the role of Matt Lukin! Check the show section for dates.

Date’s announced so far include:

  • 15 May 2009 Webster Hall NYC, New York
  • 16 May 2009 Paradise Boston, Massachusetts
  • 18 May 2009 Double Door Chicago, Illinois
  • 20 May 2009 Emo’s Austin, Texas

I’d be surprised if there weren’t any more shows to be announced.

Speaking of Big Business, a track from their upcoming album Mind The Drift can be heard on Myspace, and the drummer Coady has his own Twitter account too.  Hopefully some tour dates to come shortly.

The Melvins: Pick Your Battles

The Melvins have a new live release coming out this year. Called Pick Your Battles, it features a collaboration with comic artist Brian Walsby and features live track from two shows – one in 1989 and the other in 2008. These are limited to 3000 so don’t waste time if you’d like to secure a copy:

Once again, Mr. Brian Walsby has compiled a collection of edgy, biting comic art and bad assed, rare tunes from the Melvins. MANCHILD 4 is 100 pages of illustrations and stories from a comic artist who’s been poking fun at subversive youth culture, pop culture, your favorite band, and himself since the early ë80s. You’ll laugh. You’ll cringe. You just might get angry and start a message board war. Contents of Brian’s new book include “No! I Don’t Want To Play Your Effing House Party”, “Frisky’s Beaver Hut”, “We Were All Assholes”, “My First Orgasm”, “Emo Rock Revival”, and tons of others. There’s also an in depth Melvins 2008 tour diary that’s sure to break a few eggs.

Pick Your Battles is a 15 song CD of live Melvins tunes recorded in 1989 at the 924 Gilman St. Project in Berkeley, Ca. and in 2008 at the Paradise Rock Club in Boston. The track list is as follows: Koolegged, Oven, Cranky Messiah, Raise a Paw, Ever Since My Accident, Green Honey, Claude, You’re Blessened, Nude With Boots, The Kicking Machine, Eye Flys, Rat Faced Granny, The Hawk, You’ve Never Been Right, and Boris.

BATABING! There are 3000 of these on earth. How many do you have?

Melvins Sydney Gig

According to stubbadub.com the Melvins gig in Sydney will be held at the Annandale on the 22nd of January:

Almost 25 years, over 25 albums and still counting, the Melvins are considered one of the godfathers of sludge metal whom heavily influenced the Seattle grunge scene back in the 90′s. With a cult following across the globe, and including original members King Buzzo (Guitar/vocals) and Dale Crover (Drums/vocals), the band has recently released ANOTHER studio album, ‘Nude With Boots’.

And in the news that their Australian fans have been waiting for, this new release has inspired the boys to hit the road again! So on Thursday 22nd January, in a VERY special, VERY intimate show at Sydney’s Annandale Hotel – get ready to experience the Melvins performing their classic album ‘HOUDINI’ – in its entirety!! This will be their ONLY Sydney show, and with a line-up of the one ‘n only Buzz Osborne, Dale Crover & Trevor Dunn (Mr Bungle) on bass…Oh my goddddd!! www.myspace.com/themelvins

Word is that Mike Patton will be a special guest at the shows too.  Thanks to Adrian for the tip!

Melvins Melbourne Tickets on sale Tomorrow!

Tickets to the Melvins gig at the Ding Dong Lounge go on sale at Moshtix Friday morning 9:00am EST.  It is a small venue and I’d expect tickets to probably sell out, so if you’re planning on going, don’t delay!

According to the Ding Dong Lounge they will be performing Houdini in it’s entirety and Trevor Dunn from Fantomas will be on Bass.  That makes me ever more jealous of those that can go….

No word on the Sydney show at this stage except that it will be on the 22nd of January.

The Melvins Australia/NZ Tour Dates

The Melvins will be playing a few shows in Australia and New Zealand in January 2009 as described below:

Word on the street is that Melvins will be playing some shows in Australia in January ’09 while Fantomas is down under doing the Big Day Out 2009 festival dates. Be sure to check Ipecac’s calendar for up to date info on Fantomas shows. These Melvins dates will most likely be the lineup of Buzz, Dale, & Trevor Dunn on bass. The tentative dates so far:

  • January, 15 2009 – Aukland, New Zealand – TBA
  • January, 22 2009 – Sydney, Australia – TBA
  • January, 27 2009 – Melbourne, Australia – Ding Dong Lounge

Too bad the Melbourne show is on a weeknight otherwise I would have considered going over.  From what I understand this isn’t a proper tour and I look forward to a The Melvins/Big Business tour later in 2009…

Adam & Buzz at Grumpys

Mark got along to Grumpys bar the other night to be served drinks by Adam from Tool and Buzz from the Melvins.  He had this to say about the event:

They were real nice, both Adam and Buzzo allowed fans to take pictures with them. Adam was selling some of his prints for around $400.00 a piece. They had to cut the bartending gig short due to the fact we had a terrible snowstorm that night and they had to get back over to the other Grumpys for a Melvins show that was really good but I was hoping that Adam would have jumped on stage, but he didn’t. Oh, and no juicy new TOOL news to divulge, I was too star struck to ask questions.

Sounds like fun Mark.  He also sent me a few pictures for you guys to enjoy!

While we’re talking about the Melvins, I heard on the Melvins Forum that any Melvins gigs in Australia next month will be “secret” shows and not part of an official tour. It also won’t include Big Business, so I’d guess maybe two shows, one in Sydney and one in Melbourne with Trevor Dunn on bass.
