New Caduceus Reds available to Aussie Wine Drinkers

Our buddies at Sip Wines hav announced that they have some of Maynard’s latest Caduceus Red wines now in stock, and to celebrate are having a sale:

The New 2013 Caduceus Reds have landed in Australia! To celebrate, we’ve taken $20 off the Merkin & Caduceus Pack. This pack includes the delicious 2013 Caduceus Nagual de la NAGA & the brand new 2015 Merkin Chupacabra GSM Red from all Arizona grapes.

Sadly there is no goon sack option, however you do get $20 off the bottled variety.  They’re expensive wines, so probably for enthusiasts or special occasions only.  Though I haven’t tried any of the newer wines, the ones I have tried in the past have been pretty good, so worth an order if you’ve got the money lying around.

Caduceus Wine selections updated at Sip Wine

For Aussie lovers of Maynard’s Caduceus Wines, local distributor Sip Wine have recently received a new batch. They’re currently available on their website, and at time of writing the selection now includes:

Caduceus Cellars Dos Ladrones 2013: 50% Chardonnay, 50% Malvasia Blanca from Buhl Memorial Vineyard, Cochise County, Southern Arizona. Hand Picked, whole cluster oressed with a part cold ferment in stainless stell, part in puncheon. Maynard’s Tasting Notes : Seductive aromatic jasmine nose. Bright clean flavors with a hint of almond & lime zest. This ageable high elevation desert white is reflective of what AZ truly has to offer.”

Caduceus Cellars Lei Li Rose 2013: 100% Nebbiolo Rose from Southern Arizona. Delicious, fragrant & dry style of Rose that lingers in the mouth screaming for some procuitto and cheese.

Caduceus Cellars Sancha 2012: 97% Tempranillo, 3% Malbec from the Buhl Memorial Vineyard, Cochise County, Southern Arizona. Hand Picked and sorted then aged for 18 months in new and neutral French Oak. Maynard’s Tasting notes ” This full bodied 2012 Sancha balances a rustic savory warmth – with elegant dark, moody red fruits like dried black cherries and hints of leather, cocoa & tobacco….enjoy the smooth, lingering finish of this Rioja style wine.”

Merkin Chupacabra Blanca 2012: Maynard James Keenan’s creation of 26% Sauvignon Blanc, 26% Gewurztraminer, 20% Riesling, 14% Chardonnay, 11% Chenin Blanc, 3% Malvasia Bianca that is Barrel feremented and matured in stainless steel. “This wine just jumps out of the glass with its fresh fruit, bright spice and huge bouquet. The racey acidity and full texture are a delight to sip but it is the aromas that will have you entranced. You will have you nose in the glass all night enjoying this wine as it changes as the bottle is emptied. Matt@Sip Wine ”

Merkin Chupacabra Rosa 2013: A Rose creation of 62% Primitivo & 32% Montepulciano from Luna County in New Mexico.Luna County in New Mexico, USA. Whole bunch pressed, then Barrel fermented and rested in Stainless steel for 9 months TASTING NOTES: Watermelon and cranberry jolly ranchers…. Cherries, fruit punch, and pink roses.

Merkin Chupacabra Red 2013: 44% Cabernet Sauvignon, 31% Petite Sirah, 22% Syrah, 3% Malvasia Bianca from Luna County in New Mexico. The wine is more subtle than you would expect with an excellent balance of fruit, acidity, alcohol and tannin. The Chupacabra 2013 is blend from three full bodied grapes, Syrah (Same as Shiraz but grown in USA), Cab Sauv & Petite Sirah plus they throw in a touch the aromatic white Malvasia Bianca. You can taste each of the four different grapes but they are woven together seemlessly to create a delicious and complex red. The end result is greater than the sum of it’s parts. Easily sipped without food or bring it together with BBQ meats, slow cooked meals or char grilled vegetables” Matt@Sip Wine.

You can see the full range of wines and packages on the Sip Wine website here.

We all know it’s expensive, but let’s keep the whining in our glasses, and not in the comments below.

Buzz interview, Signed wine for sale

A couple of little things today, Shinji from the French Tool website Salival has posted an interview he did with Buzz from the Melvins.  Pictures from their recent show there can be found here.

Also, George emailed me a link to a Craigslist/Ebay auction for an autographed bottle of wine, singed by Maynard and Eric.  According to the post Maynard rarely signs stuff.  I guess he wasn’t aware of the dozen or so signing sessions Maynard is attending at the Whole Food Markets.  Bidding starts at US$49.

June 2008 Newsletter

As promised, Blair released the June 2008 newsletter, and this time it contains some “details” of what’s up in the Tool world. Head over to Toolband/Army to read it, but here’s my summary.

Adam is:

  • working on some undisclosed entertainment industry related project? Guitar Hero perhaps?
  • also involved in the construction of some future band-related endeavor. Building a recording studio perhaps?
  • Spending time playing Halo 3 and watching Baseball games with Buzz

Danny is:

  • spending lots of time in his loft studio gearing up for some music-related enterprise. Writing new material? Pigmy Love Circus record?
  • performing with Volto!
  • writing a book with Blair
  • other stuff including driving his lamborghini, painting his house, etc.

Justin is:

  • building a new house
  • working on new Tool riffs
  • possibly working on another musical project
  • revamping Lobal Orning at some point

Maynard is:

  • working on wine and Puscifer as outlined on his Myspace site
  • hopefully looking after his vocal chords

Tool are:

  • working to complete a couple of new projects
  • one of these is very close to becoming a reality

So there you have it. No detail really, but we didn’t expect that.

Wings Anniversary & and message from Maynard

Posted recently on Toolband/Army and Maynard’s Myspace site:

“Today Marks the 5 year anniversary of Judith Marie’s surrender to a 29
year struggle against time and gravity. Take a moment to count your
blessings. Remind yourself that life is short. (In Judith’s case, long
and painful.) Take a deep breath and allow the petty stuff to
disintegrate into dust and blow away. It’s all gonna work out. Judith’s
last wishes were that her final resting place be near me. So I brought
her ashes to my home in Arizona and spread her across the South East
facing slope so every morning she could watch the sunrise with me. Like
the Phoenix rising from the ashes, her new wings are these estate
vines. And like her, these vines are tenacious, vigorous, stubborn, and
the fruit is sexy and complex. I’m going to name this wine “Nagual del
Judith, Judith’s Cabernet Sauvignon.” Now she gets finally to travel
around the world, meet new and interesting people, and be around lots
and lots of great food. Pure Heaven.” – MJK

Maynard talks about Wine

For those of you interested in Maynard‘s winemaking exploits, Yumasun.com have an article about the recent signings that Maynard held in Arizona. The article talks with Maynard and partner Eric Glomski about the signings, and also about the wine.

Maynard “Big Brother” to Christopher Meloni

I came across an article on Wine Spectator who talk to Law & Order start Christopher Meloni. In the interview he mentions his relationship with Maynard:

WS: I understand that winemaker, rock singer and Wine Spectator blogger Maynard James Keenan is something of a wine mentor to you. Tell us about that.
CM: We get together in New York to drink wine, usually the day before he does a concert here. The first time we met, it was [actress] Janeane Garofalo who got us together. We went to Babbo and ordered a magnum of ’96 Sassicaia, and it’s blossomed from there. He’s kind of my big brother in wine. I’ve offered to have him put me to work in Arizona [where he co-owns vineyards]. My dream is to one day make my own wine. It used to be a dream of owning a vineyard in Italy and making my own, but now, after hearing about some of the challenges that Maynard’s endured, I’d be content to make my own wine and let someone else have the headache of ownership. [Laughing]

Other than that, it’s not a particularly interesting read…

Maynard’s Birthday

….was yesterday. Having said that, it’s still his birthday in the US, so I’m sure he’s taking some time to enjoy a nice glass of wine. Have a good one!
