Maynard’s Wine, Interview

A couple of articles just came across my desk thanks to Google.  The first one is an article which speaks about a Tool fans journey to get a bottle of Maynard‘s Nagual de la Naga.

The second is an interview with Maynard on Maximum Ink.  Maynard talks about Tool, and various views he has on life.

MAX INK: As a band, you go to such lengths to express a voice. Take the alternate track listing for “Lateralus,” for example. Is that something you hope to see people explore, that second layer of meaning in the songs?
MAYNARD: Are you familiar with the movie “Life of Brian”? I would hope that people wouldn’t be standing there holding a sandal, thinking it’s a sign. I would hope that they would just see us doing something, then go off on their own and do something. Be inspired by it. I love the idea of a kitchen full of cooks coming up with a new recipe because they were listening to the album and doing their own thing. They’re not worried about meeting us, or tripping on what we had for lunch or where we’re going on vacation, or what we meant here or there. They were just inspired by the music and made an incredible dish.

Tool just played the perfect setlist:

Stinkfist
The Pot
Forty-Six & 2
Jambi
Schism
Rosetta Stoned
(small part of Intension)
Right in Two
Wings for Marie
10,000 Days
Lateralus
(break)
(interlude)
Vicarious
Aenema

If this is similar to what they play in Sydney and Melbourne then I will be more than happy…

arrrgghh… no, I open the comments and see the one thing I want to avoid, set-lists… my own fault really.

New design, I like it, but you’re right, it does need a logo or something interesting up the top.

Okay… that was weird, the new design, or what I assumed it was, just disappeared on the main page… Maybe it was just me…

wings for marie/10,000 days would have been an interesting experience. after not listening to 10,000 days for 2 odd months or so I have a greater appreciation for the epic track. it’s definitely the biggest highlight of the album. the other songs don’t have as lasting listening pleasure and lose their appeal quite quickly. WINGS/1,000 FTW!

Definitely keep Stinkfist and 46&2. Have you ever seen/heard Danny and the guys go absolutely nuts towrds the end of 46&2? It’s awesome! I saw H. in Brisbane back in 2002 and it was one of the best songs of the night – when Maynard sang “I don’t mind… I don’t miiiiiind” etc the whole place erupted in a non-volcanic way. It was pretty special… I haven’t seen/heard the new slightly sped-up version of Schism yet so I’ve got no problems with them continuing it’s play. Sorry to spoil it above with that setlist (charred remains will be pissed :))… Read more »

It’s okay mattw, I saw it listed and avoided it… although I know what they’re going to play last, that’s all I know.

Just saw the Chaser’s War On Everything… last one for the year, tragedy. Back to avoiding tv altogether…. Last was well worth while though…

Charred Remains you have amazing control NOT to look at a setlist thus far but I understand why you are avoiding such things – it will be awesome when you finally get to the gig and Tool come on and you have no real idea of the order of songs…

I kinda wish I could erase some of my memory and do the same but oh well.

H. rules! If any Tool song has gotten to me emotionally, it was that one. I can’t believe you said what you said! I’d choose H. in stead of Vicarious ANYDAY. Awesome interview though, thanks for that. Favourite part: MAX INK: To that end, what are some of the things you look to for creativity? If someone wanted that same spark, where would they turn? MAYNARD: I have no idea. It has more to do with being in tune with what you like and what you respond to, like flavors, or scents, or visual stimulation. It’s about ‘know thyself,’ sound… Read more »

If thats the setlist for Sydney, I’ll be very happy. Its the best you could ask for with the current songs in rotation.
