Kassel on Toolarmy has posted a link to an article which gives us some more insight into Tool‘s video and lighting show, as well as some of the logistics behind it:
It’s hard to explain the depth of what goes into the production at a Tool concert to somebody who is not in our industry. Much like their music, the production is intelligent and progressive—the interplay of video and lighting is the key aspect of the entire performance. And it has been since mid-‘90s, when Haggerty created a device, later known the NEV System, for triggering content long before media servers, as we know them today, existed.
“Tool has never allowed the use of followspots or live cameras. All of the video is playback. It’s all looped clips that aren’t tracked to a song like a music video. The band has never used any sort of timecode. They’ve always made sure the video can change on-the-fly, in a way that can be improvised. That’s a big important part of the production,†says Haggerty. “The show is never the same twice.â€
In other news, John Ziegler from Volto! and his band Amalgatron will be performing at the La Ve Lee Club in Studio City on the 9th of November.
Finally, for those of you considering purchasing the Platinum Lateralus, there’s still some available in the Toolarmy Bazaar
that’s nice..
That’s very positive of you doors. Ride the wave man it’s all good
never the same twice? I could have swore I saw the same show 3 times.
I think by never the same they mean in the same way to snowflakes are never the same. Sure they’re different, but you have to look *really* hard…
Yeah. That’s pretty lame. The looping animations make the shows SO UNIQUE. Fuck off.
^
Well it ain’t their live performances by any stretch of the imagination, Panopoly.
Unique or not unique every time, the visuals still add something to the spectacle.
Speaking of which, I’ve got side view seats – Gold section, I think about mid way back into Gold.. you guys reckon I’ll still be able to see the visuals and more importantly Danny?
In other news, tool’s tour page had listed more side shows in brisbane, adelaide and perth, but have now taken them down. Maybe waiting on the official release from the promoters. I fuckin’ hope so.
In regards to seeing the show properly, last time I took a pair of binoculars. Worked a treat and got to watch Danny up close….
do you remember the dates on the website? That’s just cruel
Very cruel indeed. I can’t find any mention of this on any of the sites I hang around…
I didn’t see the sight, my mate saw it 2 days ago, they took it down straight away. I hope it ain’t bullshit. As if the BDO Sideshows page isn’t confusing enough.
shut up you idiot, wrong ears.
bdo sounds like fun, despite the crap bands. how long does it go for?
a whole day 😀
It normally goes for about 12 hours, with the headline band finishing at about 10:30, and the Boiler Room closing about an hour later. Despite the line-up, it is a good festival, and generally pretty well organised.
All i can say over the past few months is that…….the god damn Vicarious video better be the best thing to happen ever, if not i think i’ve lost a bit of tool inside of me.
Too bad it’s not a campout thing like woodstock, that would be deadly.
Mhe, personally I could do without camping with thousands of drunk/stoned/whacked idiots. One day works for me.
Cuts down on the rape too I guess.
But being idiotic/drunk/stoned/whacked sounds like a lot of fun.
I can tell by the BDO site that it’s a total stoner fest…
From my experience it’s more of a surfer/jock drinking festival. Too many guys with no shirts in the mosh-pit for my liking…..
The Big Day Out is about as alternative as a U2 concert these days.
well said hellboy. thats exactly it. until it hits darkness. then the stoners multiply 😀
Nothing like sniffer dogs nuzzling your nuts,
welcome to the sydney bdo.
At least this year there’ll be less knobs
wrapped in the flag, and can’t wait to let fly
with something at the first idiot, chick or guy,
on someone’s shoulder. How’s the fourth eye beach balls coming along hellboy? We need something to
keep us occupied when the Streets are on.
I’ll be watching the Streets. There’s nothing quite like some cockney British street poetry….
it’s mockney not cockney, so dry your eyes mate.
whoa the streets is gonna be there? I musta missed that. bad ass.
Haha their setlist is funny. Same songs for the last three shows.
In fact same setlist as their last tour. Autopilot here I come!
I remember the wave of massive, sweatie, dreadlocked, piss soaked monster Slipknot fans that smashed their way through the John Butler Trio pit in Sydney in 05′, just to be on the barrier. One girl was instructed to ‘get off the barrier or be thrown over’. She refused, and the fat bastard didn’t hesitate to hurl her out of the way. That said, the Slipknot mosh turned out to be fairly tame. All the fans were too unhealthy and didn’t have the stamina to jump around!
I hope it doesn’t happen again at Syd for TooL. That would shit me.
John Butler Trio fans deserve everything they get….
And the Slipknot mosh I sure was tame because Slipknot are really quite tame.
Slipknot Tame? Dunno about that?
Slipknot Tame? Dunno about that?
Compared to most metal bands I listen to, very tame. Then again I do have a soft spot for grindcore….
Me 2.
Still can’t put down the latest 3 Opeth CD’s though
Slipknot sucks so much ass! They were put together by a record fucking company. Oh well, that’s all I got. Stone Sour sucks too. Fuck. And they are tame, but fans think they’re hardcore. Fuck I hate Slipknot. And Stone Sour.
I’d go and see Evanescence, because, well, it’s a guilty pleasure, but Stone Sour is opening. And Fuck I hate Stone Sour.
Blah blah blah the end.
