I’ve had it suggested to me by several people that Tool are “past it”, or “irrelevant”, or that certain members of the band are no longer into it. It has also been mentioned that recent live performances have been sub-par. Personally i don’t know that I agree with all of this, but this week I ask the controversial question – should Tool call it a day?
Ooh this poll is an intriguing one. I definitely don’t think that they should “call it a day”, nor do I think they will. Danny, Justin and Adam all seemed very enthusiastic when I saw them live several times recently. At times I thought Maynard wasn’t all that into it but over the years I have come to realise that’s just how he is, wheteher it be Tool, APC or being interviewed. The band as a whole seemed especially enthusiastic at the Sydney Entertainment sideshow which is one of the best gigs I’ve seen, if not the best. I think… Read more »
All I know is that the bands headlining Bonnaroo typically play 3 hour sets, and I’ve seen 2 shows since 10,000 days came out,(13 overall) and I realize they’ve been playing shorter shows. There is no chance I’m going to miss the Bonnaroo show and I’m hoping that with a festival that big (the main stage there has a capacity of 100,000) and the tremendous amount of money they’re going to be paid for it that they bust out even a half hour more of stuff. I’d give my mother’s right hand to see Disposition/Reflection/Triad one more time, and the… Read more »
No. No. No. No. No….NO! I mean come on!!! Whats the deal? 10,000 days is an awesome album. They are awesome live. When I saw them on the opening show of the tour, the whole band looked like they were riding a huge wave. maynard was more subdued when I saw them in NY, but he was performing 10,000 days….kind of a downer emotionally. I think that when they come back to the states this year, and start recording some of the shows, the energy level will shoot through the roof. When they recorded the last 8? shows of the… Read more »
these people who think they are sub-par, must have been high, soo high.
Don’t quote me on this, but I believe they only have one more album left on their contract. A live CD from the 2007 tour would complete that contract. I don’t know how much more we’ll be seeing out of Tool after this year. Maynard just doesn’t have the range that he used to, everyone else seems bored, just going through the motions of playing the same setlist night after night after night.
it IS a good question. the music only seems to get better, but maynard is less present. with a few of my friends we each saw about 20 shows each since 95. the last few – particularly three from this tour – showed a change in dynamic. i saw three shows in japan in really small venues. maynard kinda seemed like he was just doing his job, whereas the rest were really into it and enjoying the hell out of it (at least justin and danny; adam just sort of chills). we also hung out after the shows and without… Read more »
wheres the FUCK NO option?
wheres the FUCK NO option?
My sentiments exactly. lol. This is a fun one.
I can understand heaps of the points made above, but i found when I saw them at BDO that they seemed to be enjoying it on a new level. The older songs seemed a lot more anthemic to both the crowd AND to Tool themselves. And 10k days material is finely crafted, new and interesting. The comment that Tool have jumped the shark with 10,000 days annoys me as I think there are some really good songs in there that show a fine-tuning of the craft of all 4 of them as musicians. I think the most surprising comment I… Read more »
Well this poll is like saying jesus should hang up his thorns and pull the nails of the cross in other words its pure blasphemy
I have been wondering about MJK and his voice and its pretty clear from bootlegs of 2001/2 tour and he is certainly not doing as much of the aggro screaming that he once did, who can blame him though, fuck singing the grudge every second night with that roaaaaaaaar – surely not good. I just hope that its a voice management or a minor illness that he had to deal with whilst touring Australia that restricted him on occasion from going off. Either way that show in Sydney went off as if a band should quit anything when they can… Read more »
Just for the record, this poll is not necessarily a sign that I think they should break up. Just a method of opening discussion on what is probably a touchy subject to many.

Maybe we should do the religious thing then and ignore that the possibility exits? Ignorance is bliss!
Didn’t vote. There’s no “Yes, only when the band themselves feels it is necessary” It’s obvious to many that this is a band that isn’t swayed by outside influences. They’ll call it a day when they are no longer into it. And since they’re still recording and touring and talking about the next record, I’d say they’re still into it. Anyone that was at the Sydney Entertainment Centre show can’t say otherwise. People/ bands change and mature that’s the natural progression of life. Tool aren’t obviously all about the agro anymore. It’s no longer ’93 anymore. Some people have to… Read more »
There’s no “Yes, only when the band themselves feels it is necessary”
I did consider that option, but felt it was maybe unnecessary, since we all know Tool would do that anyway. The poll is about what *you* think.
Anyone that was at the Sydney Entertainment Centre show can’t say otherwise.
I agree, I was at the Sydney Entertainment Centre show as you all know, and it was as good a Tool show as I’ve seen. Maynard’s voice was noticeably different, but not to the detriment of the show in my opinion. The changes to the way Maynard… Read more »
Despite what some people say about Maynard looking less enthusiastic on stage these days, the big ‘WooP!’ he let rip as they busted into Stinkfist at the EC suggested he was pretty happy, or at least exploiting the sarcasm side of humour.
Oh c’mon where is Doors usual rant and rave, along with the predicted payout?
I’m dissapointed.
PsyKer, he was doing Lil Jon ‘OKAAAAAAAAAAYS’ at the Australian show.. I guess they got the Chapelle Show dvds on the tour bus/plane/limo/wine mobile.
Good on them if they feel the need to make more albums.
I’m just not going to anticipate it as much as I did the previous 2. When it comes out it comes out. If it’s good enough for my liking, I’ll buy it if not then I’ll intraweb it. I’ve learnt from my past mistakes.
It’s like yehwhatevas.
I personally would like to see at least one more album from them, to see where they take it from here.Sydney Entertainment Center show was really good and it seemed like they were having fun instead of trying to blow your mind as on the lateralus tour. I really liked it when Maynard taunted Danny during one song. However, the Melbourne show was really, really average.I think Maynard had strained his voice and could hardly hit all the notes. My friend and i were cringing on a few songs as we thought his voice was going to crack and he would walk… Read more »
Definitely not. Why should they unless they simply don’t want to any more. Judging from 10000 Days, they still have great compositional ideas. Live, they’re always professional.
I’m hoping they’ll be like King Crimson who keep releasing amazing albums year after year although I’ve never had the chance to see them live except for Adrian Belew (awesome!)
Long live Tool. Destroy the scene.
R.
My goodness, doors has grown up. Awesome. 😀
i will not vote.. its not an option for me … sorry
I’ve said this countless number of times on tool navy, especially after 10k days was released. I’m tired of writing the same thing over and over again so I’ll be concise. I think 10k days sucks, and the live experience doesn’t come close to what it was like seeing them during the lateralus and aenima days.

Thanks for your opinion. I don’t agree with it.
i’ll raise your dissent sir. i do believe the same. 10,000 days live = pink floyd’s pulse. subpar music/superb live show. i don’t like the watered down musicianship of this new album, (think 5 minute TALKBOX solo from Peter Frampton’s heroin days, and drums full of boring straight beats on a crash and ride) and i think the intent now is off base. this man has been telling me to think for myself for 15 years now. What he tells me now is that I need to take action, etc. good message. do something. do it well, do it with… Read more »
I have just purchased my ticket(s?) for the Baton Rouge, Louisiana show on March 31st. I was in the queue online with Ticketmaster and was very fortunate to get any tickets as that venue sold out completely within 30 minutes of tickets going on-sale. TOOL are at the height of their prowess on their prospective instruments, and the whole of the band as a unit is certainly even greater than the enormous sum of the individual talents. Every album has shown extraordinary growth towards I-don’t-even-know-what level of musicianship and perfection. My ticket is printed-out and 3.31.07 is marked with a… Read more »

I should also add that Maynard has gained a solid 10-15 lbs. of fat since the 2001-2003 tour– he doesn’t move or get into the songs like he used to;seeing him attempt a shirtless girate is kind of sad.
I couldn’t care less that Maynard has put on a few pounds in 5 years. It has little influence on why I listen to and enjoy his music. Who gives a shit what they look like? Is Justin’s hair too long for you? Fuck. Of all the things to complain about. David Gilmour and Roger Waters have obviously aged but I still love Pink Floyd. Idiot.
I can’t vote >
seeing him attempt a shirtless girate is kind of sad.
I reckon the bucking headjob he doing now is one of his better moves. How about a poll of “bands that should call it a day ”
I’m thinking U2, jet, wolfmother…… just off the top of my head
Pink Floyd will always be good, sir. As will Crimson and any other band whose musical output was once good.
Tool are departing…checked.
