This weeks Poll was suggested by Brandon. He wants to know, what album got you into Tool? It may not be your favorite Tool recording, but what one made you sit up and say “these guys are good!”.

I remember listening to all of my older brother’s music back in high school around 1996/97 and really loving Stinkfist, 46 & 2 and Aenema. I then listened to all of Aenima and loved it! Hearing songs like Eulogy (8 mins), Pushit (11 mins) and Third Eye (13 mins) blew me away given the crappy shorter songs on the radio at the time…
meat too.. cept it was like, eulogy and hwap first
For me it was during Aenima that I got into Tool. I was well aware of Tool by the time it came out, having heard Sober and Prison Sex played on Triple J quite regularly, but while I didn’t dislike the songs, nothing really jumped out and grabbed me. Then one afternoon I was listening to Adam Spencer (I think) and he played Stinkfist. Something about the song made me sit up and listen. I remember one of my first thoughts was that I liked the dual mic technique that Maynard was using, and I was also impressed with how… Read more »
I think I first (unknowingly) heard Maynard on the “Three Little Piggies” track by Green Jelly (UK name) – which I hated. Unfunny, “comedy” rock… : ) Then I heard him again (and checked the credits to see who he was) on the first Rage Against The Machine album. Thirdly UK magazine Kerrang wrote a small news article about a new US band who “could be the new Jane’s Addiction” (or something along those lines), who I was a big fan of, so I made the effort to shell out for “Opiate” on import and still have the unused sticker… Read more »
I always heard Aenima songs on the radio and liked them, but didn’t know who they were by and would just sort of forget about them. My sister then played the whole album for me a few months before Lateralus came out and I loved it. Lateralus took it to the next level though. They then opened the door for all of the alternative/avant/prog rock/metal I listen to now.
i guess shamefully it was in 94, from bevis and butthead 🙁
undertow, however once I saw them live at Lollapalooza in 97, I was amazed.
I have a cousin who was attending Berklee in Boston in 1991. He had acquired a copy if 72826 as it had been circulating in circles there. When he came home for the Christmas holidays that year he played it for me and I asked him if I could dub a copy (remember cassette tapes?) and I still have the copy somewhere. I have since acquired the recording as mp3’s. I’m not going to say it’s their best recording, but I will say it hooked me and I have followed them ever since. I think it should have been included… Read more »
I heard about Tool through APC.
It’s off topic, but I thought it was funny. Just read this interview with Mastadon’s guitarist Bill Kelliher were he mentions touring with Tool. “Have you got any tour stories that stand out? We have a good tour manager who is really good at keeping everybody together so because of that we don’t have many mishaps like forgetting band members at a hotel. But one story I can share is she second last show we did with Tool. Justin the bass player got into this giant monkey costume with all these bananas and Adam Jones was wearing a white suit… Read more »
