This week I ask a controversial question in regards to Tool’s set list. Many of you complain that there is too little variety in the current list. Some argue that since the presumption is that the majority of people see only one show per tour, this isn’t a big deal, while others defend it by suggesting the set needs to stay the same due to staging reasons.
How do you feel about this? has it negatively altered your view on Tool’s performances? Would you bother seeing Tool a second time, or is each Tool show a unique experience regardless of the set list? Vote now an let us know your thought by commenting below.
I’ve seen Tool live 6 times, I’ve also seen many other bands more than once. There are always going to be the same core list of tracks for every gig, every other band does likewise. I saw Tool 3 times at the start of this year, and the setlist changed from night to night, because the performances were shorter and shorter each time, meaning good songs left out, which was frustrating. I’ve seen some bands play exactly the same tracks over different nights, and even say the same things and crack the same jokes in between songs. Alternatively, I saw… Read more »
the yes options are to biased towards TOOL being slack, lazy, sucking.
can there be a Yes – but I understand they do a lot of work to present the visuals and major alterations would probably take a lot of time cost x amount of $’s option?

As a band that consistently write tracks in excess of 10 minutes it’s quite unreasonable that the length of their gigs has diminished so significantly over the years,… Read more »
I’d be happy to see them play H. or more material from Lateralus, especially Triad and The Grudge.
my comment was probably abit simplified in its also the time and work in putting in whatever they need to get “performance” ready on the tracks they do use for each tour rather than purely just the visual aspects of the show. Which would probably still be minimalist in regards to other acts these days I would imagine – at least the Australian variant is.

Maybe they just haven’t got enough… Read more »
This is a tough one for me. This band is full of rabid perfectionists. They’ve had 200 shows to fine-tune every aspect of this tour. Here we are at the end and they’re playing the same FLOOD setlist each night. It’s a tight set and Maynard’s been in a much better mood with this particular setlist. I have a feeling that if he did attempt to mix it up more, the 10k days tour would have ended 9 months ago. That being said, I went to both San Diego shows. The second show featured the debut of Pushit in place… Read more »
Man, as much as it’d be cool for them to shake it up more, I wouldn’t want it to be at the expense of Lateralus…
I WOULD GIVE MY LEFT NUT TO SEE TOOL PLAY LATERALUS IN CONCERT.
I’M SAVING MY RIGHT NUT FOR THE NEXT TOOL ALBUM.
If you read the interview in Spin Magazine, he talks about how it is physically and mentally destructive for him to revisit the emotions when performing certain songs live.
I’d give away all my nuts for them to play Aenima. Lateralus does nothing for me…no soul in that album.
ive seen tool 19 times now, 8 times having been on the 10,000 days tour, and the setlist has only changed slightly, and by slighlty i mean 1 or 2 different songs at mose. while this can be fustrating to shell out 75 bucks a pop, the show is so awesome that its slightly hard to complain. on that note, i could do without fortysix & 2 and schism. but oh well…. third eye also does eclipse the whole wings section of the show…
also, as markian says, NIN does change everynight. like him i’ve seen like 4 times in a two week span and the shows are always quite different… but it i think it has to do with tr not wanting to rip off his hard core fans who see the same tour mutliple times
