In light of Nine Inch Nails recent release Ghosts, this time I ask if Tool release their next album using the same model, which version would you purchase.
For those who don’t know, the options are:
- Free download of part of the album
- $5 for a digital only copy of the entire album
- $10 for the standard CD
- $75 deluxe edition featuring a Blu-Ray disc with extras
- $300 Ultra-Deluxe edition, numbered and signed vinyl limited to 2500
Man, that’s a good question. And as much as I love the distribution method for Ghosts, I would be sad if Tool went this route because I would just not be able to spend $300 and I hate missing out on things.
Oh, and that’s not to mention that at the moment Tool is on a major label so I absolutely could not in good conscience pay that label $300.
First I would download it and if it was anything like Lateralus and 10,000 Days I wouldn’t pay for it at all. Learnt that mistake twice in the past…not going to be fooled again by a half effort tbh.
so basically NIN ripped off Radiohead?
so basically NIN ripped off Radiohead?
Yeah, cause no one ever sold anything online before Radiohead did.
lol, yea NIN ripped off Radiohead, ripped off their business plans. I don’t think any other business or entity has ever used another entity’s infrastructure to become successful…
Im ready for a NIN tour!!!!!
the 75 dollar one would be good.
idk, IMO, if your a hardcore fan you’ll get the money to pay for the artwork and a copy on vinyl. So the most expensive option. But then again perhaps one’s resources are limited..like a fan in jail. Cuz a kid could beg/steal/sell there other cd’s for the money. I rather have the standard cd and the vinyl.

come on, don’t be ridiculous. Radiohead was the first band to sell an album like that.
come on, don’t be ridiculous. Radiohead was the first band to sell an album like that.
Who’s being ridiculous? What do you mean by “like that”? Presumably you mean releasing it for sale online in a digital format, and I’m pretty damn sure Radiohead weren’t the first to do that…
theres nothing wrong with what nin have done, radiohead only started that form of selling an album its not a copywrited act!! it will be used more frequently in the future.
Also i would probably get the best of whats to offer from the new album. $300? so be it
Radiohead didn’t start online distribution of music. The only thing remarkable about theirs was the “pay what you choose”. NIN’s method works again differently to Radiohead’s.
Radiohead asked you to pay what you want for a digital download, and what you got was 160kbps MP3s with track titles and that’s about it. The deluxe edition of the Radiohead album came with a second disc of music — the contents of both discs combined could easily have fit on one CD. The NIN release is the real deal – you can download 320kbps LAME-encoded MP3s for free, or download a lossless version of the album, each track having artwork embedded in it, plus the PDF booklet… not a bad deal for $5. Johnny Greenwood stated in an… Read more »

However, half assed? How the fuck would you know? “Not going to be fooled again”…fooled by whom? A band released an album of material they worked on. You dont like it? Fine enough…dont listen to it. There was no fooling involved. You paid… Read more »
As for the poll itself, I think it all depends on the quality of the extras. I break it down this way. I obviously want the full album as they have yet to let me down with a release. I want a physical copy with a cd and artwork as well. Here is where it all depends on the extras. If im getting some lame 5 minute run through of how the cd label was printed at the printing press…no thank you. If theres anything of substance and worth-while length, the 75$ looks nice.
Bah! Here I am trying to kickstart my mind into devising a succinct statement regarding the NIN/Radiohead digital pissing contest but Leviathant beat me to it!! Have to say I totally agree with the venerable Mr NINHotline, Trent really pulled out all of the stops on Ghosts. Radiohead just used their Pay-what-you-will method as a lowly marketing gimmick – I just feel sorry for the poor saps who forked out more than they should’ve for the crappy quality audio. With regard to Tool, it seems that they’re able to maintain relatively good record sales as a result of their audio/visual… Read more »
Wait till you guys listen to the first song of Cog’s new album ‘Sharing Space’, it literally shits all over tool’s catalog. In fact any catalog for that matter…
ahh why are you still hear then, go bitch on “Cogs” fourtheye.
I think Cog are a good live band, and musically they’re pretty cool, but the singers voice is like fingernails down a blackboard for me…
I’ll check out the new album, but if it’s anything like the last couple, I don’t know that I’ll really enjoy it.
i didnt know that Peach had a king crimson cover.. that was a nice recent surprise
I went to buy the mars volta album and the nin album and it didnt exist . Ghosts
they didnt release all features at the same time , why ? that being ultra mega editions , mp3 and blue ray .. and who is this ray !? i like blue .. but ray!? why not blue something else …
enterprises , go figure !
The 1st song off the new album flynn really stretches his vocal abilities, sounds unlike him. I love his vocals. Can’t please everyone. It’s like Adam Jones he ain’t exactly a guitar maestro.

What did Whisp just fuckin say about talking about Cog. No one cares if you think they are a good live band or if they are musically “cool”, although Cog fourtheye may be interested so go bitch about it there.

Obviously some people care what I think otherwise this site would have no readers.
Anyway, if you don’t care what I think, they why even bother with a response?
Yeah dickhead!
You tell em hellboy.
I would buy the $10 cd package and then go buy the $300 package,I have never downloaded music and I never will. This is assuming the $300 pack comes with the blu-ray and all the bells and whistles but I’m sure it would.
Woah. Is anyone here aware of the huge amount of spam that’s tacked on to the bottom of this page? If you’re in Firefox, click your view menu, then page style, then none, and scroll to the bottom…

Reading these comments, I can’t help but feel that a lot of people have a point when they go on about “tool fans”. And this is coming from one.
so is it just tool fans or just people ?
I dunno but almost all online communities of tool fans I’ve seen have been full of pointless bickering and fighting and pretentious statements about all kinds of music and euch. Makes me wonder if we all listen to the same band. =\
I would download it for free, and if I liked it, I would buy it.
