In a recent interview with Rolling Stone, Maynard reveals that Tool are considering playing some new material on the road:
While the band isn’t touring behind any new material — its last album was 2006’s 10,000 Days — the frontman says Tool are quietly working on a new disc that’ll be released "when it’s ready." But they’re considering testing out some new material live. "We’re always writing," Keenan says. "If it comes together, yeah, you’ll hear some new stuff. If it’s not ready, you won’t."
I’d still be somewhat surprised if we heard any, but it’s nice to know they’re considering it.
He also goes onto mention that work an a new A Perfect Circle album has commenced:
The frontman also revealed he is working on a fourth LP for massively successful side project A Perfect Circle, their first disc since 2004’s Emotive. "We’ve got some riffs and some music. It’s just basically playing it over and over again while driving and waiting for things to fall into place."
Thanks to everyone who emailed me the link.

Happy to hear that a new APC will happen someday. It was said before that only a few songs was what they were going to be working on but i don’t see how a whole album will not come out of it. Them playing new material on this tour doesn’t seem likely. I wish i get proven wrong but we only got a very short part of what became Wings/10,000 days in ’01 and ’02. They did however play songs off of Aenima before the album was released. I’ll know once the lights go up and it’s time to head… Read more »
Wish I was in the US…
I hope they play something new! Â Ive got great tickets for New Orleans, and my trusty recording device will catch all the music, new or old!
As a Canadian, I completely agree with Maynard about us being smarter than everybody else. He hit the nail on the head with that one.

Eh!
Two fantastic findings from this interview. Its hard to read Maynard sometimes from each interview. With this kind of interview that he gave Rolling Stone, he must have gotten along with the interviewer and he didn’t ask redundant questions that do not matter. From other people’s perceptions of him, I think he is still totally in to what he does (APC, Tool, wine, puscifer, etc.) I just think he takes it all in stride and likes to focus on a collaboration of it all in bits and pieces. This way he won’t get bored. Remember…he is an insanely bright person… Read more »
Thats fucking fantastic! I think Im even more stoked about the APC news than the new Tool material. I thought they said they were gonna release some new music piecemeal versus putting together an album though, but I dont really care either way.
Thanks for posting this, the perfect icing on an already good day.
although both of these little tidbits sound absolutely fucking fantastic, but, not to be the piss in anyone’s punchbowl, but our favorite band sure as shit ISNT going to be premiering any new material on this leg of the 12,000 Days Tour, because the stingy pricks know as well as we all do that any new songs played live will be streaming on the internet around the globe within 3 hours of the show… and these fan-loving fellas dont do anything without guaranteeing that they’ll get paid for it… handsomely. no free new music for the fans who spend their entire savings… Read more »

Yeah, Im reminded of when they were supposedly going to perform a cover they had written on the summer 2009 tour… which never materialised. So who knows. Between the news of possible new live material and some new stage visuals though, Im getting the feeling that this tour is going to be something special.

My initial thoughts exactly. Â Still at least it’s nice to know that songwriting is pretty well advanced.
Not expecting much from either band TBH, if it’s shit I won’t care. If it’s good I’ll be stoked.
Wait. Hold on a minute.
How do we know that MJK is referring to the upcoming live shows? This quote seems to me like he’s talking about whether or not they bring out a new album itself, not playing new stuff live this tour.
But they’re considering testing out some new material live. “We’re always writing,” Keenan says. “If it comes together, yeah, you’ll hear some new stuff. If it’s not ready, you won’t.”

You’re reading it into far too much. He clearly meant playing a few new tunes in the live shows…
‘The frontman says Tool are quietly working on a new disc that’ll be released “when it’s ready.” But they’re considering testing out some new material live. “We’re always writing,” Keenan says. “If it comes together, yeah, you’ll hear some new stuff. If it’s not ready, you won’t.”
It isnt that clear.
It would only be clear if there was a direct quote from MJK saying they will possibly be playing new songs in the upcoming tour… not assuming things based on comments thrown in by some random interviewer who thought they played sober last tour…
ok!! Finally good news!!! ,,,we have to be more patient now… the universe adapts itself again…good!….. by the way! Fifa world cup is starting right now!!…Go Mexico!!
after reading this, it has now exceeded four hours, and i will be contacting a doctor.
jarred…….find someone to give you a hug, or a bj. find happiness in positive thinking. if you have such a sour taste regarding TOOL, go away.
I can’t imagine Tool would allow the potential for shitty internet recordings of a new song before the new album is even released…
All good news, but am I the only one puzzled by the idea that theyll ponder playing new tunes, but not ponder playing the old stuff????
Glad to hear APC is still going….. i know it may be blashpemy, but at times I prefer APC to tool…. I want to hear well made songs, not odd time signatures….
Those are not mutually exclusive…
Its really going to be interesting to see what direction they take. I would love a return to the roots-something real balls to the wall like Undertow/Opiate. With Tool though, you either love it or hate it. Here’s the beginning of all the speculation for the new album folks…
seanhalas my dear toolfanboi…Tool have disappointed me before and I’m allowed to voice my opinion. It’s called free speech dickhead.
It better be worth the damn wait! Actually I’m more excited about APC releasing a new album than TOOL.
actually JARRED it would be more an example of free speech if you created something yourself, not use someone elses website just to be a rebel and disagree with everyone.
i am sorry TOOL has dissapointed you in the past. i had no idea that they singled people out like that and offended them. i am currently considering my fanship now!! LOL
I love APC but I am so much more excited about Tool. An ‘APC’ album just came out not to long ago entitled C is for insert sophmoric gental reference here.
This explains sooo much about you Jarred.
Jarred is disappointed that he keeps buying stuff he does not like… sounds like a hooker with a penis.
