In a short and to the point post on Toolband Blair confirmed the Big Day Out dates for Tool, however has made no mention of any side shows:
BIG DAY OUT FESTIVAL DATES
Jan 21 – Auckland
Jan 23 – Gold Coast
Jan 26 – Sydney
Jan 30 – Melbourne
Feb 4 – Adelaide
Feb 6 – Perth
I still expect sideshow to be announced, the question is when. As soon as I know you’ll know…
I’m sorry for the negativity but remember last time they headlined BDO we knew about sideshows in late August. Tickets went on sale a week or so later and sold out. Then the official BDO announcement was made. What’s going on this time around? Anyway, without starting another internet rumour, here are my sideshow date predictions:
Sydney Entertainment Centre – Tuesday January 25 2011
Myer Music Bowl – Tuesday February 1 2011
I just hope the lack of a new album to promote isn’t holding things back etc. We will find out soon enough…

^Fair enough. The organisers would be pissed about info leaking and then seeing Tool sell out sideshows before any offical BDO announcement is made. I can live with that. Hopefully after the the BDO tickets sell strongly next week we will hear about sideshows. Want me to buy you a ticket again Hellboy?
It’s all good…

We’ll talk closer to the event. Â Depends a bit on timing as to whether I’d go to Sydney or Melbourne.
LOL you have been so optimistic about Tool in Australia.

Your optimism reaps rewards. You’ll probably get some demos of new material, too.

That’d be nice but I definitely won’t be holding my breath!
They’ll come down to promote their new album anyways right? I am so not keen for all the BDO kiddies at a Tool show…

Yeah, I imagine they’ll be back, probably not until 2012 would be my guess.
In Melbourne, Rod Laver Arena is taken up by the Australian Open until January 30. Not sure how long it takes to clean the stadium and ready it for a band, but even with two days to account for that, there is still room for a show on February 2nd and 3rd (Adelaide BDO on the 4th).
If those dates get booked by someone else, look to Sidney Myer Music Bowl:

Nothing booked yet for those dates.
Typical BMB. When you want some elaboration, he suddenly becomes all business.
For the record, September newsletter still not posted. Looking forward to at least a couple of tasty tidbits in this one. But I’ll most likely be disappointed.
yah, i suspect you will be dissapointed. Blair, to me, seems smug and aloof. and probably a bit jealous that this site is the place to be, and TA is an absolute waste of time at the moment. i expect the september newsletter somewhere around the third week of Oct, with no mention of anything relevant or interesting.
Forgive my ignorance, but are these “sideshows” just other concerts not scheduled as part of the big day out?

Correct.
I know about the Aus Open issues with Rod Laver but I think the show is better there than Music Bowl. Great sound at the Bowl I know, but GA is just a bit far away from the stage for mine
Forgive my ignorance, but are these “sideshows†just other concerts not scheduled as part of the big day out?
That’s right drakstar.  Traditionally bands playing the Big Day Out also play a couple of non-festival show, generally only in the larger cities such as Sydney and Melbourne. Back in 2007 Tool played all the Big Day Out dates, and also played one show in at the Sydney Entertainment Centre, and another at Melbourne’s Myer Music Bowl. The unfortunate thing for Melbourne fans is that despite the name the Music Bowl isn’t really a great venue unless you’re one of… Read more »
I just emailed Syd ent cent: “Hi,  I was wondering what date Tool will be playing at the Sydney Entertainment Centre in January 2011.  Am I correct in saying it is the 25th?  Kind regards, Jess” AND THEY RESPONDED WITH: ” We have quite a few dates pencilled in for January but nothing confirmed. I suggest that if you haven’t already, that you join up to ticketmaster on their website, as they send out alerts before shows go on sale. But,
Do you think it’s a good indicator?
But, Do you think it’s a good indicator?
Well, I’d be surprised if they didn’t play any side shows. But I also think that’s the stock answer from the entertainment centre staff for all band enquiries, so I wouldn’t read anything into it. Â I imagine they’d be pretty well trained in deflecting enquiries from fans trying to “beat the system”.

Yeah,
Metallica was a total pain! I have three groups of friends all going on three different nights!
The unfortunate thing for Melbourne fans is that despite the name the Music Bowl isn’t really a great venue unless you’re one of the lucky few that score seats at the front.  It’s also an outdoor venue, which as we all know unless done properly can have sound issues. I was at the Bowl in 2007, in the seats section. The view was excellent, and the sound was actually pretty good. However I did feel for those who were in GA at the back because the view would have been horrible and I’m not sure how well the sound… Read more »
Hisense Arena, but that capacity is limited to about 5000 from what I’m told
http://www.austadiums.com/stadiums/stadiums.php?id=130
This says:
Hisense Arena has fixed seating for 4,500, while raiseable, retractable and removable seating can enable a maximum capacity of 10,500 for Basketball, Tennis and concerts, while Cycling can cater for 4,500 fans.
I suspect that if they could get 10,500 in, Tool would play Hisense Arena. Just another option.
WE DO HAVE THE NEW AAMI STADIUM (BUILT FOR SOCCOR AND RUGBY). I BELIEVE THAT HOLDS ABOUT 30K, WHEN THE REMOVABLE SEATS AT EACH END ARE IN PLACE FOR SOCCOR. FOR RUGBY, THEY’RE REMOVED FOR END GOAL AREAS… SO THAT COULD PROBABLY BE DONE AT ONE END FOR A SHOW WITH MINIMAL CAPACITY LOSS OVERALL.

I DON’T KNOW… THEY EASILY SELL 15,000 – 20,000 AT ARENAS IN THE STATES, SO A ONE OFF 25,000 HERE DOESN’T SOUND UNREASONABLE

No need to yell dawg. Â I’m not saying they couldn’t sell the tickets, more that I don’t think they’d want to. Â Anyway, as I said chances are the venue is unavailable so it’s a moot point really.
They can come play in my lounge room if theres any issues with venues…
Maiden is playing at that Hisense Arena, and are playing the entertainment centre in Sydney…
Â
I think Hisense is a good bet.

That’s an unusual statement. Â If the sound and view was great, then what was the problem?
lol…i reaslied after i posted it…
Too far away from the band, too much wasted space by the seats and the gaps between the seats and the GA area.
While the view was great, im still a shortass and when someone talls gets in front of me its hard to see…
If i was able to do it again i would’ve went to the sydney show….

Well, for what it’s worth, Rage Against The Machine played Festival Hall in 2008 when they headlined, and Neil Young plaed the Music Bowl in 2009. Muse who played this year didn’t do any side shows (but they’re doing a proper tour in December).
Is festival hall a good venue? Would you recommend it over the sydney ent cent?

furnerburner – 11 hours ago » Is festival hall a good venue? Would you recommend it over the sydney ent cent? Festival Hall Blows (you can refer to my TCV review from last summer in the live, tonite, sold out thread). I’ve been to hundreds of shows all over the US and now in Oz and it is absolutely the worst venue I’ve ever been to (that’s including sound, drink policy, ventilation, security/entry policy, etc.). The only good thing about the place was the band that was performing. As far as tool playing there, unless they’re playing multiple nights, I’m… Read more »
Festival Hall sucks sweaty ass. At TCV i saw people walking out from the rail with wrinkles like they’d been in the bath for the duration… The Bowl would be awesome provided you can get in close, although the sound is definitely the best other than the Hamer Hall at the Arts Center (omg that would be bliss)
And Pete, Who are you trying to kid? Like you wouldn’t brave the dark dank cellar of Festival Hall to see Tool.
SERIOUSLY WOULD BE A TOUGH CALL… I’D HONESTLY RATHER SEE THEM AT BDO (OR ANY FESTIVAL FOR THAT MATTER) THEN AT FESTIVAL HALL
