The results are in….

The Big Day Out for 2011 have been announced and Tool are officially headlining the Big Day Out in 2011!  Other acts include Rammstein, Deftones, Grinderman, Iggy & The Stooges, Andrew WK and more.  Hopefully some more details will be available soon!

Here’s the announcement video:

Update: The Big Day Out dates are as below:

 • Friday 21st January – Auckland, New Zealand
 • Sunday 23rd January – Parklands, Gold Coast (tickets on sale October 7th with ticketmaster )
 • Wednesday 26th January – Showground, Sydney (tickets on sale October 6th with ticketmaster)
 • Sunday 30th January – Flemington Racecourse, Melbourne (on sale 8th October with ticketmaster)
 • Friday 4th February – Showground, Adelaide (on sale 8th October with ticketmaster )
 • Sunday 6th February – Claremont Showground, Perth (on sale 8th October with tickmaster)

No word on side shows, though I’d be betting we’ll get some details from Blair or the Big Day Out promoters soonish.  Going on the 2007 tour you can presume there will be one each in Sydney and Melbourne, and probably nowhere else.

Update 2:  The official blurb for Tool reads as follows:

The sky will blacken, the ground will shudder, the earth will open up and BIG DAY OUT will once again tremble in the presence of the awe-inspiring TOOL. “Primal, poignant, poetic and, as always, utterly powerful” (ARTISTdirect, July 2010). Touring Down Under for the first time in four years, vocalist Maynard James Keenan, guitarist Adam Jones, drummer Danny Carey and bassist Justin Chancellor will be fresh from the studio, where they have been slowly crafting a follow-up to 2006’s 10,000 Days. From Lateralus to Stinkfist, you know the music. But, backed by a video and laser light show unlike any other, TOOL live is also “the kind of visual experience you’ll probably never have again” (CHARTattack, August 2009). Unmatched in the world of dark, heavy rock, California’s TOOL have over 20 years scorched themselves a place as “one of the best live bands in history” (ARTISTdirect). Be blinded by their light at BIG DAY OUT 2011. (ALL SHOWS)

Not sure how accurate the part about them being fresh from the studio is.  I’ve heard things that suggest they are, but if this is the case then they’re playing things very close to their chest this time round.  Interesting press release anyway!

How long have you officially known this Hellboy? It must have been hard trying to keep in the news so thanks for the ‘subtle’ hints along the way…

Hopefully they play the same sort of setlist as they’ve been doing recently. More importantly though, bring on the Tool sideshow details. Ticketmaster and the Sydney Entertainment are gonna get some business!

Cheers

HOLY FUCK! I knew TOOL would headline but it still feels like a surprise. I am fucking ecstatic. Saw them 3 times in a week last tour in 2007, aiming for 5-6 times this tour. YEEEEAAAAAHHHHH!!!!!!!!!

Same, I thought they would have got some slots. Would be sick to have them and Tool both headlining together.
Awesome news anyhow. I hope they keep the momentum going and slip some new surprises into their set again.

Finally Hellboy gets TOOL!

You are in store for some awsome shows, the energy and magic the band had this summer reminded me of the 2001-2002 lataralus tour.

I could see TOOL debuting new material in Austrailia there  wouldn’t be as many retards trying to stream the new material to the internet

I hope they tour in the U.S. as well

Awesome news. Hoping for a side show in NZ, but not really expecting one.

Tool and Deftones!! Imagine them breaking out Passenger (maybe a mash up with Iggy maybe?!? lol).

Now I’m trying to figure out how I’m gonna pay for this.

Woohoo!!

that blurb suggests that they will be bringing their new additional screen stage set from the recent tour????

now, i just have to convince my wife that they are worthy of my presence at the Auckland BDO and one of the Aussie side shows (if there are any and if i can get tix)
Does anyone actually like Andrew WK?
Ah not particularly mate but I haven’t seen him live before, I might check it out depending on the timeslot to see what sort of antics he pulls off And on the Deftones, on one of the early announcements they said “– One of the 2011 acts will perform their classic album. PS they have played BDO before. – The 2011 act that will perform their classic album and have played BDO before IS NOT THE STOOGES!” – Could be them? I’d probably say that Around the Fur is more of… Read more »

FUCKING AYE RIGHT… TOOL AND DEFTONES… BEEN WAITING FIFTEEN YEARS TO SEE THESE TWO ON THE SAME BILL… NOT QUITE A DEFTONES/TOOL SHOW, BUT AS CLOSE AS I THINK I’LL GET. One of the 2011 acts will perform their classic album. PS they have played BDO before. PERSONALLY, IT’S SUCK IF THE TONES PLAYED AN OLD ALBUM STRAIGHT THRU SINCE I ABSOLUTELY LOVE DIAMOND EYES AND I’VE NOT SEEN ANY OF THE IT PERFORMED YET. SO, ILL BUY BDO TIX, BUT SADLY, IF BOTH DO SIDESHOWS AND I CAN GET TIX, I’LL MOST LIKELY HAVE TO GIVE UP THE BDO.… Read more »

Fkn gay.
I’m devo they’re playing at The Big Day Out. 99% of crew that go there these days are fashionista’s and girls with extra large sunglasses that don’t know shit about music. They just so go there because its the cool thing to do these days and so there and can post pictures of themselves looking cool at a big event on their Facebook.
Praying for a Sideshow. Hopefully a Brisbane one.
BTW – watch Rammstein crush everything. Probably the next best thing to watching TOOL live.

Shihad are playing the entire ‘general electric’ album, and primal scream are playing the entire ‘screamadelica’. Defones aren’t playing a ‘classic’ album. Thank god, a mixture of old and new please

Each to their own.  I think it’s the best lineup they’ve had since the 90s.  Then again I’m both a massive Tool fan and a massive Rammstein fan.

Ugh.. I wish Tool would be in the country same time as Soundwave I could dig on a Stinkfist with Buzz or a Lateralus with perhaps Josh Homme. I guess this is better than nothing 😉

Great news for NZ and Aus, getting Tool and Deftones at BDO. Shame that they’re doing this tour before the new album, I have a few fans back home in NZ that will be a bit gutted a full tour isn’t coming there way. A side show would be super unlikely, and would probably only be something small in Auckland, nothing like what we have seen on the recent tour (which is what the NZ fans deserve). Anyway, just hope when they finally come to London it is after a new album, and they play a couple nights! It will be worth… Read more »
