Billy Howerdel discusses A Perfect Circle reunion

There is a lengthy interview with Billy Howerdel on Ultimate Guitar where he talks about a range of A Perfect Circle related topics, including a few guitar tech type questions, as well as a little insight into Tool:

By the time you’ve recorded the Thirteenth Step album, has the writing process with Maynard become more efficient? Do you better understand the types of guitar ideas that he’ll respond to?

Kind of. On the first record, on Mer de Noms, for the most part I had a lot of those songs written and pretty well realized. They weren’t recorded really well but they were getting there by the time he started working on them. It was easy in the fact that he would just kind of sing to the arrangement that was there; we changed very little to accommodate Maynard. Working with Tool, he’s used to cracking the ultimate riddle of music; their music is extremely complex and I hear their demos sometimes and I hear what he puts to it and I think it’s amazing. I don’t know how he fits what he does over what I heard. Now that I’ve got some singing experience under my belt with Ashes Divide and writing and being the sole lyricist and writing melodies, I can’t imagine how he does that. I guess he just rises to the challenge but it’s not to be underestimated of how difficult that task is.

Thanks to Sam for the tip!

Great read!

Really interesting. Writing vocals is not just about the lyrics. It is so much more than that. Fitting the vocal melodies to the music is what it’s all about. I listened to Tool years before I had any clue wtf Maynard was saying, but I loved it anyway. Couldn’t care less. I loved the melodies and emotion!

That’s funny and nostalgic to me. I remember a concert in Texas in 1998, me singing along, loudly belting out “SKELETONS!” Of course now I realize the lyric is “scared as hell.” Also, I realize the show is much better if I let Maynard do the singing. I love watching the crowd get caught every-single-time in Stinkfist. Thanks for smile, royalred.

Thanks hillburn, there seems to be already 2 fakes posted on ebay.

If anyone has a extra poster and would like to be compensated for their hard work in getting the poster….I would happily pay you for your effort.
