Magnus posted in the Fourtheye forum a list of five Youtube videos from a previously unreleased (at least I haven’t seen it!) documentary with Danny Carey. Danny talks about a range of topics from his influences, to gear and touring. There’s also plenty of soundcheck footage included as well some cool live footage. Here’s part 1:
Danny Carey Documentary
And here’s the rest:
Part 2 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y1I1URFzUlM
There’s also a similar video (but shorter) with Adam Jones:
VERY SURPRISED IVE NEVER SEEN THESE BADASS RECORDINGS THEY SEEM WAY TO OLD FOR ME TO HAVE NEVER SEEN THEM
HAVE YOU SEEN THEM SOREAL
danny says some of the samples from “hooker with a penis” are from a hitting a dumpster with a sledgehammer
thats the shit
Very cool find. I’m also amazed this is the first I’ve heard/seen of this. From ’97, according to the YT comments. This is exactly the kind of shit I’d love to see compiled into special features on the fabled live TººL DVD project… someday… Thanks for pointing us there Magnus. I have always heard Bruford in Danny’s playing, and was not surprised that they have frequently cited KC as an influence. Just listen to Rosetta Stoned for one of the best examples. It’s like the evolution of Crimson… Seeing them together back on the Lateralus pre-seminal tour was one of… Read more »
I had seen the Adam one, or parts of it, but the Danny one was great… that footage was excellent and he seemed very open to the interviewer.
Brilliant find!

YES… WELCOME TO THE LAND OF CAPS LOCK ON BITCH!
Maynard going nuts at the start of part 3 just made my morning. What a great interview, really enjoyed it. I agree with Kittaan, wouldn’t it be awesome to see this compiled into a DVD boxset of sorts in a few years. Perhaps a DVD for each album could have special features section like this attached, and then live footage for that tour…dreams are free.
Anyway, very coooool.
it’s crazy how much that King Crimson song he played sounds like lateralus, now i see where the influence is….
Also, seeing Paul play bass in those clips made me curious as to what he’s doing and it turns out his busy making weak versions of Schism with a mediocre singer:

lol, Danny Carey is from outer space, ok maybe he’s not but I bet he thinks he is, yeeeaaaaow!
Those were pretty cool.
I enjoyed seeing Lisa Bonet in that last DC clip.
Adam, “The whole…..you know metal attitude….and the…you know, all these guys dressing like pirates.”
HAHAHAHAHA, classic.
Great videos ; thanks for sharing ! 😉
Don’t you think that the song of King Crimson (“Discipline”) – the one Danny Carey plays – sounds a little like “Third Eye” ?
And in the 2nd part (3min15 & 3min45 ), isn’t it Billy Howerdel ?
good shit, wish it was longer……whats the deal with the adam one spoke of above??

cashing in after you’re dead does seem to work pretty good.
i just hope youtube is still around so i can post a video of me crying, and discussing how its all been about more than rock and roll.
“tool changes my life, they completed me”, but no they really did
You had me at “cashing in after you’re dead”.
Discipline > Vicarious
Neurotica > Rosetta Stoned
I feel are good examples.
Just watching Danny listen to KC and analyze it made that doc worth watching. I’d love for them all to do something like that. Not talk about their music, but sit and wax on about the music that inspired them.
I definitely expect live albums or dvds or unreleased “things” to appear at some point in the future. It’ll be more like post-touring/releasing/band-split. There will be a point when it has to end, because they can’t go on forever. When there’s no more recording, no new releases, and no touring; when the Nard needs to buy that new tractor or destemmer, or Danny needs to tune up the Lamborghini, or Adam needs new art supplies, and Justin & Shelee have their second kid…and the residuals just aren’t paying the bills…they’ll just pull something out of the vault… Just hope I’m… Read more »

If I’m not mistaken, the Aenima demos floating around (stinkfist, eulogy, jimmy, pushit) all sound like Paul was still playing bass at the time they were recorded.
Paul has writing credits on some the songs from Aenima (Stinkfist, Eulogy, H, Pushit, Aenima), but that’s definitely Justin in these videos.
Review from Toolshed for the Newport Music Hall show (where these videos were taken):
http://toolshed.down.net/tour/fall96/9611151.html
In fact, all of the 1996 show reviews (on Toolshed: http://toolshed.down.net/tour/fall96/) indicate Justin was playing with the band at the time.
Finally, the reviews from the ’95 shows at Toolshed indicate Paul was still with the band and playing some of the songs that would end up on Aenima. So…that should be that.
odd that he leaves TOOL to create a band that tries to sound like TOOL. 😉

of course there are going to be simliarities in the music, afterall he was in TOOL, provided the bass for TOOL for years..co-wrote their songs..and must have liked the styles of the other guys to be in the band to begin with..so, its a matter of a little common sense.. that he may play with other guys with vaguely similiar styles. The story is he was “fired”‘ from holding up the recording process’s and he suffered from what Maynard called “Indie (record label)guilt”.. maybe that means he wasnt as concerned about the $$ as the other 3 guys..if that were… Read more »

Cmon guys, obviously he was talking about the Adam Jones video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f7A1cMfl0Xc which had been filmed in 1994 during recording of 2 Meter Sessions in Holland.
At about 46 seconds into the first video I think that’s me looking at the camera and then walking around Danny and itching my nose. In the background I see Billy Howerdel with a rack of guitars, and the guy Danny is talking to is Joe Slaby, who was Danny’s drum tech for most of the past 16 years, or so.
So junior, you must have very good stories to tell us. 😉
LOL…right on…(obviously, not so obvious). Thanks for clearing that up. : )

Yep and that means it will see the light of day in early 2011 with a sticker saying “NEW TOOL ALBUM 2011″ just like the previous records. reckon they will do the 3D thing in 12”??!! knock Blair all you want but yet again its a pretty funny newsletter the guy knows his stuff but obviously doesnt get news from the source quickly enough which to be fair does a disservice to him as an author. And that is definitely Justin in the videos!
