A conversation with Maynard James Keenan

Andrew McMillen from Australian magazine called Junior recently interviewed Maynard.   Maynard speaks a bout a range of issues including Tool, A Perfect Circle, Blood Into Wine and more. For those of us unable to pickup a copy of this magazine (it’s a free street press type thing) Andrew has published the full transcript here.  Here’s an excerpt:

I saw the Smashing Pumpkins recently. It felt like Billy [Corgan] was rushing to get some of his more well-known songs out of the way so he could play the new stuff. Can you relate to that kind of feeling?

No, no. I mean, especially since James Iha’s not in the band, I can’t really relate to the fact that Smashing Pumpkins are out there.

Nothing really notable as far as Tool or APC news goes, but a good insightful interview none the less.

Do you reflect much on your influence as an artist in the last 20 years? I don’t… Influence… What do you mean? The fact that you’ve inspired singers to sing, performers to perform, musicians to start bands. We have? I’m sure you have. Oh. I don’t know, I just assume people… really? Are you playing with me, Maynard? No, I – I thought it was a hypothetical. No, not at all. I have no idea. I guess the answer is no, I haven’t really reflected on that because I haven’t really… That’s nice to know that we’ve inspired people to… Read more »

. . . but to do three completely different sets and some of the songs you’ve never played live, and some of them you haven’t played in six or 10 years . . .

I agree, could it be possible that TOOL will be playing some new material or at least a new cover as well as some Undertow- or Ænima-era songs?

It will be the same setlist as the 2010 summer minitour, give or take maybe one song.

It was such a solid setlist though, they really nailed the patient and third eye and intolerance was awesome too.

They also played Right in Two and The Pot at some shows, so they might break them out.

And as for new material, I think you would be very, very lucky if they play the draft of a song they had been working on- more likely as Danny said, they might ‘tease a bit of new material in segues between songs’

They were playing some crazy segues between songs on the last tour, really drone-y, electronic soundscapes. It would be cool if those were used for songs on the new album. Or maybe used for a few filler tracks (more likely)!

the intro’s on Vicarious, Schism and The Patient during Summer 2010 sounded great. I listen to the SF show.

It’s funny Maynard said he can’t relate to the fact the pumpkins exist. haha

I’d say it’s likely we’ll get a taster of some material they’ve been working on. Possibly, as someone else suggested, just some segues between songs. I can’t see why they wouldn’t want to throw some of that stuff out there to see how it plays out live. I hope the new stuff is heavier and grittier than the last album. It was too polished. The Pot would be awesome to hear live. As would Jambi and Lateralus – two of my all time faves. I’m going to be out in the bleachers tho’ – way out in general admission. I’m… Read more »

i would love to see undertow live, but i don’t think maynard has the vocals for that song anymore more. i think he could still pull off part of me though. i am excited for some new bootlegs and a hopefully sweet setlist for all of you who get to go. 😉

(Sorry, it was just too difficult to resist)

When is Maynard going to start painting him self again? Dont we all want to see that? Such a mystical part of the act i miss. It reminded me of some native american shaman pushing him self into a hallucination or something, awesome. Also, does anyone know anything about maynards gas mask voice box? That thing is radical and i was just wondering why i have never heard anything?

That might be the same gas mask mentioned in the “Notes from the Crew” section on the Toolarmy site (September 2007 post).  It was an anti-smoke mask taken from the cargo plane that was transporting all of the bands gear.

I assume his Peter Gabriel tribute days are behind him… just like Wes Borland got sick of it!
