Has anyone here actually tried his wine? If so what’s it like?
I quite enjoy it myself, and I was a wine drinker before Maynard got on the scene so I’m trying not to be bias. My wife and I just polished off a bottle of his 2007 Primer Paso last weekend for our first anniversary.
good and strong. i have only had AZ stonghold though.
Awesome interview. Wine Spec is a very established, very respectable magazine and for them to send the senior editor to interview a winemaker, no matter who that is, that says something… @Liz, i’ve had only a little Chupacabra Kat and cj29 was kind enough to share back at the TOOL ’09 show in aTlanta. It was good however i really can’t say too much about the actual taste as it was a big party, there was beer, hot dogs, burgers, and ‘other’ things affecting taste that hot afternoon so as winetasting goes, it wasn’t a true wine tasting experience which… Read more »
My dad says Maynard’s wine is decent; he’s more impressed with the location of Maynard’s vineyard rather than the actual wine itself. I don’t drink wine myself, but my dad is a partner of a wine bar in town, he has managed restaurants and bars a long time ago and studied viticulture part-time when he went to college.
Why don’t they ever ask the burning question, will it ever be sold in a cask
Maynards getting a belly. We’ve seen Mullet Maynard, Clown Maynard, Geisha Maynard, Rev. Maynard, Cowboy Maynard and on the next tour Fat Maynard. I’m looking forward to it!
He should roll out on stage in one of those fat people wheelchairs with hydrolics and just play the show sitting down while the chair bounces to and fro, up and down. I can picture it now.
Awesomeness….
being from AZ, I have lots of chances to buy his wine and I drink it very regularly, and it is VERY good. My bias truly has nothing to do with my review on the juice. The shit is super tasty. The only one I can’t really get into is the Chupacabra. All of the Caduceus is superb. The AZ Stronghold is good as well
I thank you all for your opinions and comments. Now could someone please send me a bottle? I really feel I need to review it for myself. 🙂
It’s not sold in your neck of the woods I take it?

It’s not sold anywhere outside of the USA. Â In fact there’s several states in the US they don’t ship to either, due to licensing restrictions I believe.Â
“Maynards getting a belly”
pretty normal part of the human development, he is nearing 50. it becomes easier to put it on and harder to take it off. you will also have a belly at that age, even though you will deny it now.
i am not even 40 yet, but damn close, and it is becoming very difficult to keep the flat tummy. requires constant compromises. and the occasional “awww fuck it” ‘s…….are becoming more frequent.
^Hawaii being one of those states.
He had a belly back on the first APC tour I swear

I was mainly referring to his selfish attitude, a trait a majority of my jewish friends seem to have.
Oh boy, here we go
2006 Chupacabra is very good. I’ve also has the Tazi from AZ Stronghold but didn’t like it as well

Keenan sounds Irish to me.
I can’t keep up with all the variates he makes. What’s the most full bodied red he produces (like cab sauvignon or cab franc)?
Stuff at Trader Joe’s tends to be too young and full of sugar. Which can make for a nasty hangover.
@bonebroke – It’s always the preservatives. They’re the things that get you every time!
could be did not do too much reasearch. http://genealogy.familyeducation.com/surname-origin/keenan
somebody should bring him a bottle of vino, next time you VIP-it to a show!
would they let you bring it in? Maybe not, but if I threw down $$$ i sure as hell would try!
^cheers nice to see you buying Australian. Obviously you have a discerning palate.

Little Penguin!! Some of the best inexpensive wine you can buy here in the States.
Looks exactly like the guy from the needle drop

It would be great to get some of his wine in Australia, I personally would pay 100$ easy for a couple of bottles if it were possible.
couldn’t get it in New York when I last visited there.
I concur… not a high priest of the wine circuit or anything but I tend to buy any and all reds from those two spots since I visited Adelaide 18 months ago… very impressed with the drink available via Barossa
That’s a ridiculous price to pay for basically a fruit bomb, maybe in 10 years when he knows what he’s doing a bit better and understands his yield

I’ve got a 400 dollar bottle of Barossa Valley Colonial Estate “Exile” sitting in the cupboard… One day I’ll make a meal worthy of it.
Go a little further downunder and you can find some pretty good red, and probably the best white wine in the world (if that’s your cup of tea)…. good old in NZ, it’s pretty much the only thing we produce these days, that and All Blacks (which isn’t a good combo if you put them together). I have spent sometime in Aus though and really enjoyed reds from the Barossa Valley, it was something about the food and surroundings which seem to make it taste all the better when you are there. That interview did crack me up, Maynard is… Read more »

That was pretty funny.Â
yeah, i’m not into white wines yet. I guess Maynard makes them, uh? Most i ever paid for a bottle was $25 for that Emigre. It probably should have been opened by now. I think $25 is the max I could pay for a bottle having had enough good ones that cost less. Somebody in Europe bought a 1810 bottle of white for 6 figures the other day. If I ever see a Barossa Valley vino in the stores, I will get it (assuming it’s not too pricey). You can get good vino for $10 if you try. TJ’s even… Read more »

I think he made a comment in some wine interview about having Italian ancestry. He said one of his grandfathers was a winemaker? Something like that.
His wines are actually pretty good, but priced a bit high for the actual product IMO.  I guess it’s understandable that his Caduceus wines are priced where they are since it’s more or less a boutique winery, but his AZ Stronghold stuff should be more around $15 as opposed to $20 a bottle. I’m still sitting on an ’04 bottle of the Nagual Del Sensei and couple of bottles I had signed at Whole Foods a couple of years ago.  I liked the Primer Paso, but the Nagual de la Naga has been my favorite out of the Caduceus wines… Read more »

thanks for the tip. I will keep my eyes peeled here in the Bay Area.
cheers!
To my understanding, Wine Spectator is not respected what-so-ever by any serious wine connoisseur. Its considered lowest common denominator and a blight on those who know their craft. They have to pander to the magazine only because it is “popular”.  I know nothing, but this is what I’ve been told.Â
