I’m extremely doubtful this is the case, but in the last few days a Twitter account called BigDayOutSpy has been leaking the alleged lineup for the 2012 Big Day Out. Acts so far have been somewhat interesting, without being amazing until this post earlier this evening:
A Perfect Circle are the other Green/Converse stage headliner at Big Day Out!
So far, I found the leaks believable, but to be honest I’m not sure I can see A Perfect Circle playing the Big Day Out next year. Headlining the small stage sounds tantalising though (however it would be annoying if the rumoured Pearl Jam main stage headliner were true).
Definitely file in the “I’ll believe it when I see it confirmed†category…
For the record, the Big Day Out Spy alleges the following lineup (in no particular order):
- The Killers
- SOAD
- A Perfect Circle
- Underworld
- Chase and Status
- Florence and the Machine
- Opeth
- Cake
- The Decemberists
- Biffy Clyro
- Cut Copy
- Boy and Bear
- Karnivool
- Architecture in Helsinki
- Josh Pyke
- OFWGKTA
- The Vaccines
Other rumours suggest Pearl Jam will headline, and Kasabian & My Chemical Romance will also play.
Update: A Perfect Circle on their Facebook page this morning mentioned “That’s unfortunately not true” so I guess this myth is pretty much busted.
Can’t imagine APC would be headlining BDO. According to the APC website Billy will be working on new music and touring for Ashes Divide. Plus you have to figure Maynard will be touring with Puscifer in November/December. I suspect Tool will be close to recording by January/February of next year. Maynard has had his fun with his side projects. Danny has done his Volto thing, Adam with his WWE foray and Justin with M.T. Void and an endless supply of beer. 2012 is a Tool year. I think for the most part the fan base has been way more relaxed… Read more »
Karnivool is better than EVERY other band on that list. They deserve way more credit…definitely my second favorite to Tool. This list might not be confirmed, but I’m sure they will be there.
system of a down? theyre back together?

What about Opeth? They’re up there with the best of them.
system of a down? theyre back together?
They had some European festival tour dates this summer, as well as some latin american concerts not even a month ago i think.
A Perfect Circle have advised via their Facebook page that this is ‘unfortunately not true’….
I’ve been keeping close tabs on BDOS, but Opeth had me suspicious (But intrigued)
If it’s a fake, it’s been done VERY well, in particular picking bands mostly likely to play BDO but without conflicting dates in their tour schedules.
I wonder if perhaps some lines have been crossed and it’s AD that’s on the BDO, not APC.
Or more likely it’s just some elaborate troll.
They are the best of them. I love APC but they are not in the same league as Opeth.
Big Day Out Spy has updated: A Perfect Circle were one of the bands that stuck out to me as unexpected on my list of bands when I first received it. The talk amongst the office echoed my doubts. Therefore I decided to leave them, along with some other unexpected bookings, until one of the final announcements just in case there had been changes. They were the band I was planning on revealing last night, however I thought they were one of the most likely to pull out as they have finished touring for a while now. As I mentioned… Read more »

backpedaling like crazy now…Â
Definitely smells like that…Â

(Opeth is more the band that sticks out like a sore thumb… BDO is not averse to having heavier acts on the bill – See Mastodon – But Opeth?)

It would come as no surprise if some of the acts mentioned by this guy do end up on the Big Day Out. Â I see no reason why Opeth can’t be on it, though if they were to play a festival (and I doubt many of their fans want this) then Soundwave would be a better fit.Â
The idea of seeing Opeth in the hot afternoon sun at BDO? Does not appeal. Granted, I’m not as in to them as I was 7 or 8 years ago – Although the new album is amazing, but only because I’m a sucker for 70’s prog – but if they were to do a festival, SW would make more sense (AJ has already said they won’t be on SW because “They are making their own plans”…) Either way. unless even IF this guy is legit, unless the makeup band is AD, then the relevance to this site just dropped off… Read more »
That last sentence doesn’t even make sense. I need a fucking coffee.
Opeth isn’t particularly heavy. Meshuggah is heavy.

Well if you want go down that whole “this music is heavier than that/my penis is bigger than yours” path…Â
You are right. My bad.
I am not saying one band is better than the other. Two extremely different approaches. Two of my favorite bands.
Mog – To the general public, your average BDO punter, Opeth are indeed heavy.
Agreed. Wasn’t putting Opeth down they are one of the greatest bands of all time (in any genre)
(People were complaining about the APC rumor – “Another heavy band!?!?!” for example…)
Â
Â
Really? Wow that is crazy. I thought BDO showcased heavier bands?
Speaking of BDO, you guys got one of the best Tool setlists last year. Third Eye, Right in Two, You Lied, lucky bastids.

Big Day Out seems to have the same sort of mix of styles that Coachella might have, for example…

…And last year, with Tool, Deftones, Rammstein, Grinderman and Iggy, there was a lot of people complaining that there as too much “macho” on the bill:

Anyone rate Maynard brining out Pucifer for BDO?
BDO usually looks after side-projects of resident headliners pretty well.

They do, I but imagine that’d be pretty unlikely. Â Not really sure it’d be the right venue or audience for such a show (presuming the new tour follows a similar theme to the last one).Â
For whoever still cares, BDOS just “leaked” Radiohead as the headliner.Â
For whoever still cares, BDOS just “leaked” Radiohead as the headliner.
Well I guess it’s somewhat plausable, as I think that was rumoured earlier this year. Still, this guy has definitely gone for the “benefit of the doubt” category to the ‘I’ll believe it when I see it” one.
Aye. But yes, FasterLouder was reporting Radiohead rumors for early 2012 a few months ago. Here’s hoping.Â
Â
As much as I love Pearl Jam I’d be very happy to see Radiohead headline simply because I’ve never seen them. I’ve never really listen to much (OK Computer being the exception) and didn’t get past the single off their new album because I found that track rather tedious but still I reckon they would put on a good show.
As for Puscifer at BDO, I agree with Hellboy probably not the crowd. From what the US natives say they are more a cabaret type act anyway.
^yoda think more a ‘small night in’ puscifer is
Shenanigians on the whole thing.
Opeth announce a December tour, so they sure as hell won’t be on the BDO.

Then I believe they are doing a European/UK tour as well. All in support of their new album ‘Heritage’. And Opeth has already played many festivals this year. Opeth isn’t a festival band, and I don’t think Tool is a very good festival band either. All of Opeth’s songs are like 10+ minutes, and require a pretty lengthy set to do a proper show.  And… Read more »

Well the boiler room in Adelaide was just a large tent, so it was more or less like just another side stage. Â Battles were good back in 2008 (or whatever year it was they played last).
Still, I’m not prepared to accept anything that guy has “leaked” at this stage…Â
Lucidiot – 18 hours ago » And on a second note. I am extremely disappointed in Opeth’s new album. This is coming from a die hard Opeth fan. I like 70′s prog, and not to say Opeth did not do a good job capturing that era in this album, it just doesn’t go well. Heritage is Opeth completely devoid of everything that makes Opeth stand out and everything that makes them special and amazing. Ah, shit. I was quite looking forward to hearing it. Yes I actually do not like that tent set up. The boiler room should be just that a dark place so the glow sticks work.lol
Yes I saw them that year too (whatever it was) but I’d reckon that they would be a fairly reasonable bet for a slot even if the guy that guesses everyone will be playing BDO has named them…

Chris Cornell, Foo Fighters and Grinderman tickets in hand (Russian Circles Sunday night). Battles and Mark Of Cain a pretty good bet and we still don’t know headliners for BDO and Soundwave not to mention all the in betweens.
I’m liking my summer line up already. You know it’s easy to windge about what we do miss out on (Australia and then Adelaide) but really we do get lots of great stuff and more than most people can keep up with.
