The latest Puscifer EP Donkey Punch the Night is now streaming in full on the Spin website, and also features an accompanying interview with Maynard:
The song “Dear Brother” is dedicated to several people who passed away, including the Beastie Boys’ Adam Yauch. Is that who you were thinking of?
Well, you know the Beastie Boys gentleman, that was a sad day when I got that news. It also pays tribute to our friend Edward Willie, Jr. from Uncle Scratch’s Gospel Revival — they’re a band who opened up for us, out of Ohio in the area where I was born. And Ray Beckwith was an Australian winemaker, who, in a way, reinvented the wheel in winemaking. He discovered the relationship between pH and acid balance in wines. They really didn’t take Australian wine too seriously before him. What are your fondest memories of MCA?
I actually never met him. I just really enjoyed the music. When their first record came out, I was definitely a fan. To watch them progress and evolve in the way that they did from their first album until their last, it was quite inspirational to watch their personal transformation. It’s very unfortunate he didn’t make it to the next level.
A relatively short but interesting interview, however don’t expect much to be said about Tool or APC.
Also, for those of you considering seeing Puscifer in Australia, note that the Brisbane show has sold out, and the Melbourne and Sydney shows are expected to shortly.
Just listened to a little bit of Donkey Punch…man, Maynard uses a shitload of auto-tune nowadays.
that’s really disappointing that they had to pull the Bohemian Rhapsody mix
Yeah, that Bohemian Rhapsody cover was pretty fucking terrible. I don’t understand the point of it– uninspired bullshit.
“SPIN Magazine wasn’t there to interview me when I got accepted to West Point. Or when I won a medal at regionals at state cross-country. You weren’t there for that. No one knows about it.”
Poe’s law
At first, the Bohemian Rhapsody cover sounded off to me. The original is amazing, and, initially, this one did not seem to do it justice, but it is sounding better with each listen. It just took some getting used to, just like any other music. Call me a fanboi, but i honestly enjoy it.
I can see why people wouldn’t like this version, but if you didn’t like the original then you’re probably homophobic…
It’s just a song that doesn’t need to be covered. What song does? Preferably something obscure that we may not have otherwise heard…
No one was there to interview Maynard when he got accepted to West Point or won a cross country medal because 1) No one gives a fuck and 2) Both of those things are gay. Dude needs to get over himself, it appears he still hasn’t.
So i guess Tool shouldn’t have covered “No Quarter” then? Oh, but they’re Tool, so it’s okay…
I think I should write a biography, I won a cross country medal once
bit unfair. he aint freddie mercury but MJK is still just about the best singer alive…
Was singing “Bohemian Rhapsody” difficult?
Yeah, he’s out of my range. Some of those notes, I can’t even get to.
“SO WHY THE FUCK DID YOU EVEN BOTHER WITH THE SONG AT ALL”.
Maybe because it was fun you sad case.
Yeah i think they wanted to do bohemian as close to the original as possible. That was the whole point. On that account, they did a great job. The guitars and drums got similar tones and everything. Purely from a musical standpoint, its an accomplishment. Whether one likes it or cares to listen to it, is another matter entirely. Its easy to be critical and shit on music after one listen. I do it all the time. Other times music grows and you and may need to incubate awhile. This instant negativity is just too easy and boring, definitely more… Read more »
As far as Tool covering No Quarter…yea it didn’t need to be done. But it does actually kick ass, so that helps. This Queen cover by Puscifer sucks and Puscifer isn’t a real band – it’s hired guns carrying out Maynard’s half-baked ideas.
EXCUSE ME
you take this shit way too seriously, Tyson
eff yeah! DGAF all the way, bro. right on!
Lots of hate going on here. Personally, I like the remake of BR so I suppose that would make me a fanboi to some people on here. Not exactly critical thinkers, IMO.
I liked the rest of the songs even though I was hoping that Balls To the Wall would have more… balls.
People are so quick to judge. They give something one listen and immediately decide it sucks without giving it another chance. I don’t see why they even bothered listening to DONKEY PUNCH THE NIGHT at all; most of them already had their mind made up about it since it was announced. Definitely not critical thinkers.
Crow, i was just pointing out that certain people are negatively biased against anything Puscifer does, no matter what. They hear it once, pass judgement and decide never to listen to it EVER again because it didn’t dazzle them from that one frivolous listen. I feel bad for these people; they are missing out on a lot of spectacular music that really just takes a little effort to comprehend the subtleties that make it truly beautiful. 90 percent of the time i need to let music soak in before i can form an honest opinion. This is a process that… Read more »
Well those are their two most accessible releases. I agree that most people would think generally think of it as good music, but i guarantee it didn’t take one listen to fully realize that.
Breathe, Dear Brother and Balls to the Wall are all good IMO. [face_shrug]
@children, you are way off-base. Puscifer/Maynard isn’t good anymore – people need to face this fact. No matter how great an artist’ track record is (Fuck! Look at Metallica with those amazing early albums) at some point they get old, wealthy, lose touch or all three at once and jump the shark.
Some of you just need to accept that this is where Maynard is in his career at this point. He’s 48 years old and he kind of just sucks now.
By that logic you won’t like the new Tool album. Why waste your time here?
some people just have poor taste in music i guess
So hostile, Mog. Just because i’m not bitter and hateful like you, doesn’t mean that we can’t be friends.
or maybe it does
I rarely post my opinion but decided to pipe up after listening to DPTN tonight. What I have heard feels so incomplete this go around. Can you even call it an EP? I guess so, but when there are mostly covers, remixes, and only, say, two new songs to it, you gotta feel bad for the people who pre-ordered the god-damn thing. What is with the song Breathe? I try so hard not to criticize Puscifer’s creative work because usually it only takes a day or two to feel in tune with the entire album, EP, etc. and fall in… Read more »
USERNAME, I honestly, HONESTLY couldn’t of said that any better myself… These serious “TOOL fans” really need to take a fucking hint and lighten up. Puscifer isn’t meant to be this marvel of depth and spirituality; it’s partly meant to be a joke. That is obviously evident from the title “DONKEY PUNCH THE NIGHT” along with the artwork, with the words “PUSCIFER” scribbled on like a child. The name Puscifer is comically genius in itself, the absolutely perfect pun. It’s fucking hilarious. The joke is on you if you don’t get it. No, Puscifer is no TOOL, but what else… Read more »
