The Marc Maron interview with Maynard is now online, and surprisingly features some good news for Tool fans:
I’m gonna stop by the rehearsal space today in theory, I’ve been beating them up going please give me music. In theory they have a cd for me today so I can listen to some jams and we can get this thing going.
In other discussion:
- Maynard seems quite aware that some fans think he hates Tool.
- Tool having a frontman doesn’t make sense – he sees it more as a team.
- He talks about growing up in michigan with his father, and various family relationships including mother and step-father.
- Briefly discusses his autobiography.
- Talks about his experiences in the military, and decision to not go to West Point.
- Discusses various bands and art projects worked on in Michigan.
- Doesn’t want to do a Joni Mitchell cover – “I’ve already got enough shit for doing covers”.
- Discusses relationship with Bill Hicks.
- Talks about making wines in Arizona.
Here’s the good news for those of you who don’t care about the non-Tool details.
Looks like it’s Tool Time for Tim Allen!
Fuck! I mean Maynard.
I’ve lurked for years on here. This news has prompted my first post ever. Wouldn’t surprise me if there were news stories coming out in the next few days: “Tool fanboys all around the world have been checking themselves into psych wards after hearing a new interview with the lead singer, who in what can only be described as a ‘bizarre occurrence’ happily answered a question regarding the long awaited next album by the band. The diminutive singer showed excitement and a strong urge to begin his part of the process in the creation of the next album. Fans were… Read more »
Nice assessment, Maynerd, I think that hits it on the head. Love the clip & how it begins with laughing cuz you think it’s going to be a joke about all the Tool questions, but a HAPPY reply!
Yay!
Awesome interview, and then the bit at the end made my day…although i’ve learned not to hold my breath I am definitely smiling!
The ending was kinda funny too. The interviewer pauses, probably freaked out at the giant scoop he’s just gotten, then decides not to push his luck any further, and just utters the “Thanks Maynard”.
I registered for this site so that I could point out that in the interview, Maron asks MJK how old he is and he says, “I’ll be 49 next month” indicating that this interview was actually recorded in march 2012. I’ve listened to a few of these WTF podcasts but I never thought about what the turnaround time for the interviews is. I could be wrong. Don’t see why Maynard would lie about that though, especially since all you have to do is Google his name and it’s right there on the little mini bio thing.
Marc mentioned on his twitter page that is was recorded some time ago. Not sure why it’s been held back so long, but it is good news to think that Maynard has potentially had his hands on the music for a few months now. Combined with what I’ve heard that Maynard is very quick at writing lyrics, it’d almost be safe to say the album is very close to being ready for recording.
This weird then. If this interview was done in March 2012 then the new album could most likely be completed.
‘IF’ that is the case then it could explain why Adam has been uploading videos of Tool rehearsing ‘Lateralus’, as in rehearsing the song for an upcoming tour to promote the new album which could drop in a few months?
Actually, scratch my last comment. I see he turned 49 this year…
Wow you’re right. I fail at math. Damn.
this is very good news indeed.
Great podcast – wasn’t expecting that.
The bit at the end was great to hear. Sounded like some nice candid enthusiasm for Tool that you don’t hear much of from him.
For once, a maynard interview that didn’t stir up a single post of hate. Let’s see how long we can keep it going. Also, the light at the end of the tunnel… I see it and it is beautiful.
Interview gets better as it goes on and is surprisingly candid. Worth the listen.
Is this interview curve ball related?
I wouldn’t have thought so.
ya, first time maynards been this open in an interview in a loong time! its nice to see for sure! im surprised no one has commented on a certain word he used at the end when talking about tool “im stopping by the rehearsel space in theory” wtf does ‘in theory’ mean ? did he or not ? im not going to conspiracy out on that nor make a big deal about or anything cause it isnt worth it in 2013 but it did make me wonder what that was all about.
good interview except the in theory part 🙂
slight correction, he meant in theory to saying ‘send me music, send me music’ and then the in theory part about the cd. i suppose he means its ‘in theory’ cause he isnt sure what those sounds will be like etc etc. still. its an odd choice of words to use and makes it a bit hard to understand. mr elusive!
the “in theory” means he’s supposed to get the cd, but maybe they haven’t finished recording it yet, because they got sick or they’re rewriting or something… that’s what the “in theory” means.
What’s even more confusing about the time frame of when this was recorded is he mentions puscifer’s remix album
maybe it wasnt recorded back in April? ah well. like a lot of the newsletters im not going to put much stock or thought into ‘when was it?’ blah blah. he was talking about TOOL for once and sounded like he was really wanting to get on with it and thats a really good thing to hear so the rest is all whatever at the end of the day! things are looking good!
Yeah it occurs to me that he’s already mentioned about jamming with the band near the start of the year..
So your saying there’s a chance!….
Really good interview. Comedians seem to have a way of chatting and interviewing Maynard that makes him laugh and open up it seems. To be honest, i see why the guy doesnt say much about tool. What is there to say? Look how long the guys been waiting.
What if a bunch of interviews are mixed up in terms of when they were released… What if Danny’s last interview, stating that the record will come out in 2014 was recorded before the one where he insinuated to a 2013 release see e..? Most likely ludicrous.
