I really liked 10,000 Days. While the album seemed to disappoint some, personally I wasn’t. I don’t think it’s quite as solid as Lateralus and Aenema are, but it’s a great album and a worth inclusion in Tool‘s discography. When I first started putting my list together I had three entries from the album, and there quite easily could have been four.
Though Right In Two, Rosetta Stoned and Wings For Marie/10,000 Days did miss out, Jambi made the cut. When the band spoke about writing for the album, they often dropped Swedish metal band Meshuggah as an influence, and while the rest of the album didn’t really show that influence too much, Jambi certainly did to my ears. The chugging riffs and the polyrythmic drumming pretty much summed up my expectations for this album.
While vocally it’s not a challenging track for Maynard, lyrically I found it to be quite interesting. Deep in symbology, and seemingly pointing to his experiences as a father, they seemed to ring true with me.
And of course then there is the guitar solo. Taking advantage of a Heil Talk Box, Adam created one of his most unique solo proving that while he may not be a technical master of the guitar, he certainly is no slouch when it comes to adding texture and colour to his work.
I skip this song 98% of the time. I can’t get into it – that talking box kills it for me.
I couldnt skip the song if I wanted to its beyond amazing!
“if i though id loose you for just one day”
@ Doors, different strokes for different folks, i suppose 🙂
The talkbox section made that song for me. Balls to the wall, that bit is. Kind of refreshing in a weird way…
Also, I very much agree with your first paragraph, hellboy.
ya, Jambi is one of the stronger tracks on 10k. the talk box annoyed me at first but once i saw it live i liked it on the album too. very common for that to happen i find! just like rosetta stoned i thought sucked at first but when i saw it live i ‘got it’ and love that tune now. i still think 10k isnt that great of an album though, its like a half album to me still. always felt that way. i hope the next one is better !!! aenima and lateralus are the best. musically i… Read more »
I meant to throw Rosetta and Third Eye on my list, but forgot to. Should’ve given this one a better chance as I definitely think it’s one of their essentials.
Reflection
Lateralus
Third eye
The patient
Stinkfist
46&2
H
The grudge
Flood
Rosetta stoned
Probably one of the greatest endings to any song ever written can be found in Jambi.
Great to play on guitar.
Jambi is the best song for me off 10k days, followed closely by wings for Marie pt.2
The Jambi sound was the logical progression I was hoping for to follow Lateralus. Really disappointed me that the rest of the album didnt have that ‘feel’.
JAMBI is an amazing Tool track. There is so much going on in the song that is not obvious at first….it was my LEAST favorite song during the first few months of the album being released, but now its one of the most enjoyable. That’s Tool for ya.
right in two sounds like a b side off lateralus to me. and the pot is better live but that tune is too poppy until it gets crazier near the middle end part on the album. im def one that thinks 10k kinda isnt that great for sure. lateralus is tool at their finest to me! and aenima is pretty damn close too!
