Adam Jones Q&A session recording

Kanaduh has delivered more love for us, this time in the form or a recording of the recent San Francisco Adam Jones VIP Q&A session. For your enjoyment:

Update: Clip has been removed at the bands request.

Note that due to Nine Inch Nails and Queens Of The Stone Age commitments I haven’t listened to this yet!

So they’ve been dealing with a law suit for 7 years? and they had 3 medical problems, one of which was “really fucked up” and scary? Huh. I wonder what that was about and why it’s not something they talk about, because if I was in Tool I’d be happy to talk about anything I could use as an excuse for why the new album isn’t out yet. Was awesome to hear him talk about guitar techniques and time signatures tho. For the “row row row your boat” part I was hoping he was going to play 46and 2, the… Read more »

Kanaduh … thanks! Adam seems to be a cool guy. I liked when he started to play Jambi, the main riff sounded really powerful. Also it seems we have to accept that the new album will be done,,,when it’s done… let’s move on people, let’s try to enjoy other bands other music until these people give us something to appreciate. 🙂

i would’ve asked him about problem 8, the lack of any changes to their website design since 2000, the pot video, no less than 9 questions about the new album, where he bought that shirt, and whether the band addresses maynard as ‘maynard’ or ‘jim’ in private or casual situations (always wondered about that)

Is anyone else happy that this audio was taken down? As much as I love new information and insight from the band directly, there is just something wrong about secretly recording this. It just feels dirty. Many people paid good money for this exclusive experience. Recording a live show is one thing, but secretly recording an individual speaking for two hours at an event that was intended as an exclusive VIP experience, well, that is another.

I’m glad. I was at there. I’m not glad because I paid $ and others didnt though. I’m glad because this was really something special that Adam and the band supported. He even brought the creatures from schism and parabola vids and put them on display. Not roped off and don’t touch nonsense either….it was please be careful they’re important to me but they’re yours too attitude. The experience was amazing. There were some things that sucked like waiting around all day and since it was GA show we didn’t get VIP seating although we were first choice of seats.… Read more »

Oh so we all got to meet Adam, have posters signed by him, hold his guitar, ask him specific questions whenever we were so inclined, see upclose and in person pieces from the videos? This was just audio of what happened at one session. I dont think it should spoil the experience of those who were there and paid for it. Speaking as someone who has been dodged by the band’s tours since 2009, if they came any near chicago next year and did one of these VIP q+a’s, based on hearing this, i’d plunk down the money to be… Read more »

I’m actually really glad I got to hear it but I do kind of feel guilty for listening to it. One person can really ruin things for everyone else. This undoubtedly pissed them off. They probably even considered not doing this anymore… You can bet there will be pat downs now.
This still makes me want to buy a VIP pass next time they come around. I couldn’t make it to this round of shows because they directly followed my return from a Hawaii trip and a Skinny Puppy show… I was tapped out on time and money.

Uzi Peretz

If that was directed at me, just to be clear, I am not suggesting recording ruined my experience in any way. Also I’m not saying I haven’t watched or listened or that other people should or shouldn’t record. I especially love the early recordings of tool and am thankful that stuff is available. This was a bit different though, it was a personal conversation and to tape and reproduce it did feel a bit “dirty” as the OP suggested band I responded too. I shared some of my experience for those that didn’t go, get to listen to the recording… Read more »

I’m a total hypocrite for agreeing that it was kinda wrong because I listened to the whole fucking thing. But yeah, recording & leaking a soundcheck performance is one thing. This Q&A just seems like something that should be kept for the attendees though, outside of stories from the people who were there. I had a feeling the band would find out and request it be removed, and sure enough. Listening to it did give me the impression that a VIP pass has more value than I thought, though. The time with Adam sounds pretty cool. Do they do will… Read more »

I was concerned when they were posted. We all know how strict TOOL is about things & I was afraid that this breach of trust (yes that’s what it was) would fuck it up for us in the future. This is the first time they have every offered any kind of VIP experience with them.

I was there for the SF 3/11 VIP experience & will cherish it forever. I think it was well worth the money for the rabid fan like myself.

I am glad it was taken down. Not sure what Kanaduh role is on Toolshed. I take he has a solid understanding and knowledge of Tool. For him to record q&a, which was made clear by the band that recordings and photos were not allowed, was blatant disregard and lack of respect to Adam and Tool. It may have been different if it was Joe Blow who nobody knows that broke the rules; but for someone as recognizable on Tool forums as Kanaduh to do it, and then Post it under his user name, is hard for me to fathom.… Read more »

Not sure if anyone has brought this fact up yet: I went to the Cedar Park VIP. The first thing they did after getting us in the door was take our cell phones away from us. We had to write our names on a piece of paper and wrap it around the phone and put the phone in a box until they were ready for us to have them back. When Adam came in and started talking to us, he explained that the reason they took our phones from us was because someone recorded a previous VIP session and posted… Read more »

Wow, that’s a little overboard I think. In retrospect, perhaps it would have been better for this clip to have made it’s rounds after this tour was over. At least then, those that paid for the VIP q&a and sound check wouldn’t have any possibility of feeling like they wasted their money because they could have just listened to this recording for free. Again, it is just audio which can’t replace the experience of actually being there. You can’t hear what Adam’s body language was, etc. Anyway, as a fan, I think it’s wonderful that a recording like this exists.… Read more »

aloha. for the record, out of almost 40 concerts I have attended, I have never even taken a cell phone photo of the stage, let alone record audio/video of the concerts. I try to enjoy the shows instead of fiddling with an electronic device – tool shows are rare and always an amazing experience – I don’t want to waste it staring at my phone. with that being said, I spent many hours (like others on this forum) at home watching many of the youtube videos posted of previous songs/shows. I listened to most of it and really don’t think it’s a big deal that it was shared. Nothing really earth shattering and Adam just seems like a good bro. I think if anything, it’s good material for us fans that haven’t had anything outside of the occasional tour stop in years. I’d still shell out the $500 if they are in my neck of the woods. I’m sure 50% of the people there with a smartphone were recording it anyhow. The band asked to take it down. It’s down (though I’m sure it will resurface again). Don’t shoot the… Read more »

The reason they took our cellphones was because of THIS recording. Adam explained that if everyone was recording or filming the session he would not be himself. He wanted to be vulnerable for the people that were in the VIP session with him. He was very nervous to begin with and i think if he knew he was being recorded it would not have been the same.

The band makes fucking millions off the VIP and this tour and heaven forbid the fans want to know what was said during a Q&A and it’s thaaat disrespectful that they should be called out for it? seriously is Adam like a prophet or something what makes his words so special and unique that mere people cannot listen to him talk I seem to recall the webcast when Salival came out and the webcast when Lateralus came out and both of those were in chat format and the WHOLE band answered questions from fans. And I’d say most big Tool fans have MP3’s of both those fan Q&A’s in circulation and online. Hah, you guys really don’t make much sense to me sometimes, I’m sorry. 🙂 (i swear i’m not trying to troll with this comment) While I’m happy the recording exists; I’m not sure I understand why anyone should have any resentment toward Adam or the band for their request for this to be taken down. Why don’t we just hate on neither party.

Kanaduh took a recording. People liked it. Maybe against Adam’s wishes, but I can’t imagine he’s losing sleep over it & it made people happy.

Adam didn’t want to be recorded. If your friend asked you not to record them while you were sitting around talking, would you think that was rude? It’s just a respect thing, surely its not pretentious (or high horse or whatever) to expect friendly courtesy.

Adam isn’t your friend. sorry… you’re deluded if you think so. you’re a customer. is buyers remorse kicking in with anyone who shelled out the cash for the VIP? I didn’t listen to the file before it was taken down. nearest I could gather is it’s the same hodgepodge of excuses the band is known for. is the lawsuit thing the one with cam? I thought that it was over and done but noticed cam’s wife left a fairly critical message of Adam on one of his photos on IG.. she didn’t paint a pretty picture of the exalted Adam…..

It seems to me like a lot of people suffer ego damage as a result of the band not behaving in the way they want. I think its a testament to how profound an impact their music has had on us that people have such strong emotional reactions to stuff band members do. i stopped following him shortly thereafter so I don’t know how to find it. it was about a month ago I think. the wifey was upset and said (paraphrasing)… no matter how much they’ve tried, they just can’t get away from tool. and how much misery it had caused the family. she brought up their kids and explained how damaging the trial was to them. she kept reinforcing the damage caused by the guitarist and his actions. like I said… it was ugly. and raw. and the hurt she described struck me as sincere and heartfelt.

To answer the question about the lawsuit.
In their current contract there is no mention about releasing songs on iTunes. So the band says that means, “no”, while their label thinks they can. Adam said they have been arguing / in litigation over it for years.
The Cam (Happy Pencil guy) lawsuit and Ted Gardner ( former manager) have been settled.

I assume you mean why don’t they change much from one tour to the next, rather than from one show to the next during any given tour. The setlists are chosen by maynard, that much is fact. I think it’s reasonable to say that most of his decision process revolves around what he can physically sing after 20 years of touring. But I’d hazard a guess that part of it is a mental/emotional choice. What songs he can connect with. That’s partial speculation on my part because it would make sense to me. But he and others in or supporting… Read more »

Jesus Christ! This thread has contained such bitching, I’m saddened by it. Regarding the VIP packages, If I was 17 years old again and these were offered back then when they toured in 1997, I would have done ANYTHING to get the money to have been there to be able to meet Adam, shake his hand, ask him a question, hold his guitar (that would have been incredible at that age!). Exactly what Adam told us. He wanted to get closer to his fans. That is all. He wanted to give some fans something special. He saw how other bands do their VIPs and wanted to do more for the fans than just sit there and hand them an autograph like most bands do. He really is a down to earth guy. Very humble.

I may be wrong but also speculate that Maynard sticks to songs that he knows, hence even effin up opiate at the recent show, between Puscifer and APC, throw in some time signature changes with tool and singing who wouldn’t ? I’m soooo tired of hearing schism, but what I believe is more of a personal connection between the rest of the band and Maynard is why he keeps it. surely they could retire that and intension replace with deposition/reflection to give Maynard a break in using his voice. but again as posted earlier I’m in my 30″s and may… Read more »
